Fanstasic Four director speaks on 'passing the baton' to Russo brothers for Avengers: Doomsday
The Fantastic Four: First Steps director Matt Shakman is ready to "pass the baton" to the Joe and Anthony Russo for Avengers: Doomsday. The 49-year-old filmmaker – who helmed the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie – revealed the directing duo had visited the set of The Fantastic Four: First Steps to get a feel of the titular family for their 2026 blockbuster. Speaking with Deadline, Shakman said of the Russo brothers: "They were very curious about what we were doing - they came to tour our sets, they would watch scenes that we were cutting together. "They wanted to get to know these people as they were working on their story and their script, so that I could pass the baton to them and these characters would be well cared for." The Fantastic Four: First Steps – which stars Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing – follows the titular family as they gain extraordinary powers after a cosmic accident during their exploration of outer space. As they grapple with their new identities, the Fantastic Four must unite to stop the rising threat of Galactus (Ralph Ineson), who is hell-bent on destroying the destroy Earth. While he has "no idea" what Marvel boss Kevin Feige has in store for fans with Avengers: Doomsday, Ineson insisted he would "of course" team up with Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom in the MCU if he was given the chance. He said: "I have no idea what Kevin Feige and everybody have planned, but I worked with Robert a few years ago on Dolittle for a few days, and he's an absolute gentleman and amazing actor, so I loved having the chance to work with him and watch him work. "So, yeah, if I got the chance to team up with him again, of course I would." As well as the Fantastic Four, Avengers: Doomsday will see the return of X-Men stars like Sir Ian McKellen's Magneto, Sir Patrick Stewart's Professor X, James Marsden's Cyclops, Rebecca Romijn's Mystique, Kelsey Grammer's Beast and Alan Cumming's Nightcrawler. Other cast members for the movie include Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Anthony Mackie as Captain America, Sebastian Stan as James 'Bucky' Barnes, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man and Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova. While exact plot details about Avengers: Doomsday are being kept under wraps, the film – which is slated to hit cinemas on December 18, 2026 – will likely see the Avengers, the New Avengers, the X-Men and the Fantastic Four team up to stop Doctor Doom from carrying out his catastrophic plans for the Multiverse. With production on the movie currently underway, Feige revealed Avengers: Doomday's script is being tinkered with on set. He said at a recent press event: " There's plus-ing happening every day on the Avengers: Doomsday set right now, and it is amazing to watch because what those filmmakers, those actors, both the ones that are playing these characters for the first or second time and the one playing them for the 10th or 12th time, are the best in the world at it, and know these characters so well. "So if they have an idea, you want to listen to it and you want to adjust to it and you want to improve it. I wouldn't want to change that."

Kevin Feige Opens Up About 7-Year MCU Plan, Reveals Future of Robert Downey Jr's Dr Doom and Mahershala Ali's Blade
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has confirmed that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has a new seven-year plan in place, extending through 2032. During a press roundtable at Marvel's headquarters in Burbank, California, Feige shared rare insights into what fans can expect from upcoming projects, including the highly anticipated reboot of Fantastic Four, the introduction of Doctor Doom and updates on the delayed Blade movie. 'It's a seven-year plan,' Feige said. 'I think it goes to 2032. It's on magnets, it can move around.' The new roadmap signals that despite recent changes in tone, talent, and storytelling direction, Marvel is still planning long-term. While the exact titles remain under wraps, the studio is prioritizing key character introductions and narrative shifts. Fantastic Four is back under Marvel's control One of the most anticipated projects in the upcoming slate is the Fantastic Four reboot. Unlike previous versions, this new film will be developed entirely under Marvel Studios and Feige's direct leadership. 'Why Fantastic Four? Because it's Marvel's first family,' Feige shared. 