Jake Doyle-Hayes and Francely Lomboto set for a Sligo Rovers exit

Midfielder Doyle-Hayes, who joined the Bit O'Red in February after being released by Hibernian, looks likely to join League One side Exeter after Gary Caldwell's side activated his release clause. It is understood a previous approach for the Cavan native was turned down. Doyle-Hayes, who was a youth player at Aston Villa, has been a key player for John Russell's side this season. The midfielder has played 18 league games, and scored in Rovers' 2-0 FAI Cup win over Dundalk. He sat out the trip to Cork City last week due to suspension having accumulated 10 bookings, his second suspension of the season after being sent off after full-time in the 1-0 defeat to Derry City back in March. It would appear as though Rovers were preparing for Doyle-Hayes' departure, with John Russell signing former Derry midfielder Ciaron Harkin earlier this week. Striker Francely Lomboto is set for a Rovers exit too, with the former Galway man about to join NIFL Premiership side Glenavon. The 25-year-old has had to make do with mainly appearances off the bench this season, but has netted four goals in his 25 appearances. Lomboto scored the winner against his former side Galway when he came on as a sub in June. Glenavon, who recently signed Stephen Mallon from Sligo Rovers, are in pre-season at present and will get their season underway on Saturday, August 9. Speaking earlier this week after the signing of Harkin, manager John Russell said his squad size is now probably where it should be, having brought in six players and lost two in the window. But the departures of Doyle-Hayes and Lomboto will bring to six the number of Rovers players who have left in this window. 'Some players have left, we've lost some good players. We sold Reece Hutchinson, Stephen Mallon has left, we had Harvey Lintott on loan, obviously Connor Malley is gone. 'We've four out, we've brought in six. We had a small squad anyway, so when you look at it as four out and six in but we're probably where we should be.' Asked if he will look to bring in any more players, with Rovers still able to sign out-of-contract players, Russell said: 'I'd love to bring one more in, the window closed last night to sign players who are contracted to other clubs but we'll see.'

Quickfire double sees Sligo Rovers past Dundalk

FAI Cup: Dundalk 0 Sligo Rovers 2 (McManus 51, Doyle-Hayes 54) Two goals inside four second half minutes from James McManus and Jake Doyle-Hayes saw Sligo Rovers avoid another early FAI Cup exit at the hands of First Division leaders Dundalk at Oriel Park. The Bit O Red, whose manager John Russell was missing due to illness, have gone out of the Cup in the early rounds in each of the previous four seasons, including following a 2-0 defeat at home to UCD last year. A prospect of another shock appeared on the cards when Ciaran Kilduff's side bossed first half proceedings but a screamer from on-loan Bohs midfielder McManus and a header from Doyle-Hayes ensured that Sligo's dreams of a sixth FAI Cup win remain alive in 2025. The visitors almost got off to a dream start when Will Fitzgerald slipped Jad Hakiki in on the left inside the opening two minutes but he was denied by Enda Minogue at close range at the expense of a corner. That would prove to be Sligo's only noteworthy attempt of the opening half, with Dundalk slowly growing into it after a nervous opening. Goalkeeper Sam Sargeant was one of Sligo's star performers on the night and he was called into action on 24 minutes when he pushed Harry Groome's effort away from long range. The former Bray Wanderers midfielder then should have given the Louth men the lead in first-half stoppage time when he was picked out by JR Wilson but he could only pull his effort wide. Sligo then hit the front within six minutes of the restart with a stunning strike from McManus, who met a partially cleared corner at the edge of the box with a stunning right footed strike that flew past Minogue to the top right hand corner. It was then 2-0 on 54 minutes with Will Fitzgerald's cross from the left flicked on by the head of Doyle-Hayes and into the bottom right hand corner. To their credit, Dundalk didn't throw in the towel with Sargeant denying both Gbemi Arubi and Daryl Horgan either side of an attempt from Andy Paraschiv that dipped just over. Dean Ebbe also had a big chance to set up a tense finale but despite beating Sargeant with six minutes to go, his effort lacked the power to cross the line. DUNDALK: Minogue; Wilson, Leonard, Sean McHale (O'Keeffe 22), Keogh (Spaight 71); Dervin, Tracey (Parashiv 61); McDaid (Kenny 61), Groome, Horgan; Arubi (Ebbe 61). SLIGO ROVERS: Sargeant; Reynolds, Denham, McClean, Fitzgerald; Doyle-Hayes (Patton 66), McManus; Elding, Hakiki, O'Kane (McDonagh 77); Waweru (Quirk HT). Referee: Aaron O'Dowd.

Sligo midfielder Doyle-Hayes sues Hibs over injury caused by manager's tackle

Ex-Ireland U21 midfielder Jake Doyle-Hayes is suing his former club Hibernian over an injury he suffered in a tackle by his then-manager. Doyle-Hayes (26) lodged a compensation action against the Scottish Premiership club at the Court of Session in Edinburgh on Wednesday. His legal team claims the midfielder's career had been "greatly restricted" by the ankle issue sustained in a tackle by Lee Johnson in 2022. The Cavan native is currently at Sligo Rovers, whom he joined in February, but his representatives insist in their case: "Jake's career has been derailed by mismanagement and ineptitude. A career has been lost to this athlete." Doyle-Hayes joined Aston Villa as a trainee, moving on to play for St Mirren in Scotland. He spent four years at Hibernian, making only 69 appearances, due to his playing time 'being hampered by injury over the last two seasons". This stemmed from what Thompsons Solicitors described as "horrific injuries" suffered in the incident during the training session, leading to surgery on his ankle. They argue that, without the injury, his career would have continued at a higher level. A figure of compensation being sought wasn't disclosed, only that the potential loss of earnings was substantial. Joel Shaw, partner at the firm, said: "The impact of this has greatly restricted his career. "These injuries should never have happened and were incurred due to incompetent and incoherent decisions made by his manager. "Jake's career has been derailed by mismanagement and ineptitude. A career has been lost to this athlete." Johnson was sacked by Hibs in August 2023. A Hibs spokesperson told the BBC they were aware of the claim.
