Wilkinsburg community on the lookout for group of men targeting young women

There's a new warning out in Wilkinsburg. The borough's mayor says police are on the lookout regarding information about concerning acts by young men. Wilkinsburg's mayor, Dontae Comans, says there's some concerning behavior going on. The mayor says law enforcement has shared information about young men targeting women. "You think people have more sense to do something better for themselves rather than going around tormenting other people," one member of the community told KDKA-TV. Law enforcement says the young men are shooting at them using stun guns, air pistols, and BB guns. The mayor says Wilkinsburg police officers are increasing patrols in response. People we spoke with expressed worry, but there's also a sense of optimism. "You gotta pray that these people have some morals and values, and that they shouldn't be shooting at anybody," another member of the community told KDKA-TV. Comans says people should always be aware of their surroundings. He said in a Facebook post that they should walk in pairs or groups if you can, especially during the evening or where there are not many people around. Comans also said, "If you see something, say something."

Wilkinsburg Mayor says young men are shooting women with stun, pellet, BB guns

A local mayor is warning women in his community to be on the lookout. Wilkinsburg Mayor Dontae Comans posted to his Facebook page saying 'Our law enforcement partners have shared concerning intel regarding young males targeting women by shooting at them with stun guns, air pistols, and BB guns. These senseless acts are not only dangerous, but they also threaten the safety and peace of our community.' 'I see people on Facebook and stuff talking about it,' Wilkinsburg resident Jaraya Lane said. 'I heard about it before. It happens like every year around this time.' It's never happened to her, but Jaraya says she knows people who have been hit. 'They just think it's fun but people don't be thinking it's fun.' Mayor Comans called the trend 'reckless' and said officers would be increasing patrols. 'That's definitely the right move to make. They need to,' Wilkinsburg resident Tracy Johnson said. Neighbors told Channel 11 it's not just posing a danger to the women being targeted, but to the young men doing it. 'Somebody might pull out a real gun and shoot them,' Johnson. Both women shared a message. 'Don't do it. Simply, find a different hobby or go paintballing somewhere. They've got different places they can play at,' Lane said. 'They need to stop before they get hurt or go to jail,' Johnson said. Citing law enforcement partners, the mayor's post included safety tips like walking in pairs. He's also asking anyone with information to police or 911. Download the FREE WPXI News app for breaking news alerts. Follow Channel 11 News on Facebook and Twitter. | Watch WPXI NOW

Young males "targeting" women in Pittsburgh-area community with stun guns and BB guns, mayor says

Young males are "targeting" women in Wilkinsburg with stun guns, air pistols and BB guns, the borough's mayor said on Thursday. In a post on Facebook, Wilkinsburg Mayor Dontae Comans said law enforcement shared "concerning intel" about males shooting women with stun guns, air pistols and BB guns. The mayor's post, titled "Public Safety Alert," did not say if there were any injuries or arrests. It also did not release any more information about the incidents. "These senseless acts are not only dangerous, but they also threaten the safety and peace of our community," the mayor said in the Facebook post. Comans is reminding people in the borough to be aware of their surroundings and walk in groups during the evening. Comans said police in Wilkinsburg will be increasing patrols to ensure public safety and "deter this reckless behavior." The mayor added that if anyone has information about this, call 911 or their local police department. "See Something, Say Something: Your voice could protect someone else," Comans posted on Facebook. "We are committed to protecting our residents especially our women, and holding those responsible accountable," Comans added. "Let's continue looking out for one another. Safety is a shared responsibility."

Pittsburgh-area community leaders receive reports about 2 immigration raids

Jaime Martinez, the community defense organizer with Casa San Jose, said the non-profit organization's hotline received multiple reports on Wednesday about Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity in the eastern part of the city. "We heard of five different detentions yesterday alone," said Martinez of Casa San Jose, which serves immigrant communities. One of the detentions happened in Wilkinsburg. Video shows a Hispanic man in handcuffs being walked by FBI agents into a van. KDKA has learned those agents were assisting the Department of Homeland Security with immigration enforcement. Wilkinsburg Mayor Dontae Comans posted about it on his Facebook page on Wednesday. "Everyone here, we're family," Comans said on Thursday. "We're Wilkinsburg, and we just want to protect each other. We have ordinances that protect everyone, no matter what part of life you're from." KDKA's Mamie Bah asked, "What do you say to people who say you shouldn't be here illegally?" "That's how this country started." Mayor Comans said. "It's all about getting that path to being a resident, and I feel like we need to help them." Comans shared photos with KDKA of federal agents in Braddock. The borough's mayor was caught off guard by the presence of agents. "I'm just unaware that they were in our neighborhoods, in our boroughs," said Mayor Delia Lennon-Winstead. "Would you cooperate with ICE agents if they reached out to you all?" Bah asked. "Being an elected official and under the seat of the mayor, I would do my best to help and cooperate," Mayor Lennon-Winstead said. In a statement to KDKA, a spokesperson for the FBI wrote, in part, "The FBI in Pittsburgh continues to provide investigative, technical, and analytical support to our partners at the Department of Homeland Security in their immigration operations all over the region as directed by the attorney general." Martinez's wish is that people in the community look out for one another. "Our community is under attack," Martinez said. "Be a good neighbor, that means being on the lookout for where ICE is, calling our hotline." Casa San Jose's emergency response line is 412-736-7167.