'It's in the history of our characters; they deserve to be A-listers.' He also addressed why the team hadn't previously appeared in the Infinity Saga. 'Every crossover movie we've made…the Fantastic Four were huge players in those comics and obviously we couldn't do that then.' Doctor Doom set to take center stage With the Fantastic Four returning, Marvel is also bringing back one of its most iconic villains, Doctor Doom. 'There was only one character that could be that because he was that in the comics for decades…and that's Dr. Doom,' Feige confirmed. Feige noted that discussions around Doctor Doom began even before Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was released, marking a shift away from Kang as the main villain. Feige shared that they had begun discussing Doctor Doom even before officially shifting focus away from Kang. He mentioned that he had started talking with Robert about the bold idea before Ant-Man 3 was even released. Here's what Kevin Feige said about Blade Feige also addressed ongoing delays surrounding Blade, the vampire-hunting superhero film starring Mahershala Ali. While the film was removed from the release calendar, it remains in active development. 'We landed on modern day and that's what we're focusing on,' Feige said, stating that earlier versions included period settings like the 1930s. The delays, according to Feige, were about preserving the quality of the story and ensuring the best version of the film is made. Feige said they didn't want to put Mahershala Ali in a leather outfit and have him start killing vampires. He shared that while it's possible to begin with a good script and improve it during production, the team didn't feel confident they could achieve that with Blade. He added that they didn't want to let down Mahershala or themselves.

Iron Man and Captain America among characters Marvel will recast
Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige has confirmed plans to recast major characters, including the X-Men, Iron Man, and Captain America. This recasting will occur after the release of the 2027 film Avengers: Secret Wars, which Feige stated is about "beginnings" and will set up the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The concept of Secret Wars, involving multiple timelines collapsing, will facilitate this "reset" or "singular timeline," with the forthcoming X-Men solo movie being the first place this will happen. While current X-Men actors will appear in 2026's Avengers: Doomsday, iconic characters like Tony Stark and Steve Rogers are also slated for recasting, similar to how James Bond or Superman roles are re-cast. Separately, Robert Downey Jr is confirmed to return to Marvel as the villain Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, set for release in December 2026.

Did Pedro Pascal just spoil a major Avengers Doomsday death? Fans decode his cryptic Robert Downey Jr comment
Pedro Pascal may have just let slip a major Avengers: Doomsday plot point. The Fantastic Four: First Steps is barely a week away from release, and Pedro, who plays Reed Richards aka Mister Fantastic in the film, teased whether Marvel's first family will even survive what lies ahead in Avengers: Doomsday. The film's still over a year away, but his comment left fans already dreading what could happen to the characters. In a recent promo interview with SensaCine Latinoamérica, Pascal and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm/The Thing) were talking about their upcoming MCU projects. Ebon revealed that he was star struck by Robert Downey Jr, who's returning as a variant of Doctor Doom in Doomsday. 'I was excited to work with Robert Downey Jr. I've loved him for so long,' he said, adding, 'He's one of my favourite actors, he's a brilliant actor. Come at me.' And then, Pascal added the line, 'Too bad you don't have any scenes with him.' Also read: The Fantastic Four First Steps final trailer: Fantastic Four rally together to face their biggest threat yet That remark sent fans into a frenzy. If The Thing doesn't share screen time with Doctor Doom, that could mean two things: Either their characters exist in different timelines or multiverse realities. Or worse, one of them doesn't survive long enough to make it to the final battle. It could also be that their scenes are computer-generated, and don't require them to be on set physically with each other. Either way, it sounded like the Last of Us star may have revealed the major plot point. In another interview promoting First Steps on the BBC, Moss-Bachrach described Doomsday using four words: 'Epic, tragic, intergalactic, starry.' Meanwhile, Joseph Quinn (who plays Johnny Storm aka Human Torch) described it as 'Epic, mental, Downey Jr.' With characters like Tony Stark and Black Widow already gone, fans are expecting more tragic news ahead. Doomsday, with its massive 60-member-plus cast, will pick up directly where The Fantastic Four: First Steps leaves off. Joining the Fantastic Four stars are Anthony Mackie (Captain America), Letitia Wright (Shuri), and Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes). But before they take on Doctor Doom, the team will face Ralph Ineson's Galactus and the Silver Surfer, played by Julia Garner. Meanwhile, a new clip from First Steps shows Sue Storm holding their baby, Franklin Richards, while Reed Richards addresses the press. 