Inside ‘Down Home Fab' Season 3: Chelsea Houska DeBoer's Cowboy Contemporary Style And Real-Life Chaos

Chelsea Houska DeBoer has been a household name since her teenage years, first appearing on MTV's 16 and Pregnant and later on Teen Mom 2. While she openly shared the challenges and chaos of young motherhood with the world, she's now showcasing her happily ever after on HGTV. DeBoer stars alongside her husband, Cole DeBoer, in the home renovation series Down Home Fab, which premiered its third season on May 27, 2025. After drawing 7.3 million viewers last season, the DeBoers are busier than ever with their Sioux Falls, South Dakota-based home renovation business. I recently spoke with DeBoer about the show, working with her husband, and what it's like to open a retail shop—all in front of the cameras. This season, reality hits home, almost literally. In the premiere episode, the DeBoers are interrupted mid-project by a phone call informing them that a car has crashed into their soon-to-open retail store. While design hiccups are common in home makeover shows, this twist is beyond anything even the savviest reality TV producers could script. Yet, the couple's first reaction—making sure no one was hurt—reveals their genuine character. DeBoer tells me, 'I think this season is more raw. It shows more personality, it shows more of us actually balancing all of the different parts of our life. Things are chaotic at all times over here and I'm glad to be showing the realness of that! Each of the eight episodes features a different makeover in DeBoer's signature Cowboy Contemporary style."This aesthetic is very Midwest-meets-West, with a touch of glam and a whole lot of fun." DeBoer describes it as a blend of rugged charm with clean, modern design. 'We like to mix natural textures like cowhide, wood, and metal with sleek lines and bold accents. It feels elevated and welcoming.' She also feels like the third season marks a new era for the show, showing her evolution as an interior designer. 'This season just feels extra special and different from previous seasons. We want to make sure we are always leveling up as we go and I think you can see that in the projects that we do. I feel like I've really honed in on what my personal style is and being able to sprinkle that into my designs,' explains the reality star. Still, Chelsea has appreciated the challenge. 'It's so fun to dive into someone else's style! It pushes me out of my own comfort zone and helps me grow as a designer for sure! And then seeing their reactions to the completed space, that will never get old!' But most importantly, she is incredibly grateful for her life. 'It's been a really exciting year for us! We always say we thrive in chaos—and it still holds true. Somehow, we just make it through. We try to remind ourselves that yes, it's a busy, busy time in our lives, but it's all because of such incredible things. Being able to stay grateful for everything we have—and for the reasons we're so busy—really helps. I think looking at it from a place of gratitude is what gets us through.' In the first episode, DeBoer renovates the home of a single mom who is a successful entrepreneur but definitely struggling to make her space work for both her business and family. The two women truly connect and end up designing spaces that feel equally stylish and practical. 'I'll always have a soft spot for single moms and just all moms in general,' she tells me. 'To hopefully take some weight off of Madison's shoulders for her, so she has one less thing to worry about, that feels really good. She doesn't need to be worrying about her home, she already has enough on her plate!' This season also covers the opening of their retail store, which sells a variety of items in the DeBoers' signature style. From furniture to accessories, it's the perfect curation of chic and kitschy. But it's also a real business venture, according to the reality star. 'Down Home by DeBoers is so special to us. To be able to have an actual brick and mortar and see people coming in to check it out has been so exciting. It really is an extension of everything we love. The vision was to create a place that feels warm and welcoming. Making it an experience for customers, whether they are looking for a candle, a small home accessory or need to furnish a whole room—we want to be the place for that!' The DeBoers also launched an e-commerce platform in 2025 (just in time for the premiere), which is a great way for those who won't be in Tea, South Dakota anytime soon to shop the look. 'Our online store is an extension of everything we have built in person. Same curated pieces, same lived in, western inspired style. We really worked hard to make it feel like you're walking through our shop, even from your phone!' But perhaps the best part for the husband-and-wife duo is working together. 'We are literally best friends. We enjoy being together all the time. We will go argue over a tile selection and then go laugh over lunch. It's all about balance and making sure we are enjoying the little moments. We are a team and how lucky are we that we get to experience all of this together?' Down Home Fab airs Tuesdays at 8:00pm/7:00 central on HGTV.

