Dorian Thompson-Robinson aiming far beyond the Eagles practice squad

We all thought we had it figured out, but this is one of the reasons why we love the Philadelphia Eagles and team sports. The unpredictable nature of both is why we keep tuning in. Some things we know. Jerry Jones will self-sabotage. The New York Giants are a mess. The Cleveland Browns can't do anything with any competency. But that brings us back to the Birds. What an offseason, huh? The quarterback position was the lone area where we thought we had an understanding. The plan seemed crystal clear, or so we thought. This is Jalen Hurts' team, and Tanner McKee is his backup. That part we got right, but we've been thrown a curveball while studying the back-half of the depth chart. Dorian Thompson-Robinson is already looking past the Eagles' practice squad for a spot on the 53-man roster. Dorian Thompson-Robinson was traded to the Eagles from the Browns on March 12, 2025. Cleveland landed Kenny Pickett. Philadelphia also earned a 2025 fifth-round draft pick in the 2025 NFL Draft out of the deal. Then came the NFL Draft. The Eagles drafted another quarterback, Kyle McCord. It was at that point that we thought Thompson-Robinson's fate was sealed. He seemed destined for, at best, a practice squad role, but as the great Lee Corso would say, 'Not so fast, friends.' It's Thompson-Robinson, who has taken control of the race. He has taken third-team snaps in practice. He enjoyed a more impressive showing during the first preseason game. He seems to be running away with the job of emergency quarterback. Kyle McCord seems headed in the other direction. Thompson-Robinson spoke with the Philadelphia media members after the 11th practice of camp, one that precedes the open session at Lincoln Financial Field. 'I feel like I'm settling in well, scheme, teammates, coaches, being around the building, getting to know the city, I feel like I've adjusted well. The Eagles are such a great organization. It's a lot easier, instead of going the opposite way (to a losing team). I feel like everyone has uplifted me, and helped me along, tried to get me up to speed as fast as possible.' Yeah, that doesn't sound like a guy who intends on going anywhere and doing so quietly. Frankly, there are seemingly only two ways that McCord can make up ground. Thompson-Robinson can implode while McCord seemingly does an immediate about-face, or Philadelphia can be stubborn and hold onto McCord simply because they used draft capital to acquire him. NFL preseason scores, live updates: Ashton Jeanty in action, Anthony Richardson injured in Week 1

