John F Kennedy's historic Wexford visit is marked by vintage car run in New Ross
Gathering opposite the Dunbrody Famine Ship, the JFK Car Meet and Run left the town and headed for the JFK Arboretum, crossing the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Bridge, and upon its return to the quay, passed the JFK statue. The lead car on the run was the distinctive and iconic red Ford Mustang with its V8 engine, probably the best known car to feature in any film for the remarkable Steve McQueen street chase through San Francisco in the 1968 classic film, Bullitt. The New Ross event attracted over 70 cars of all makes from the 1950's to the more modern cars of the 2000's, despite being a late event added to a crowded calendar and clashing with a well established show in south Dublin, and also up against the national favourite, the Donegal Rally, which is a must for all car enthusiasts. However, the organisers of the event said they were grateful for the support they received for the New Ross event in their efforts to attract people to the town and enjoy what it has to offer, especially on a summer's day like so. Throughout the day, people also wandered the streets as their curiosity led them to seek out the newly renovated Brennan's Lane, The High Hill Garden, the many murals around the streets, and some families strolled from the car meet down along the banks of the River Barrow past the award-winning Emigrant Park and joined in with the Family Fun Day in Pearse Park held by Wexford Sports Active, which was also a hive of activity on the day. Meanwhile, visitors of the Dunbrody Famine Ship and The Ros Tapestry afterwards made their way towards the car meet. John Dimond, of Wexford Sports and Classic Car Club commented on the event and said: 'The support from the visitors was great to see, but more events are needed to attract tourists and locals and on the back of this, the club will look at running similar events in the future.' The Wexford Sports and Classic Car Club has thanked those who sponsored prizes and the Dunbrody Centre for providing their facilities, with the 'most appreciated part of the day the Butchers Best sponsored BBQ burger to finish off the days events.' It's expected the JFK Car Meet and Run will made a donation from the funds raised to the New Ross Meals on Wheels in the near future. The Meals on Wheels is currently preparing for it's golf competition on July 21 and the organisation is appealing for sponsorship of tees and greens at €100 for each. The Meals on Wheels provides over 20,000 meals delivered to the homes of vulnerable people throughout the year and the delivery of the meals allows many of the recipients to remain in independent living in their homes. By supporting the golf competition, it will contribute hugely to the continuation of the service. Enquiries regarding the Meals on Wheels can be made at the Sr. Aidan Centre, Cross Street or by contacting 051 445711 between 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Monday to Friday.

Monaghan gardaí crack down on illegal tints and road offences as motorists fined en route to Donegal International Rally
Officers attached to the county's Roads Policing Unit stopped and examined a string of vehicles which were en route to the three day annual car race. A large number of those that were pulled in included vehicles with excessive window tinting. Follow Independent Monaghan on Facebook 'Monaghan Roads Policing Unit were conducting checkpoints monitoring the large volumes of traffic heading for the Donegal Rally,' said a garda spokesperson. 'A number of vehicles were stopped with illegal tints. 'Effects of illegal tints reduce visibility, especially at night or in low light conditions and can hinder a driver's ability to see other road users and pedestrians, increasing the risk of collisions.' One of those to fall under the scrutiny of gardaí was also found to have no NCT, resulting in its seizure. Gardaí released an image of a black Lexus which had no NCT in a detection that will see its driver being hit with a fine and penalty points. 'Other offences for speeding and non-display of N plates were also detected,' added the spokesperson. 'Fixed charge penalty notices will be issued to the drivers.'

The Louth Senior football team got lost on their way up to Donegal over the weekend ahead of their preliminary clash with The Forgotten County. Ger Brennan's side faced the Ulster champions in the last 16 stages in Ballybofey on Sunday afternoon, arriving just 45 minutes before kick-off after a wrong turn sent them to Sligo. The error meant the journey took the team two hours and 20 minutes. Pic: ©INPHO/Lorcan Doherty While questions arose as to why the team didn't source accommodation closer to Ballybofey, one reason could be due to the Donegal Rally which took place over the weekend, likely resulting in accommodation being scarce. One person on social media noted: 'No accommodation in Donegal available because of the rally, closest to Ballybofey that could accommodate all the Louth party was Enniskillen.' Unfortunately, for the Louth side their day went from bad to worse after they failed to triumph over Donegal with Jim McGuinness' side winning 2-22 to 0-12 when the final klaxon sounded. Devine wins third Donegal International Rally in a row
Callum Devine came through a demanding Donegal International Rally to win the event for a third year in a row. The 2023 Irish Tarmac Rally champion won the three-day event - one of the most famous rallies in Europe - alongside co-driver Noel O'Sullivan by 20.5 seconds ahead of Wales' Meirion Evans, while local driver David Kelly was third. Skoda driver Devine, 31, led after Friday's six stages but a gruelling Saturday saw a number of big names drop out of contention. European Rally Championship driver Jon Armstrong posted a number of fastest stage times and was challenging Devine on Saturday's first loop but a differential problem on his Ford Fiesta dropped him out of contention, and a second mechanical issue halted his recovery later in the day. Two time ERC champion Hayden Paddon, a late entry for the rally from New Zealand, was in the mix for victory but rolled out on Saturday's penultimate stage. The final stage on Saturday claimed British Rally Championship title challenger William Creighton, who slid off the road with a slow puncture and decided to retire his Toyota Yaris. The various issues for front runners took away from what could have been a titanic battle for the win in the Donegal hills as just 20 seconds separated Devine, Creighton, Evans and Paddon after 12 as his rivals faltered, Devine, who himself battled handbrake issues, kept his cool to win the rally for the third consecutive and co-driver Ger Conway were a comfortable second and, despite his issues, Armstrong and co-driver Shane Byrne had moved back into podium contention but the Fermanagh driver retired after an off on the final promoted Kelly and navigator Arthur Kierans onto the final step of the podium for the second year in a row.