Sioux Falls' own HGTV stars are back for a third season

Get ready for even more South Dakota rustic, cowhide and bold design concepts, because Chelsea and Cole DeBoer not only return for season 3 of HGTV's 'Down Home Fab' on May 27, but also launch the much-anticipated online store. The season 3 premiere of 'Down Home Fab' will air at 7 p.m. Central Standard Time. As far as what to expect from the show's third season, the eight, one-hour-long episodes will feature warmer tones, more contemporary but still rustic styles and a few major milestones. 'We've been saying contemporary, because it's another spin on South Dakota glam. I don't really love glam, glam as much,' Chelsea DeBoer said. 'I think I like comfortable, lived in, warm and a little rustic flair.' And the DeBoers say they feel even more confident and 'true to themselves' in their design style and in the HGTV series spotlight compared with the first two seasons. 'Season one was like, we're on a new network, so it's kind of like the first day of high school," Cole DeBoer said. "You're worried about the group of mean girls, because it's a new audience who doesn't know you yet." Despite that, when season one debuted in early 2023, it attracted more than 6 million viewers and became HGTV's highest-rated freshman series since May 2022, which prompted a rare mid-season renewal,' according to HGTV. Season two topped those numbers and then some with a total of 7.3 million viewers in 2024. 'We just had a lot more fun this year, and we were like our true selves. We were confident, we were just having a lot of fun with it,' Cole DeBoer said in a previous Article Leader article. 'We also did the biggest project we've ever done." A few of those projects include the DeBoers taking on commercial spaces in the area. More: Is 'Down Home Fab' SD's 'Fixer Upper?' Sioux Falls' HGTV celebs are putting city on the map 'We're so excited for everyone to see this season, because it does feel different than the others, like we definitely went outside of our normal box,' Chelsea DeBoer said. The premiere opens with a single mother with health struggles who greatly needs a redesign that will function well for her home office and her three kids. In the meantime, the couple preparing for the grand opening of their brick-and-mortar, Down Home by DeBoers, in July 2024 in Tea, despite a few setbacks. The DeBoers recently celebrated the store's one-year anniversary in March. More: HGTV 'Down Home Fab' stars celebrate one year of brick-and-mortar store in Tea 'We say all the time that we want to do this show forever,' Chelsea DeBoer said. 'It means so much to us, and we're just having the best time.' While filming season three of 'Down Home Fab,' Chelsea and Cole DeBoer were simultaneously traveling to Grantville, Utah, near Salt Lake City, to star in season six of the HGTV series 'Rock the Block,' which premiered April 14. 'Rock the Block's' season finale airs 8 p.m. Central Standard Time on May 26. The DeBoers said they felt somewhat reluctant at first to star in the show, between raising their family, opening the store and filming 'Down Home Fab' at the same time. 'It was also very intimidating. I mean, being the network's biggest show, and you're on it with some original members that we've looked up to,' Cole DeBoer said. Through much organization and planning, the DeBoers were able to rise to the challenge, and they said they are both glad they did and are proud of what they accomplished with their house remodel. 'It was just so cool. Like Ty Pennington, I've watched 'Extreme Home Makeover' when I was little, and so just to be around there, it felt like an out-of-body experience, ' Chelsea DeBoer said. This season, two veteran design teams return to the block challenge to face off against two rookie design duos — one of which being the DeBoers. During six weeks, each team competes to transform the interior and exterior of four identical blank-slate homes within a limited budget of $250,000. The team with the highest home appraisal earns bragging rights and a street named after them. New this season, judges will tour the homes without the design teams present, keeping each team's work anonymous. Additionally, the weekly judges will remain a surprise until judging actually begins. 'Viewers expressed blind judging would be fairer to the teams competing — and we heard them,' said Jodi Scheer, executive producer of 'Rock the Block.' Both television shows will be available to stream the next day on Discovery+ and Max. But fans of the show have been yearning to shop the DeBoers' collection from their store, Down Home by DeBoers. On May 27, that wait will be over. The DeBoers said earlier this year the No. 1 goal for 2025 is to get an online store up and running so people from all over the world can browse decor, kitchen items, furniture and more for their homes. 'The most asked question we get is, 'Will you have an online store?' and it's happening,' Chelsea DeBoer said via social media. And the countdown on continues to tick to the second. Orders made the week of the launch may receive a special note of thanks from the DeBoer family. As the dust settles after Chelsea and Cole DeBoers' bustling schedule of filming two television series and opening their first brick-and-mortar, the couple wants to keep the momentum going. 'We have so many goals on our list,' Chelsea said. 'I'm thinking about becoming a doctor,' Cole joked. As for the question of a season four of 'Down Home Fab,' the DeBoers are eager and open to the opportunity, should it be renewed. 'And I love being able to work with my wife every day,' Cole DeBoer said. 'In the meantime, we love the chaos.' And the support from the community, they said, is one of the things that drives them. 'We feel so grateful for the support we've had in Sioux Falls, and the amount of people that come up to us when we're out, that watch us on both of our shows,' Cole DeBoer said. 'We just love Sioux Falls.' Vanessa Carlson Bender is the real estate and development reporter for the Sioux Falls Argus Leader.
