RFK Jr. touts vitamin A and cod liver oil for measles. Here's what the science says.

Here are four recent statements Kennedy made about measles and what infectious disease experts had to say about his handling of the crisis so far. 'The decision to vaccinate is a personal one.' In an opinion piece published by Dr. Shira Doron, chief infection control officer for Tufts Medicine, said it was problematic for the country's top public health official to not more aggressively endorse vaccination amid the current outbreak. Advertisement 'Some vaccines could be a personal choice. For example, even the CDC leaves some leeway on certain vaccines,' said Doron, including one for Measles, best known for the signature red rash it causes, infects 9 out of every 10 unvaccinated people exposed to it. But it is also highly preventable. Two doses of the MMR vaccine — the first typically given when children are between the ages of 12 and 15 months and the second given between the ages of 4 and 6 years old— are 97 percent effective at preventing infection and provide lifelong immunity for most people. Advertisement Herd immunity for measles requires a 95 percent vaccination rate, yet in the Texas county where measles has been spreading, 'Studies have found that vitamin A can dramatically reduce measles mortality.' While it's true that the World Health Organization 'We've never done a trial in the U.S., so I can't tell you for certain whether it's beneficial or it's not,' said Dr. Alfred Sommer, a professor of epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and a contributor to a 2020 report by the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases that The American Academy of Pediatrics notes that 'many US experts concur with administering vitamin A to all children in the United States with measles, regardless of hospitalization status' and adds that However, vitamin A, unlike vaccination, cannot prevent measles. It's also important for parents to consult doctors before giving children vitamin A, because it's possible to overdose. In a recent Fox News interview, Kennedy also claimed that children with measles in Texas were being given cod liver oil, which is naturally high in vitamin A. Advertisement Doron expressed confusion over Kennedy's claims. 'You would not administer vitamin A that way,' she said. 'It doesn't have even close to what you would give if you were administering medical-grade vitamin A.' Vitamin A — along with vitamin supplementation in general — has long been promoted by anti-vaccine activists as an alternative to vaccination for disease prevention, including by the anti-vaccine organization Children's Health Defense, which Kennedy 'If you are healthy it's almost impossible for you to be killed by an infectious disease in modern times.' Kennedy made this claim in an 'Of course, a balanced diet is very important for health, but a nutrition rich diet alone will not stop the most contagious disease in the world from infecting an unvaccinated child,' said Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota last week on his Doron echoed his comments. 'People should absolutely pay attention to their underlying health, including exercise, a healthy diet, stress management, smoking cessation, and optimizing chronic diseases like diabetes with medications,' she said. 'Doing so will boost the immune system and reduce the risk of complications. However, even healthy people contract infectious diseases, have complications, and die.' 'By 1960 — before the vaccine's introduction — improvements in sanitation and nutrition had Doron criticized Kennedy's historical framing of measles mortality. 'It's not percentages that we should care about, it's absolute numbers,' she said. 'We were seeing 400 to 500 deaths a year [prior to the introduction of vaccination], on top of that permanent disability in children due to measles.' Long-term effects of measles can include deafness, lung scarring, and sometimes fatal brain damage, Doron added. Advertisement 'MMR vaccines and other vaccines are safe,' said Dr. Vandana Madhavan, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at Mass General for Children. 'Unfortunately, that does not get the same amount of media attention as anti-vaccine misinformation, which has led to a greater rate of vaccine hesitancy,' 'If vaccine skepticism continues to spread, we're going to see more outbreaks of diseases that had become rare in the U.S.,' Madhavan added. 3 Israeli buses blown up in suspected 'terror attack'

Feb. 20 (UPI) -- Three buses have been blown up by explosives in the Israeli city of Bat Yam south of Tel Aviv in a suspected terrorist attack, police announced Thursday. Officers are searching for suspects and additional bombs. Aryeh Doron, an Israeli police spokesperson, called the event "ongoing" and said officers are trying to determine whether there are more explosives in Tel Aviv, the BBC reported. Explosive devices planted in two other buses failed to detonate, they said, but they raised concern that there could be more bombs hidden elsewhere. The transportation department has paused travel on buses, trains and other light rail cars while officers search them. "Our forces are still scouring the area," Doron told Channel 12, adding that the public must be on alert for every suspected bag or object. We may be lucky if indeed the terrorists set these timers to the wrong hour. But it's too early to determine," he explained. One of the unexploded devices, which weighed more than 10 pounds, was tagged with a message that read "Revenge from Tulkarem" -- referring to a recent Israeli military counter-terrorism operation in the West Bank, local media reported. A Hamas military unit in the West Bank claimed responsibility for the explosions. "The revenge of the martyrs will not be forgotten as long as the occupier remains on our land. This is a jihad of victory or martyrdom," the Tulkarm Battalion of Hamas said in a statement. Israel Katz, the country's defense minister, has directed officers to increase their presence and step up pressure in refugee camps in the West Bank. Police suspect the explosive devices originated there. "The explosive devices were found with timers. I can say they were crude; they appear to be from the West Bank," Chaim Sargrof, a district police commander in Tel Aviv, told local media. "This is an incident occurring simultaneously at multiple locations, Sargrof added. "As of now, searches on trains and buses have been completed, and we are working to determine how many suspects are involved." Police have not reported any casualties as a result of the explosions.

How dangerous is bird flu? Doctors say humans and pets should avoid any dead birds

A new CDC report shows an outbreak of bird flu among U.S. dairy and poultry workers, renewing concerns among dogwalkers and hikers in Massachusetts about how safe it is to be outdoors. The H5N1 virus isn't new but the resurgence of the bird flu has many people rethinking their daily routines. Keep dogs leashed Raptor Tales Rescue of Shrewsbury posted a video on their Facebook showing an adult bald eagle twitching and turning its neck, clear neurological symptoms of bird flu. Volunteer Matt Lame said after capturing and euthanizing the eagle, testing confirmed it. While wildlife volunteers wear plenty of PPE while outdoors, the typical dogwalker or hiker likely won't. "Try to keep your cats indoors, dogs I think should be on a leash when you're leash-walking," said Lame. "You should not have them drinking any of the ground water." There are signs around Jamaica Pond in Boston warning residents about bird flu in the area and instructing them not to feed, touch or remove birds from the area. "It goes through a list of things you should know because it is here," said one resident. Tufts Medicine Health Systems epidemiologist Dr. Shira Doron said the chances that people walking their dogs will get bird flu remains low. "We've had avian flu in wildlife for a long time and we have not seen cases due to casual contact with birds, walking through a park with a lot of bird droppings," said Doron. Chicken, duck and geese flocks at risk As for bird watchers, Boston resident Celeste Royce asked, "Bird feeders and how safe it is to put food out for songbirds?" "The birds that are affected by avian influenza are not those smaller backyard birds," said Doron. "If you have a backyard flock of chickens, ducks or geese, those are at risk." Doron's biggest piece of advice is to keep cats indoors and to keep pets away from dead geese and other birds.
