Selangor assembly to debate Putra Heights gas blaze, says Speaker

SHAH ALAM, July 7 — The Putra Heights gas pipeline fire incident in Subang Jaya will be debated in the current sitting of the Selangor State Legislative Assembly, said Speaker Lau Weng San. He said the debate would take place after a special briefing to be delivered by Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari or his representative, following the tabling of the Selangor State Islamic Religious Administration (Amendment) Enactment Bill 2025 during this sitting. 'There will be (a debate); as I mentioned earlier, after the Menteri Besar meets with all assemblymen to provide a briefing in the afternoon. '... after that, the assembly will reconvene, and all of us will take part in the debate. The government will provide clarification on the matters raised (in the debate),' he said during the Selangor State Assembly sitting today. Earlier, Dr Afif Bahardin (PN-Taman Medan) submitted an appeal on behalf of 20 individuals affected by the April 1 blaze and explosion, requesting that the matter be discussed in the current sitting. Lau then disallowed the matter from being tabled as it was seen to overlap with an application already filed by Amirudin to present the matter during this sitting. 'I wish to stress that the main reason the appeal was disallowed is because there is already an application from the Menteri Besar to discuss this issue under this agenda, which will allow for greater participation from all assemblymen,' he said. The Selangor State Assembly sitting began today and will run until July 11. — Bernama

Perikatan confirms Solaris Dutamas HQ shut after lease ended, denies claims of unpaid rent

KUALA LUMPUR, July 6 — Perikatan Nasional's (PN) headquarters in Solaris Dutamas, Kuala Lumpur has been closed following the expiry of its two-year lease in April, the coalition's secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali has confirmed. Azmin said the decision not to renew the lease was reached through mutual agreement between the landlord and tenant, and was approved by PN's top leadership. 'This matter was informed to and agreed upon by the PN top leadership,' he was quoted saying by Sinar Harian. 'Nonetheless, the administration and operations of the PN headquarters continue as usual, handled by officers and staff at an unofficial location, while a new premises is being prepared.' He also criticised media reports claiming the closure was due to unpaid rent dating back to March, calling them unfounded and irresponsible. Meanwhile, Selangor PN secretary Dr Afif Bahardin said the coalition remains operational despite being without a physical office for now. 'We didn't shut down [operations], but the [rental] contract has ended. We are in the middle of finding a new location to turn into an office,' he told Malaysiakini. He said meetings are ongoing and there is no issue of the party ceasing operations. The Solaris Dutamas office had served as the venue for PN Supreme Council meetings since the coalition was formed in 2020. PN deputy chairman Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin was previously quoted saying he was unaware of the specific circumstances of the closure, stating that such matters were under Azmin's purview.

Ex-PKR man questions Nurul Izzah's track record in policymaking

Bersatu's Dr Afif Bahardin said promoting leaders based solely on political pedigree is a betrayal of meritocracy. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : As Nurul Izzah Anwar attempts to become PKR deputy president, a former PKR Youth leader said her performance and policy record, not her political pedigree, should be under scrutiny. Dr Afif Bahardin, who joined Bersatu after quitting PKR in 2020, said Nurul Izzah had yet to demonstrate the leadership, initiative or policy vision expected of a national-level leader. Afif criticised her past roles in government, including her brief 2018 appointment to lead a special committee under the education ministry on strengthening technical and vocational education and training (TVET). 'Not only did she fail to deliver any policies or meaningful ideas, she even 'ran away' from the responsibility halfway through,' he said in a Facebook post today. He also took aim at her current role as co-chair of the secretariat assisting Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's advisory committee in the finance ministry. 'Throughout that period (of two years), no major policy was launched under her name, and no structural reform has been linked to her role,' he said, adding that the appointment itself had also triggered controversy over family ties within government. Afif warned against promoting leaders based solely on political pedigree, calling it a betrayal of meritocratic values, especially at a time when Malaysians were grappling with economic hardship and political fatigue. He pointed to Nurul Izzah's defeat in the 2022 general election in Permatang Pauh, a seat held by her father Anwar since 1982, as a sign that voters were growing tired of 'legacy politics without added value'. 'Politics is not an arena for inherited thrones. It is a platform of public trust. And that trust cannot be bought with a family name. It must be built with performance and integrity,' he said. 'If Nurul Izzah truly wishes to be seen as a genuine leader, she must step out from her father's shadow, face criticism, and come forward with fresh ideas, concrete policies and the ability to build grassroots support based on confidence, not nostalgia.' Nurul Izzah will face incumbent Rafizi Ramli in the race for the deputy presidency. However, her candidacy has been marred by criticisms of nepotism.
