NY Jets insider says Donovan Edwards was 'biggest winner' in team's rookie minicamp

NY Jets insider says Donovan Edwards was 'biggest winner' in team's rookie minicamp It was a shocking drop, from being on the cover of the new and rebranded EA Sports College Football 25 to not being drafted. But former Michigan football running back Donovan Edwards is making the most of his opportunity. Edwards may have gone undrafted, but he did get picked up by the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent. The Jets have something of a bottleneck at running back with Braelon Allen, Breece Hall, and Zach Evans all competing for the role, but according to Jets X Factor writer Nick Faria, Edwards shined in rookie minicamp, looking like the best of the Jets' undrafted players that they signed. If Smith was the biggest winner of the 2025 draft class, then Michigan running back Donovan Edwards was the biggest winner of the undrafted group in attendance this week for the Jets. Edwards doesn't have blazing speed, but he showed patience and good maneuverability to find gaping holes during 11-on-11 work. He is bottlenecked by his position at this point, but Edwards is going to make things very interesting moving forward in the running back room. The Jets are rebuilding and revamping under new head coach Aaron Glenn, who comes from the Detroit Lions, having been the defensive coordinator under Dan Campbell. Edwards was the biggest name of the undrafted free agents signed by the New York franchise, along with former Missouri quarterback Brady Cook -- both of whom beat Ohio State in the 2023 season (Cook beat OSU in the bowl game). Edwards' offensive backfield compatriot, Kalel Mullings, was drafted by the Tennessee Titans on the third day of the draft, and has subsequently signed.

CBS Sports puts Michigan RB Donovan Edwards atop 'all-undrafted team'

While it may have been fodder for rival fans that Michigan football running back Donovan Edwards didn't get drafted this past weekend into the NFL, many of those same fans have players who were thought to be surefire draft picks who found themselves in the same boat. That led to an idea for CBS Sports' Shehan Jeyarajah -- what would an all-undrafted team look like? Advertisement Naturally, Jeyarajah had Edwards -- who graced the cover of EA Sports College Football 25 after a solid performance in the previous year's national championship game -- as one of his two running backs and the star of the show (the article is titled '2025 All-Undrafted Team: Michigan's Donovan Edwards, All-American LBs headline high-profile NFL Draft snubs'). Here's what he had to say about the former Wolverine: RB: Donovan Edwards (Michigan) Edwards was one the cover of "College Football 25" for a reason after breaking off a College Football Playoff championship-winning run for Michigan against Washington. Seemingly healthy heading into 2024, he instead mustered only 589 yards for one of the worst offenses in the country. There were plenty of other college football stars who didn't hear their names called who ended up on the list: Texas wide receiver Isaiah Bond, Ohio State center Seth McLaughlin, Kansas cornerback Cobee Bryant, and Oregon cornerback Jabbar Muhammad, among others. Edwards will still have his chance as he signed as an undrafted free agent with the New York Jets. Michigan RB Donovan Edwards signs with New York Jets as an undrafted free agent

Michigan RB Donovan Edwards signs with New York Jets as an undrafted free agent Some of the most iconic moments in recent Michigan football history have come courtesy of none other than Donovan Edwards. A local product who hailed from West Bloomfield (Mich.), Edwards was a five-star according to one recruiting service and a four-star to the others. His big moments include a huge game against Penn State in 2022, a 75-yard and 85-yard touchdown against Ohio State that same year, and two 40-plus-yard scampers for touchdowns in the 2023 national championship game against Washington. Edwards was a big enough player in the sport to be included on the covers of the resurgent EA Sports College Football 25 video game, but alas, after a two-year struggle to cement himself as a dominant running back consistently, he went undrafted. However, Edwards signed as an undrafted free agent with the New York Jets, per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. Edwards amassed 2,251 rushing yards in his four years as a Wolverine and could have been utilized as a receiver. However, the maize and blue rarely used him in that position, despite him having his best year catching the football as a true freshman. This past season, Edwards was a team captain, but he ended up splitting time with Kalel Mullings in the backfield.

Detroit HSSA where are they now? Donovan Edwards preparing for Senior Bowl

Donovan Edwards made news this week after talking about his Michigan team's success against Ohio State in his four seasons with the Wolverines. Normally, that might seem like a weird flex as yes, Michigan beat Ohio State this year, but the Buckeyes then won four straight games to win the national title. But Edwards, the 2021 Detroit High School Sports Awards Offensive Football Player of the Year who is preparing to play in Saturday's Senior Bowl in the hopes of putting an exclamation point on his stellar college career, has some cover in bragging about his four straight wins over Ohio State. The Wolverines, after all, themselves won the national title in 2024. And while Edwards draft prospects are bright, a Senior Bowl boost would be welcomed. In fact, by far his best season was in 2022 as a sophomore when he rushed 991 yards on 140 carries, a robust 7.1 yards per carry. A good receiver out of the backfield, he added 18 catches for 83 yards this year after having 30 for 249 yards last year. And he's considered a good blocker. A big game Saturday could help boost the stock of the former West Bloomfield High School star, making him a player to watch. The 2024-25 Detroit High School Sports Awards are June 16 at The Fillmore Detroit. The show is produced with the support of Gift of Life Michigan. Tickets are available here.