'We attempted to negotiate, but Galactus… he asked too high a price,' Reed says. When asked what that was, he adds, 'He asked for our child.' Why would Galactus want their baby? Because Franklin Richards, born to two parents exposed to radiation, is a mutant, one believed to grow up with powers strong enough to create entire universes, bend time, and mess with reality. Stronger than most Avengers combined. Which also explains why a planet-eating cosmic force like Galactus would be after him. Also read: Who is 'world eater' Galactus and the female silver surfer Shalla Bal who feature in the trailer of The Fantastic Four First Steps All signs point to yes. While Ebon may not get to face off against Doctor Doom, Reed Richards definitely will. Earlier, a Marvel producer even revealed that Pascal had to visit RDJ's house for a special Avengers 'homework day.' When asked if Chris Evans (the original Human Torch) would appear in First Steps or Doomsday, Pascal didn't say anything. 'I've just gone into… a blackout.' The Fantastic Four: First Step releases on July 25.

Mr. Fantastic Will Lead The Avengers In ‘Doomsday' – What About Sam And Yelena?
Fantastic Four/Brave New World/Thunderbolts There seems to be a whole lot of confusion about what's going on with the state of the Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though at this point, I can't tell if it's on purpose or not. Now, a new interview has thrown a wrench into things further. Fantastic Four director Matt Shakman is talking about Reed's journey. Per Variety: 'He goes from being the nerdy scientist who's locked away in the lab, to the husband and the father who'd do anything to protect his family, to the guy who's leading the Avengers,' Shakman says. 'I realized that the version we were building had to have all of those elements.' On the one hand, sure, this makes sense. The Fantastic Four will be central to Doomsday given that it's about their main rival, Doctor Doom. On the other, Marvel is giving incredibly mixed messages about what's going on with the Avengers here. First, Captain America: Brave New World ended with Sam Wilson, the new Captain America, being tasked with re-assembling the Avengers. That presumably includes his buddy Falcon, but besides that? Which of the old members are left? Hulk, Mark Ruffalo, is not listed as appearing in Doomsday. Neither is Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye or Benedict Cumberbatch's Dr. Strange. Thor is still there, so is Ant-Man, but past that? Who is he recruiting? Shuri's Black Panther? Shang-Chi? It's a weird scenario. Captain America: Brave New World Then we have the other Avengers, the 'new' Avengers, which were assembled as the Thunderbolts changed their name at the end of their film (which ended up, stupidly, being used a spoiler marketing campaign). There's a joke in the film about Sam copyrighting 'The Avengers,' but it's clear there's some conflict between the two groups. This one includes, Yelena, Bucky, Red Guardian, Ghost and Bob/Sentry, if he ever decides to be Sentry/Void again. Now we have this third idea of an Avengers group led by a guy who's not even in the right MCU dimension yet, Mr. Fantastic. Who is he leading besides his own team? Is a conflict between these presumably three Avengers groups part of the Doomsday story? Because it's not like there's another film that will resolve it before then. I suppose the idea is that all of these people will combine into being the new Avengers, but I'm not sure why they're doing all this strange separation and declarations beforehand. Fantastic Four Doomsday is a huge moment for the MCU as it attempts to recapture its glory days, but heavily relying on new characters, or ones with new mantles, or for some reason, half of FOX's X-Men who debuted 25 years ago. We'll see what that's about. Oh, and Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr., is playing Doctor Doom in a baffling mystery decision. This is all going to be something, that's for sure.
