A whisky expert's favourite places for a dram in Edinburgh
The Black Cat is conveniently located on Rose Street, with a lovely selection of whiskies, and if you're looking for a fun and lively atmosphere, do come by on one of the nights when they have live music on. The outdoor seating spaces are also a great spot for people watching when the weather allows. For those particularly fond of cask strength and single cask whiskies, then the Scotch Malt Whisky Society Kaleidoscope Bar is a no-brainer to visit. Most of the Society venues are members only, but in the Queen Street townhouse, the ground-level bar welcomes anyone. For members, there are also exclusive spaces upstairs. I'd particularly recommend anything from Distillery no. 35, but the staff can also help with finding something that suits your palate. An often overlooked whisky bar is the Amber Bar at The Scotch Whisky Experience, which is located right by the castle. Don't worry about that location, this spot is not just for tourists. The Amber Bar is a great place to try Scottish whiskies - and at really good prices. The staff are happy to help with recommendations and can also put together flights tailored to your preferences. When I worked upstairs at the venue, the Glen Scotia Double Cask used to be one of my go-tos for an after-work dram. Cask & Vine is a bit of a newcomer on the bar scene in Edinburgh, but sits in a lovely location on the Canongate and has a great selection of whiskies, wine and food. It's a great spot to escape the crowds and enjoy a dram. It's also perfect if you also fancy a cheese and charcuterie board, which also happens to pair incredibly well with whisky. Don't forget to check if they have any tastings on, as they arrange both whisky and wine experiences regularly. The Devil's Advocate can be found tucked away in the Advocate's Close in the old town. They have a great whisky list, which makes it hard to pick out a dram and also a lovely food menu if you're looking for a snack or a meal. There is outdoor seating out the back on the terrace, and inside the brick walls provide a cosy setting which really makes you feel as if you're in the heart of the old town. Read more: If you are looking to enjoy your drams in an elegant and iconic setting, then why not stop by SCOTCH at The Balmoral? The whisky cages that fill an entire wall hold many flavourful spirits waiting to be enjoyed. It would be a shame not to speak with the SCOTCH team about whisky, as they are incredibly knowledgeable and love to chat. If you have a question or need a recommendation, do not hesitate to ask. If your Edinburgh adventures take you down to Leith, then don't miss out on Nauticus. This bar focuses primarily on Scottish drinks, so of course, that means plenty of whisky. It's one of the places where I enjoy asking for a recommendation from the team behind the bar the most, as it's always something fun and interesting. The interiors are gorgeous, and this nautical pub makes for a great spot for a dram - and they do great cocktails too if you would be so inclined. August is obviously all about fun and entertainment when the festival is in full swing, so continuing in the same fashion you should visit Teuchter's Landing in Leith (or the sister venue Teuchter's Bar & Bunker in the West End) for the "Hoop of Destiny" where you get to throw a hoop towards the bar and if you are lucky or skilled enough to land on one of the bottles, then that is the dram you will receive. And if you miss, then it's a consolation dram instead. Athletic Arms, or Diggers as it's fondly known by locals, is slightly further away from the city centre than the other options on this list, but if you're looking for a big selection of whiskies (over 500 different ones!), 35ml drams and great prices, then this is the place for you. A truly brilliant spot for whisky drinkers, just trust me on that one! The Macallan Reimagines Packaging for Timeless Collections
New design inspired by The Macallan Estate and crafted to reflect the legacy and future of the brand TORONTO, June 10, 2025 /CNW/ - The Macallan, renowned for its extraordinary single malt Scotch whiskies, has unveiled a striking new visual identity for its Timeless Collections: Double Cask, Sherry Oak, and Colour Collection. Blending 200 years of heritage with a forward-looking vision, the refreshed packaging reflects The Macallan's enduring dedication to craftsmanship, storytelling, and timeless design. While its package design has evolved, the whisky remains unchanged – delivering the same unmistakable taste, balance, and elegance that have always defined The Macallan. "The Macallan has never stood still and never will. This distinctive new identity offers a multitude of visual cues to tell our story, from the sherry seasoning, to the American and European oak casks which contribute to the complex taste and flavour profiles in every bottle of The Macallan," says Jaume Ferras, Creative Director at The Macallan. Rooted in two centuries of whisky mastery, the new packaging – designed by famed graphic designer and frequent creative collaborator with The Macallan, David Carson – brings The Macallan's heritage and innovation together, evoking the architectural silhouette of The Macallan Estate in Speyside, Scotland. Evocative New Vision David Carson's distinctive artistic lens helped bring the brand's ethos of tradition and progress to life. His interpretation draws on natural forms, architectural details, and the meeting of sherry wine and oak – foundational elements of The Macallan's incomparable character. The Macallan's redesigned look introduces thoughtful new elements: The Macallan Distillery's distinctive profile, with its sweeping green roof, informed the new bottle