Follow along live for updates and insight as the NFL preseason schedule begins Imagn Images Getty Images Q3 7:41 - Eagles 27, Bengals 14 Tanner McKee's night is over, finishing 20-for-25 passing for 252 yards, two passing touchdowns and a rushing score. Dorian Thompson-Robinson is now in at quarterback for the Eagles. Q4 15:00 - Ravens 21, Colts 16 The fourth quarter has arrived in Baltimore. Devin Leary remains at quarterback for Baltimore. Q3 9:24 - Eagles 27, Bengals 14 Tanner McKee leads another strong drive for the Eagles but this time, it does not end with a touchdown. On third-and-goal, he sails a pass just wide of Ainias Smith in the end zone. Jake Elliott trots on and converts a a 23-yard field goal. Getty Images Q3 4:28 - Ravens 21, Colts 16 The Ravens have turned to rookie sixth-round draft pick Tyler Loop as their kicker. He misses a 46-yard field goal that had the distance but is pulled left. After so many years with Justin Tucker as their kicker, the Ravens will need Loop to be steady. Imagn Images Q3 15:00 - Eagles 24, Bengals 14 The second half is underway in Phildelphia. The Eagles have the ball and Tanner McKee is still in at quarterback. Q3 7:13 - Ravens 21, Colts 16 The Colts are finally in the end zone with an impressive drive, covering seven plays and 54 yards. Khalil Herbert caps the drive with a 1-yard run. Rookie QB Riley Leonard was effective through that possession too, running and throwing the ball. Halftime - Eagles 24, Bengals 14 Philadelphia has found the end zone AGAIN before the half... Tanner McKee drops a 20-yard dime to Darius Cooper for his second passing touchdown of the half. The Eagles' backup quarterback finishes the half 14-for-17 passing for 193 yards and two passing scores. This touchdown was set up by a 46-yard punt return from Ainias Smith. The Bengals have not scored since Burrow and the first-team offense left the game. The Eagles will begin the second half with the ball. Colts head coach Shane Steichen says that QB Anthony Richardson's injury was a dislocation of the pinky on his right (throwing) hand, adding: 💬 'Don't know how long he'll be out.' Q2 1:33 - Eagles 17, Bengals 14 Another strong drive from Tanner McKee, capping it off with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Ainias Smith, who broke free on an in-breaking route. The Eagles' backup quarterback is now 12-for-15 passing for 164 yards with a touchdown through the air and a touchdown on the ground. Getty Images Q3 15:00 - Ravens 21, Colts 9 The second-half kickoff is here. The Colts will have the ball first. Riley Leonard is in at quarterback. Q2 4:19 - Bengals 14, Eagles 10 Jake Browning is 5-for-7 passing for 59 yards, but the Bengals' offense does not have much to show for it. After his pass intended for Charlie Jones is broken up, Cincinnati is forced to punt again. McKee will get another shot here for the Eagles. Getty Images Half - Ravens 21, Colts 9 The Colts have outgained the Ravens 174-127, but Baltimore's special teams have been ... special. A long punt return for a touchdown by LaJohntay Wester and a long kickoff return by Rasheen Ali set up Ali's own short TD run. It's hard to overcome those kinds of special teams plays. Colts backup quarterback Daniel Jones has looked good after replacing Anthony Richardson following an early injury. Jones has completed 8-of-17 passes for 115 yards. Q2 0:15 - Ravens 21, Colts 9 Spencer Shrader is now 3-for-4 on field goals, hitting the goal post on a 52-yard try. Q2 7:17 - Bengals 14, Eagles 10 McKee is still in at quarterback for the Eagles. The drive begins with a 28-yard completion to Johnny Wilson but quickly stalls out. A few plays later, Philadelphia punts and Cincinnati takes over at its 10-yard line. Q2 1:26 - Ravens 21, Colts 6 Rasheen Ali started the drive for Baltimore with a long kickoff return to the Colts' 24-yard line. He added a 22-yard run and then capped the drive with a 2-yard TD run. That's big stuff for Ali. Q2 10:18 - Bengals 14, Eagles 10 After a few first downs by the Bengals' second-team offense, the Eagles get a stop. On third-and-17, Jake Browning fires across the middle to Isaiah Williams, but the ball bounces off his hands, floats up in the air and is nearly intercepted. Cincinnati punts. Imagn Images Q2 2:14 - Ravens 14, Colts 9 The Colts score their first touchdown of the preseason, but it's called back because of an offensive pass interference. Daniel Jones completes the pass to the short right to Ashton Dulin for the score, but it won't count. Spencer Shrader then makes a 39-yard field goal, his third of the game. Q2 14:48 - Bengals 14, Eagles 10 McKee attempts to find Grant Calcaterra along the sideline on third-and-5 but the tight end cannot make the grab. As a result, the Eagles settle for a 44-yard field goal attempt from Elliott, which he converts. Page 2

New Eagles QB is already on thin ice (and training camp hasn't arrived yet)

We may never again see another NFL team hand another more talented quarterback prospect than the Cleveland Browns have given to the Philadelphia Eagles. The Brownies drafted Tim Couch first overall in 1999. The Birds took Donovan McNabb one pick later. The rest, as they say, is history. Then, there was the trade in 2016. Cleveland dealt the second-overall pick to Philadelphia, and with it, the Eagles acquired Carson Wentz. Say what you will about Carson. He set the table for the Birds' first Super Bowl win. Advertisement The Dorian Thompson-Robinson/Kenny Pickett trade wasn't as impactful as landing Donovan or Carson, but it still feels like Philadelphia won out. After all, they earned a fifth-round selection out of the deal. What's strange is that Kenny may make the Browns' roster, and the ceiling for Thompson-Robinson may be a practice squad job, because both are skating on thin ice thanks to a couple of late-round rookies. Kyle McCord's presence on the Eagles roster could spell doom for Dorian Thompson-Robinson. Nothing lasts forever in the NFL, but Pickett and Thompson-Robinson have to be telling themselves that one season would be nice. The former is suffering from 'Shedeur Sanders envy'. The latter seemingly lost his job to Kyle McCord before either played a snap. Advertisement McCord hasn't technically won the job yet, but then again, Philadelphia invested draft capital. That says a lot, and when the rookie stepped on the field to take some reps as the third quarterback, he certainly made the most of his opportunity. It's only June. Training camp hasn't started yet, so there's a long way to go. There are, however, a couple of growing theories, and they might be accurate. Somehow, it feels like we've already seen Thompson-Robinson's ceiling, and McCord might have more natural talent. It seems unlikely that either will play this season in a game that matters, but that isn't the point. Advertisement This is Philadelphia, and a battle for the third quarterback job is just as interesting as any other. Keep an eye on this one as we move through the summer, but if anyone is taking wagers, it's wise to place one on Kyle McCord.
