Outside Lands headliner releases surprise album weeks before festival
Outside Lands attendees may be some of the first to hear Tyler, the Creator 's newest album live. The Southern California rapper released his 10-track 'Don't Tap the Glass' on Monday, July 21, just weeks before he is set to headline the San Francisco festival at Golden Gate Park on Aug. 9, the second night of the three-day event. Clocking in at just under 30 minutes, the project marks Tyler, the Creator's ninth studio album. It features Pharrell Williams on opening track 'Big Poe,' and includes samples of Oakland rapper Too Short 's 'Dope Fiend Beat,' Busta Rhymes ' 'Pass the Courvoisier Part II' and Michael Jackson 's 'Off the Wall.' 'This album was not made for sitting still,' the 'Sticky' rapper posted to Instagram on Monday morning. 'Dancing driving running any type of movement is recommended to maybe understand the spirit of it.' Following the album's release, Tyler, the Creator dropped a music video for the track 'Stop Playing With Me,' which featured cameos by Los Angeles Lakers power forward LeBron James, his business associate Maverick Carter and Clipse, the hip-hop duo composed of rapper Pusha T and his brother Malice. Tyler, the Creator — born Tyler Gregory Okonma — began teasing a Monday announcement on social media last week. While many fans were unsure of what the surprise could be, he updated his streetwear brand Golf Wang 's website on Friday, July 18, to include vinyls, T-shirts and other 'Don't Tap the Glass' merchandise. He also mentioned the title of the album onstage during a concert in Brooklyn that night. His headlining slot at the festival, which runs Aug. 8-10, comes in the middle of his 'Chromakopia' tour, which stopped in Oakland on Feb. 24 and San Francisco on March 5. Though he's been performing tracks off that record, fans are hopeful the rapper will debut some of his newer tracks during his upcoming shows. Tyler, the Creator was initially scheduled to perform at Outside Lands last year, but dropped out at the last minute and was replaced by 'Espresso' singer Sabrina Carpenter.

"I thought, 'Damn, a natural form of expression and a certain connection they have with music is now a ghost.' It made me wonder how much of our human spirit got killed because of the fear of being a meme. All for having a good time." Taking a one-night break from "Chromakopia: The World Tour," which continues through September, Tyler, The Creator held a listening party for the new album in Los Angeles on Sunday evening. In his Instagram post, the artist said during an evening with no phones, no camera, "just speakers and sweatbox," friends and fans were simply able to enjoy themselves. "I've never smiled more than I have today," the top comment on the artist's Instagram post teasing the music video read, as of July 21. TikTok user Tyson Jones pointed out that "Don't Tap the Glass" has a much different sound than the artist's previous album, "Chromakopia." The albums also vary in length, as "Don't Tap the Glass" runs front to back in less than 30 minutes and "Chromakopia" runs more than 50 minutes. Jones said the new album may be different than what Tyler, The Creator fans are used to, or were hoping of the artist's new album, but the dance-centric album is a fun listen. "You can just tell, Tyler, The Creator was having a lot of fun making this and just wanted to drop it for his fans," Jones said in a video. Brielle Ki, an editorial intern for advertising agency Hypebeast, described the new album as a raw, creative implusive from Tyler, The Creator, following a more structured "Chromakopia." "Across all ten songs, "Don't Tap the Glass" resists definition. It doesn't aim to be cohesive or complete," Ki wrote in a Hypebeast blog post. "This album strays from genre while still feeling entirely like him – less a statement, more a glimpse into the raw mechanics of his creative process. The rapper directly announced the album title to the audience, creating immediate excitement. Further solidifying the announcement, an installation designed to recreate the album's cover, prominently featuring its title, was also displayed. The news was then officially confirmed by Tyler himself via an Instagram post on Saturday morning, which included the release date for Tyler the Creator's new album. 'Don't Tap the Glass' will be Tyler's ninth studio album. Its release comes less than a year after his previous project, Chromakopia , which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in October 2024. Elsewhere in the interview, the rapper also discusses his frustration with finding places to seriously discuss his work. 'We need to get back to talking about music,' Tyler said. 'We need to stop f***ing going sneaker shopping or f***ing deepthroating hot wings for an hour. Talk about your album, talk about music.' Beyond his prolific and critically acclaimed music career, Tyler is also making significant strides in the film industry. Earlier this year, he completed filming on Josh Safdie's highly anticipated movie, 'Marty Supreme,' according to The Hollywood Reporter.
