HC directs NTRUHS to treat NEET-qualified A.P. domicile candidates as ‘local'
A Division Bench of the Andhra Pradesh (A.P.) High Court led by Chief Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur and comprising Justice Ravi Cheemalapati directed the Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences (NTRUHS) to permit a batch of 53 A.P.-domicile applicants as local candidates in the State of A.P. and directed the university to let them fill up physical application forms and accept the same, thereby allowing them to be registered as local candidates in A.P. and process their applications accordingly. The court granted the interim relief in two lunch motion petitions filed on Monday on behalf of 53 students and after hearing counsels P.V.G. Umesh Chandra and K. Subba Rao who appeared for the petitioners. The court posted the matter for further hearing on August 14 while directing the NTRUHS and the State government to file their counters. The contention raised in the petitions was that the recent notification issued by the NTRUHS disentitles students who studied up to Class 10 in A.P. labelling them as non-local candidates as they studied their Intermediate outside the State (A.P.). The petitioners sought the declaration of the notification and prospectus dated July 22, 2025 issued by the NTRUHS, wherein it has been prescribed that the candidates should have studied or resided for not less than four consecutive academic years preceding the date of commencement of the qualifying examination in A.P. to be treated as local candidates as per relevant and Rule 9 (1) followed by the university as violative of Articles 14, 19 and 21 of the Constitution, and a direction to the NTRUHS to treat them as local candidates for all the purposes of admission to MBBS and BDS courses 2025-2026.

Expert throws light on life-saving technology during meeting with healthcare professionals
Suneel Pooboni, working as a paediatric medical care consultant at a hospital in Dubai, raised awareness among the healthcare community about a life-saving technology — Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) — and discussed with others the scope of its application in government and private hospitals in the State. In a virtual meeting, organised by the Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences (NTRUHS) at its campus on Monday, Dr. Suneel Pooboni gave a lecture titled 'The way forward in critical care journey: Is ECMO possible in our set up?'. Dr. Suneel Pooboni said that ECMO is used in cases following severe lung problems such as pneumonia, when ventilator treatment fails or following a heart attack, when the heart fails to supply enough blood to the body. He said ECMO can be used under similar circumstances when the routine conventional intensive care cannot support bodily functions. It is a temporary process till the lungs or heart recovers, he added. He added that the technology is widely used in the western world, and that in India, some corporate hospitals have begun to use it. For establishing the unit, adequate facilities and training of doctors and nurses are required, he said, adding that training is important as a patient may develop complications while being treated through ECMO. He also said that there is a possibility of a patient developing a new infection during the ECMO treatment, and in such cases, the chances of failure are more. However, in case of no infections, the chances of a positive outcome are more. When there are no infections, the chances of survival in people with severe respiratory problems is approximately 60 per cent and in those with cardiac problems, the percentage is 50. Principals, superintendents, students from government and private medical colleges in the State took part in the virtual meeting.

Tension at NTRUHS as students clash with police opposing privatisation of government medical colleges
In a protest against the proposed privatisation of newly-established government medical colleges in Andhra Pradesh, student leaders affiliated with the YSRCP students' wing laid siege to Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences (NTRUHS) on Monday. The protest witnessed high tension as students clashed with police, resulting in a brief scuffle. The protesting students demanded that the 17 government medical colleges, established during the tenure of former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, should not be handed over to private partners under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. They warned that such a move would deprive poor and meritorious students of affordable medical education. Addressing the gathering, YSRCP State student wing president Panuganti Chaitanya and State working president A. Ravichandra emphasised that these colleges were established with a vision to make medical education accessible to underprivileged students. They pointed out that the Jagan government had allocated ₹8,480 crore for the development of these institutions. 'In the 2023–24 academic year alone, 150 MBBS seats each were sanctioned to five new colleges in Vizianagaram, Rajahmundry, Eluru, Machilipatnam, and Nandyal, totalling 750 seats,' they said. Additional seats were approved later for colleges in Pulivendula, Paderu, Madanapalle, Markapuram, and Adoni. However, after the change in government, the coalition administration allegedly failed to pursue further approvals or expansion efforts, they added. They further criticised Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan, HRD Minister Nara Lokesh, and the TDP-JSP-BJP alliance for remaining silent on the issue. 'Privatisation will lead to commercialisation, and students unable to afford lakhs of rupees will be pushed out of medical education,' they alleged.

Day 4: Protesting FMGs taken away to police stations, detained for nearly 5 hours
Once again, Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs), who had gathered outside the gates of Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences on Thursday demanding answers from A.P. Medical Council Chairman and Registrar on the status of Permanent Registrations (PRs), were taken away to different police stations. On the fourth day of the protest, around 100 graduates came for the protest, at Dharna Chowk in Vijayawada. Later, around 2 p.m., they came to the university and waited for the APMC Registrar to come outside. When he did not come, the graduates tried to seek answers from the APMC Chairman D. Sreehari Rao, who had just arrived at the university. As the students tried to stop his car, one of them was injured. The boy was later taken to the hospital. The other protestors were detained at different police stations for almost five hours. Deploring the ill-treatment of graduates by the police, they said that all they wanted was answers from the APMC Chairman and Registrar on why, even after one year, they do not have answers in regards to their PRs. Meanwhile, the issue has acquired a political turn with former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy putting out a post on social media supporting the FMGs. The graduates clarified that they are not associated with any party and only hoped that more academic years are not wasted. Many have been waiting for PRs since May 2024. When asked about why the police personnel were present near the university, APMC Chairman, Mr. Sreehari Rao, said that the police arrived on the spot to avert any incident at the time of the Chief Minister's convoy passing. He also added that the involvement of student unions, including All India Students' Federation and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, escalated the matter. Regarding the status of PRs, the Chairman said that the government is in favour of the FMGs, and that the APMC members would be going to New Delhi next week to get clarity from the National Medical Commission (NMC) regarding the duration of the internship.
