‘Thalliki Vandanam' scheme will be implemented from this academic year, says Social Welfare Minister

Social Welfare Minister Dola Sri Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy, who is also the in-charge Minister for the Visakhapatnam district, has said that the benefits of the much-awaited 'Thalliki Vandanam' scheme will be distributed to the beneficiaries within a week. He took part in the 'Shining Stars' awards' presentation ceremony at the B.R. Ambedkar Assembly hall on the Andhra University campus here on Monday. The State government has announced the awards to the toppers in the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Intermediate annual examinations for the year 2024-25. A total of 121 students, including 83 SSC toppers and 38 Intermediate toppers (six students from each mandal) from across the district, were presented with the awards by the guests. Each winner was presented a cash prize of ₹20,000 in the form of a cheque. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Swamy said that the State government will launch the 'Thalliki Vandanam' scheme this academic year and the amount will be transferred directly to the beneficiaries' accounts within a week. So, students and parents need not worry about it. He said that from this academic year, welfare students of Gurukul schools will be given coaching on IIT and NEET. He urged students to participate in the International Yoga Day celebrations to be held in the city on June 21, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the chief guest. District Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad has said that Visakhapatnam students will always be at the top in education and other aspects. He has urged students to stay away from cellphones and IPL cricket matches during their student life for a better career. Visakhapatnam MP M. Sribharat, Government Whip P.G.V.R. Naidu (Ganababu) and others participated. The awardees and their parents expressed happiness on the initiative taken by the government to encourage students.

VISAKHAPATNAM: Visakhapatnam district is preparing to host International Yoga Day on June 21 with extensive arrangements planned to accommodate over 2.5 lakh participants. The event, set to take place along a 26.5-kilometre coastal stretch from RK Beach's Kali Mata Temple to Bheemunipatnam, is being organised with the aim of setting a record for mass yoga participation. On Saturday, District In-Charge Minister Dola Sri Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy and Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha chaired a coordination committee meeting at the Collectorate to review preparations. Speaking on the occasion, Visakhapatnam District Collector MN Harendhira Prasad outlined the logistics of the event, which will include 127 designated compartments, each accommodating 1,000 people. The compartments, measuring 200x14 metres, will be equipped with basic facilities such as water, medical support, and volunteers. The main stage, where key dignitaries including the Prime Minister, Union Ministers, the Chief Minister, and the Governor are expected to participate, will be located between the Kali Mata Temple and YMCA. Additional small stages with sound systems and LED screens will be set up along the route to ensure smooth conduct of the session.

Welfare Minister calls for making Prakasam anaemia-free district

Ongole: Social Welfare Minister Dr Dola Sri Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy and collector A Thameem Ansariya urged everyone to work towards making Prakasam district free from anaemia. The minister and the collector participated in the closing ceremony of the Nutrition Fortnight (Poshan Pakhwada) celebrations organised by the Women Development and Child Welfare Department in Ongole on Tuesday. As part of the celebrations, a rally was conducted from the Collectorate to the Mini Stadium. Mayor Gangada Sujata, Joint Collector R Gopala Krishna, ICDS Project Director Hena Sujan, District Medical and Health Officer Dr Venkateswara Rao, along with officials from DRDA and MEPMA, ASHA workers, students, and others also participated. Joint collector Gopal Krishna administered an oath to the participants. Speaking at the event, Minister Dr Swamy emphasised that childhood is precious, and the government's primary goal is to ensure every child lives a healthy life. He stressed the need to reduce infant and maternal mortality rates in the district and highlighted the concerning prevalence of child marriages in Prakasam district that must be prevented. The minister explained that the Nutrition Fortnight, observed from the April 8th to the 22nd, focused on different themes each day. He emphasised that the first 1,000 days of a child's life after birth are crucial, requiring proper nutrition, mental development training, and efforts to eliminate anaemia among pregnant women, new mothers, and adolescent girls. He called for strong coordination between ICDS, the Medical Health Department, and the Education Department. The minister praised the establishment of a District Child Resource Centre and a lactation room for mothers with infants at the Collectorate. Collector Thameem Ansariya detailed the various activities conducted during the 15-day programme, including awareness sessions on breastfeeding, village-level health and sanitation nutrition days, and counselling for proper care during the first 1,000 days from conception to age two. She confirmed that efforts are ongoing to make Prakasam an anaemia-free district with everyone's cooperation. Following the speeches, the minister, collector, and other officials inaugurated the breastfeeding room for nursing mothers at the Collectorate. The minister also visited the District Child Resource Centre and inspected a photo exhibition arranged for the occasion.
