Sacramento to brighten K Street corridor with new marquee-style lights

Sacramento's K Street corridor will soon dazzle with new lights. Scott Ford, the deputy director of the Downtown Sacramento Partnership, says soon they'll flip the switch on marquee-style lights that will be added to 38 light poles along K Street. A pilot light was installed last year in downtown, the partnership says, and enough funding has been secured over the years to make the lights a reality. The additional lighting is meant to embrace K Street's rich history with marquees and be energy-efficient by using LED lights. "They are programmable from a single control system so when the Kings are playing, you know this whole thing can go purple," Ford says. "Throughout the seasons, it can be programmed, changing dynamic LED light patterns that reflect the season." The lights are part of the K Street LED Marquee Lighting Project. Ford says the lights are meant to enhance the K Street social scene, which is already brimming with activity from restaurants to bars with the Golden 1 Center just steps away. He says it's also meant to boost pedestrian activity and help people feel safe walking down K Street. "I think that adding lighting, adding vibrancy to what is really a critical pedestrian corridor in the heart of our city, I think it's going to pay dividends in the long term for continuing to see more investment, more positive activity, and really sending the signal that K Street is the epicenter of social activity for this region," Ford said. The Downtown Sacramento Partnership also believes the lights will only add to an already evolving entertainment scene. "The idea of entertainment zones starting to come online in Sacramento, where brick-and-mortar businesses can sell to-go drinks to patrons when there are special events happening, that starts to really create a whole different feeling to this K Street corridor," Ford says Crews started installing the lights Monday morning. The lights are expected to be up and running by the end of the month.

These downtown, Old Sacramento restaurants and bars have A's-themed food, drink specials

As the Oakland Athletics prepare for their first home opener in West Sacramento, dozens of downtown and Old Sacramento businesses are offering baseball-themed food and drink deals to welcome fans across the Tower Bridge. The Downtown Sacramento Partnership announced that 40 restaurants, bars and services are participating in a promotion aimed at drawing visitors before and after A's games at Sutter Health Park. The ballpark, located across the river in West Sacramento, is about a 10- to 15-minute walk from the city's core. 'We wanted to put something together to promote the downtown and Old Sacramento businesses throughout the A's season in West Sacramento,' said Andrew LaFrance, business development manager for the Downtown Sacramento Partnership. LaFrance said the organization expects nearly one million additional people to visit the area over the next five months. Participating establishments are offering game-day menu items, happy hour discounts and specialty cocktails tied to the A's return. Business owners anticipate a surge in foot traffic as baseball fans explore local venues. 'We have all these really vibrant restaurants and bars, really diverse offerings for a lot of the folks coming in to see the ball game,' LaFrance said. 'And I know people have time before the game, after the game, to hang out and spend time with their fellow baseball fans.' LaFrance said the initiative aimed to spotlight downtown and Old Sacramento businesses in a way that felt creative and engaging for the community. 'I think it's a really special moment in time for Sacramento, for West Sacramento,' LaFrance said. 'We have a huge population surge in terms of consumers looking for great drinks, great dining options, shopping experiences, all that downtown and Old Sacramento have to offer. … I think it's really important for Sacramentans to support their local businesses.' A full list of participating businesses can be found on the Downtown Sacramento Partnership website. Some participating restaurants and bars include: Grange Restaurant and Bar, 926 J St.: Bat and Ball, a beer and a shot for just $12 on game days Pampas Brazilian Steakhouse, 1111 J St.: Cucumber Curveball, A's $10 cocktail 7th Street Standard and Clayton Club, 1122 7th St.: 20% off food, excluding happy hour pricing, when wearing your A's gear on home game days. Amourath 1819, 1209 L St.: Home Run Happy Hour from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday throughout the season. Fizz Champagne Bar, 615 David J. Stern Walk, Suite 105: Game day special of two beers or two sparkling wines and duck fat fries for $30. Fanny Ann's Saloon, 1023 2nd St.: Get 20% off all food and drinks on game day when you show your game ticket before or after the game. Revival at The Sawyer, 500 J St.: Guests will receive a 20% discount on their entire check when they show their MLB ticket stub for any game throughout the season. Coin-Op Game Room, 908 K St.: $5 select draft beers, $10 whole pizzas and $2 pizza slices Darling Aviary, 712 K St.: The A's DAWG: a quarter-pound all-beef dog, housemade sauerkraut, housemade sauce, bacon bits and pickled Fresno peppers 'Going to an Athletics game and making sure to visit your favorite restaurant or your favorite bar or to try something new is a great way to kind of celebrate the whole day instead of just going to the game and then going home,' LaFrance said. 'I think people should interact with the community and really come out and support the business community as well as see the game.'

$6 million in grants awarded to city to help restore Old Sacramento

SACRAMENTO — The City of Sacramento is getting millions of dollars to help fix up Old Sacramento, but the historic district is showing signs of its old age and has a long list of things that need to be fixed. The city is getting more than $6 million in state and federal grants to help make waterfront repairs. Near the top of the list is restoring the barge where the Delta King riverboat is docked. The city noted that the historic paddlewheeler may have to move to another location if the barge continues to deteriorate. "The Delta King is iconic to the area. It has a great significance," said Delta Pick Mello, executive director of the Sacramento History Museum. "We don't want to lose that." Another priority project is fixing the wooden boardwalks. "The boardwalks are essential, people just step back into time when they go on these boardwalks," Mello said. The city says there's over one mile of raised walkways in Old Sacramento, with wood that is deteriorating and needs to be replaced. Other items include renovating the public market buildings and fixing the former Rio City Cafe, which closed last summer after its outdoor dining deck was declared unsafe. The grants are just a fraction of the estimated $40 million it will cost to fully renovate Old Sacramento. Other money will come from the city's hotel tax. "We've got about 160 property and business owners in Old Sacramento that I think over the years would tell you they've waited for an opportunity to see this type of investment," said Michael Ault, executive director of the Downtown Sacramento Partnership. Plans also include building a new children's playground along the waterfront where the old schoolhouse is currently located.
