Movies to see this week: 'Spirited Away,' 'Star Trek,' 'Tremors'

The Minneapolis-St. Paul International Film Festival is underway at movie theaters around the Twin Cities. There is a lot to be excited about there. However, we've dug into that elsewhere. This week's look at repertory movies around will stick to what it does, looking at repertory screenings, including the Hitchcock Film Festival and a lot more. Here's what to catch this April 5 at The Parkway Theater Look away from the ugly Studio Ghibli knock-off AI art that briefly flooded the internet last week and toward something visually stunning. As part of its run of Hayao Miyazaki classics, The Parkway Theater is screening Spirited Away, one of the director's most stunning and engaging movies. Additionally, a new restoration of Princess Mononoke is playing in a whole lot of theaters around the Twin Cities. Details on all of those screenings can be found in the listings below. 4814 Chicago Ave., Minneapolis ($5–$10) Saturday, April 5 and Monday, April 7 at Alamo Drafthouse Tremors continues to be perplexing in wonderful ways. How did this comedy/horror (it leaned more toward horror in this first of its seven installments) wind up with a cast that included Kevin Bacon and Reba McEntire? How did Michael Gross transition from Family Ties to being the face of this franchise? In the end, all that matters is that the Graboid adventure remains absurdly fun with delightful practical effects. 9060 Hudson Rd., Woodbury ($13.06) Sunday, April 6–Monday, April 7 at Oakdale Cinema, Parkwood Cinema, Rosemount Cinema, and West End Cinema Equally beloved and derided, The Wrath of Khan is one of the most enduring Star Trek movies. (Even the newer films had to return to him.) Maybe it's because Ricardo Montalban managed to match the hammy performance of William Shatner. Maybe it's because everyone likes to yell Khan! like George Costanza. Various locations, ($8.62) Monday, April 7 at Heights Theater This is a quintessential action-adventure blockbuster of the 50s. It goes big in every way a movie from this era can, with underwater sequences, a giant squid battle, and Kirk Douglas singing a duet with a seal. (Yes, that last one is real and not a joke.) The effects are dated, sure, but not nearly as much as you might expect. 3951 Central Ave NE, Columbia Heights, ($13–$13.75) Movies screening around the Twin Cities this week: April 3: Inland Empire (2006) at Alamo Drafthouse April 3 and 6: Blue Velvet (1986) at Grandview Theatre April 3: Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) at The Parkway Theater April 3: Hoosiers (1995) at Emagine Willow Creek April 3–8: Princess Mononoke (1997) at AMC Eden Prairie, AMC Rosedale, and AMC Southdale April 4: Scream It Off Screen at The Parkway Theater April 4: Dune (1984) at Alamo Drafthouse April 4–9: Princess Mononoke (1997) at Oakdale Cinema, Parkwood Cinema, and West End Cinema (not April 9) April 4–5: Diva (1981) at Walker Art Center April 4–6: Blade (1998) in 35mm at The Trylon Cinema April 5: Waffles and Minecraft Block Brunch at Oakdale Cinema and Parkwood Cinema April 5 and 8: Princess Mononoke (1997) at Emagine Eagan April 6: Empire Records (1995) at Audrey Rose Vintage April 6: The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) at Roxy's Cabaret April 6: The Notebook (2004) at Emagine Eagan, Emagine Lakeville, Emagine White Bear, and Emagine Willow Creek April 6: Little Big League (1994) at Nicollet Island Pavilion (free) April 6: Smiley Face (2007) at Alamo Drafthouse April 6–8: Beau Travail (1992) at The Trylon Cinema April 7: Killer Party (1986) at Emagine Willow Creek April 7: Mystery Machine at Alamo Drafthouse April 7: Marcus Mystery Movie at Oakdale Cinema, Parkwood Cinema, Rosemount Cinema, Southbridge Crossing Cinema, and West End Cinema April 7 and 9: The Hunger Games (2012) at Alamo Drafthouse April 8: Demons (1985) at Alamo Drafthouse