design, showcasing a direct connection between the packaging and The Macallan Estate. The triangular shoulder label links the newly designed Collections with the old, and represents Spain's Sherry Triangle – the Andalusian region famed for its sherry wine production, and the source of The Macallan's exceptional sherry seasoned oak casks, which influence the entirely natural colour and flavour of all three Collections. Rear label designs incorporate a new cask type symbol, bringing the tasting notes to life while highlighting the contribution of flavour and aroma imbued from American and European oak casks. Enhanced consumer engagement through continued investment in world-leading anti-counterfeit technology to provide greater traceability, while also providing further insight into the expression through a unique QR code. Three Timeless Collections, One Distinct Signature Grounded in oak and shaped by sherry, each of the three Collections showcases a different expression of The Macallan's signature character. Double Cask Collection: A harmonious marriage of American and European oak casks, seasoned with sherry wine from Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, delivering notes of fresh fruit, creamy toffee, and soft spice. Sherry Oak Collection: Matured exclusively in sherry-seasoned European oak casks, this collection offers deep, complex flavour with dried fruit, wood spice, and ginger that intensifies with age. Colour Collection: Reflecting the natural spectrum of golden hues found in The Macallan's whisky, this American oak-led series features vibrant notes of citrus, vanilla, and tropical fruit. The Macallan's global reimagining reflects a new chapter in its visual identity, and signals its continued commitment to craftsmanship, sustainability, and storytelling. The Macallan Double Cask and Sherry Oak Collections will be available at select retailers across Canada starting this summer. The Macallan Colour Collection will be available in global travel retail. The Macallan unveils 'striking new identity' for core range whiskies
Fans of The Macallan may notice something new about this in-demand brand, as the core range - Double Cask, Sherry Oak, and the Colour Collection - have a bold new look. The team worked with long-term collaborator David Carson on the designs and creative director at The Macallan Jaume Ferras told us more. Tell us about how and why the new designs came about? The Macallan reimagines the visual identity of its Timeless Collections to honour its rich heritage while embracing a forward-thinking vision. This new design, crafted in partnership with the renowned graphic designer David Carson – a long-standing collaborator for us – truly honours our rich heritage while embracing a forward-thinking vision. It's a celebration of the exceptional craftsmanship, creativity, and artistry that defines every single malt Scotch whisky we create. How do they offer a refreshed, modern perspective and vision for the future for the brand? The Macallan has never stood still and never will. Our refreshed identity is a heartfelt tribute to The Macallan's rich heritage, while powerfully embodying our ongoing commitment to innovation. Every detail in the new design thoughtfully connects our whisky's origins with its future, truly reinforcing our dedication to unparalleled craftsmanship and captivating storytelling. Tell us about the distillery-inspired bottle to symbols that decode cask influence and the crucial Sherry Triangle connection? How important was it to include these references? You'll see this directly in the new bottle's distinctive shape, which was inspired by the sweeping green roof of The Macallan Distillery itself, forging an immediate link to our Estate. Even the triangular shoulder label serves a dual purpose: it beautifully bridges our new Collections with our past, and, crucially, it represents Spain's Sherry Triangle – that famed Andalusian region, the very source of the exceptional sherry seasoned oak casks that give all three The Macallan Collections their entirely natural colour and incredible flavour. The rear label designs incorporate a new cask type symbol, to highlight the contribution of flavour and aroma imbued from American and European oak casks. How do these designs reflect past design work from Carson? We collaborated with David Carson because his bold, intuitive design approach reflects The Macallan's dedication to craftsmanship and creativity. Having previously worked together, David deeply understands The Macallan's heritage and connection to nature, making him the perfect choice to visually reimagine the Timeless Collections. Do you foresee the older designs now becoming collectors items? First and foremost, we craft our single malt to be enjoyed, and recognise that, while the majority of The Macallan releases are consumed, some individuals derive their enjoyment from collecting The Macallan for the future. It does not need to be mutually exclusive at all, we have found that consumers of The Macallan can purchase our single malt for many reasons: to open and consume; through an interest in investment; collecting because of a passion for the brand or to build-up a whisky collection to take personal pride in for years to come. Gifting is also a strong purchase-driver in many parts of the world. Any more future plans you can tell us about? We have a number of exciting initiatives in the pipeline As The Macallan steps into its 201st year, we look back on two centuries of unparalleled craftsmanship and innovation with immense pride. This isn't just an anniversary; it's a launchpad for the future, with even more extraordinary stories and expressions yet to emerge from The Macallan Estate in the next 200 years.
