Countless doctors have now weighed in on former President Joe Biden 's shock diagnosis of aggressive prostate cancer. And the consensus opinion seems to be that his story just doesn't add up. 'This abrupt presentation defies any typical case that I've ever seen,' board-certified urologist Dr David Shusterman wrote for the Daily Mail. 'In my experience, prostate cancer of this severity doesn't develop overnight.' Oncologist Dr Zeke Emanuel, who once worked in the Biden White House, speculated that Biden likely had cancer while serving as president. 'He's had this for many years, maybe even a decade, growing there and spreading,' he claimed on MSNBC's on Monday. 'It is a little surprising to many of us oncologists that he wasn't diagnosed earlier.' Well, as a prostate cancer survivor, I have sympathy for the president, but I, too, have questions. It is difficult for me to imagine that the leader of the free world would have been so oblivious to such an easily detectable – and treatable! – disease. After all, prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men in the US and the second-leading cause of cancer deaths. My fight with prostate cancer was typical. Around four years ago, I received the troubling results of a routine blood test revealing that I had an elevated PSA level. That is a measure of Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA), a protein produced by the prostate gland and present in blood. PSA is routinely monitored in men over the age of 50 – or even younger in those that have a family history of cancer. A physical examination by my doctor confirmed that there was a small lesion on my prostate. Then came a battery of other tests. An MRI came back pretty clean but a '4K score' test determined that I had a 30 percent chance of having an aggressive form of the disease. A biopsy of the tumor confirmed that I had an early-stage malignancy. The diagnosis was terrifying. I immediately called my brother, a doctor himself, who calmed me down, explaining that we had caught the cancer early. It wasn't some death sentence. Typical treatments for prostate cancer include chemotherapy, radiation, hormone therapy or total prostate removal. I opted for a less aggressive approach – cryoablation, which uses cold temperatures to kill the cancerous cells. And three years later, I'm still standing with thanks to my incredible doctors and family. But wouldn't the president have had access to equal, if not better, health care? Beyond my skepticism of Biden's story, I feel a sense of sadness for him... and our country. Early detection and treatment of prostate cancer result in much higher survival rates, but the prognosis for late-stage prostate cancer is grim. Tumors that have metastasized, or spread to other areas such as the bone, as we're told Biden's had, result in five-year survival rates as low as 30 percent. While no one knows the specifics of his medical history, there's questions that have only fueled speculation about the alleged cover-up of the president's cognitive decline and health issues – striking yet another blow to public trust in government. The sick irony of this entire episode is that Joe Biden – throughout his entire public life – has demonstrated a commitment to finding a cure for cancer. He, of course, lost his son Beau to brain cancer in 2015 – and as vice president he launched the Cancer Moonshot initiative, which aimed to fund research and improve the lives of cancer victims. Yes, Biden is older, and was well into his 70s when elected president. Older people often stop testing for prostate cancer because the disease is slow moving. But he's not an everyman; Biden is the leader of the free world, which relies on his health. This same man claims to have skipped routine screenings himself? It boggles the mind. Though if there is any positive lesson to be taken from this troubling news, it is that every man should take cancer screenings seriously. A little prevention and preparation can go a long way.

Dr Zeke Emanuel said: "He's had this for many years, maybe even a decade, growing there and spreading." Biden announced his cancer diagnosis in an official statement from his personal office on Sunday. The statement said that he was seen by doctors last week after suffering urinary symptoms, with a prostate nodule then being found. He was then diagnosed with prostate cancer on Friday, with the cancer cells having spread to the bone. The statement read: "Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms. "On Friday, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone. "While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management. "The President and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians." What are the symptoms every man needs to know? In most cases, prostate cancer doesn't have any symptoms until the growth is big enough to put pressure on the urethra – that tube you pee through. Symptoms include: Needing to urinate more often, especially at night Needing to rush to the toilet Difficulty in starting to pee Weak flow Straining and taking a long time while peeing Feeling that your bladder hasn't emptied fully Many men's prostates get larger as they age because of the non-cancerous conditions, prostate enlargement, and benign prostatic hyperplasia. In fact, these two conditions are more common than prostate cancer – but that doesn't mean the symptoms should be ignored. The signs that cancer has SPREAD include bone, back, or testicular pain, loss of appetite, and unexplained weight loss. A Gleason score of 9 means the cancerous cells "look very abnormal" and that the disease is "likely to grow quickly", according to Cancer Research UK. Biden has previously struggled with his physical health, with some saying he had grappled with numerous health issues during his final year in office. Biden served as US president from 2021 to 2025, with his term ending on January 20 when Donald Trump took office. There had been reports in the past Biden was "disoriented and out of it" during cabinet talks and that he had also struggled to recall certain memories, including that of his son Beau's tragic death in 2015. Biden was also forced to step down from his campaign for a second term in office, with the Democratic Party nomination being succeeded by his much-younger vice-president Kamala Harris, amid fears over Biden's cognitive health. .
