DES MOINES, Iowa — The final day of the 2025 Drake Relays brought many exciting races for fans and participants. Waukee northwest girls finished first in three different races Saturday, winning the 4×400 meter, Girls' Shuttle Hurdles, and Girls' 4×100. Avery Winter, a runner on the Waukee Northwest Girls' 4×400 meter relay team, said that the Drake Relays are a warmup for the State Meet. 'I think it was just really showing all the hard effort that we put in year round. We're always working towards these big meets, but once again, big means State. This is just another step to complete the best what you can today and work through any hiccups that you're going to have.' Winter said. NFL draft ends, nine Hawkeyes, Cyclones enter the NFL The Johnston High School Boys' Track and Field team also had an impressive performance at the Drake Relays where they won both the 4×100 meter race and the 4×400 meter race. The Johnston High School Boys' Track and Field team broke a Drake Relays record with their 4×400 meter time. Jashua Anglo, the anchor on the Johnston Boys' 4×400 meter relay team, said that his teammates put him in a position to win the race. 'As soon as I saw Urness come in here with the stick, I knew it was over because they were just in such good position from the beginning of the run till the end. We were perfect position and if we weren't passing the stick first it close enough to first year in the race, That's what they did. They kept me in the race and we won the race.' Anglo said. DES MOINES, Iowa — Travis Geopfert, the head coach of Kansas State University's Track and Field Team, brought gold medal Olympic and Paralympic athlete husband and wife duo Tara Davis-Woodhall and Hunter Woodhall with him to the Drake Relays this year. Geopfert said he has a long history with the Drake Relays. 'This place, this place is just so special to me in so many ways, you know, from from high school to college at northern Iowa. And then I won a couple of Drake Relays decathlon titles and to be back on the blue Oval, you know, coaching at Kansas State now is just, it's just awesome,' Geopfert said. Records break in Drake Relays Friday afternoon session Geopfert said he was honored to bring Tara Davis-Woodhall and Hunter Woodhall with him to the Drake Relays this year. 'Hunter and Tara they bring this show wherever they're at and those two just dynamic personalities, unbelievably great people, and I am just so appreciative of them,' Geopfert said. Geopfert said the Relays help inspire the next generation of athletes. 'It's getting that interest started, you know, and that's what we walk through here with Hunter and Tara and all these high school kids are waving and excited. And so, you know, those memories, you know, at an early age are invaluable. And I think there's, there's so many unbelievably great track and field stars from the state of Iowa. WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — Iowa Law Enforcement and the Drug Enforcement Administration are partnering up for Drug Take Back Day. The goal of Drug Take Back Day is to reduce overdoses and ensure that medications don't end up in the wrong hands. Last fall, Iowa Public Safety reported Iowans turned in nearly 8,200 pounds of unwanted medicine. To date, the state has also reported that 107 tons of unused medication were safely disposed of. 'There is an immediate apparent value in getting unwanted, expired, unneeded medication out of the home environment. Whether that is to prevent access to accidental consumption or intentional consumption, this is a great mechanism to get those things out of the house so they can be disposed of safely,' West Des Moines Sergeant Dan Wade said. DES MOINES, Iowa — Friday and Saturday are the biggest and busiest days of the week at the 115th Drake Relays where many white victory flags are handed out, and even some records are broken. The high school boys sprint medley, Norwalk put up a fight finishing second, but Dowling Catholic had almost a four second advantage as they won first with Sam Drexler, Jackson Miller, Travis Lembechwa and Owen Wolfe. The winning time was 3:25.35, a new season's best, and 1:50.78 for the anchor Wolfe, a Drake Relays record. 'It's nothing less than amazing. It's something we knew we could do coming into today. We have to run 3:26,' Wolfe said. 'We've always had a lot to look up to. Our school record is 3:25. Just to be a part of history of something, you always want as an athlete. To finally be able to say we wrote our names in history books, it's nothing short of amazing.' In girls 100 meter hurdles, Valley West Des Moines' Emma Havighurst looked to dominate. She was the top seed and she proved it finishing in 13.82 seconds, which is a new Drake Relays and state record. She's the fastest 100m girl hurdler in Iowa prep history. 'It was so awesome. I knew I had goals at the end of the season to do that. I'm just so happy I got to do it so early in the season. I can keep cutting it down from there,' Havighurst said. 'It was just a surreal feeling, I knew I just wanted to work hard in this final and make it pretty and have fun with it so.' The wolves victorious with Avery Winter, Avery Vogt, Aunya Van Zetten and Katie Willits. A winning time of 1:40.97, a four-peat. 'I would just say it gives you a lot of pressure and it makes you run faster that everybody is after you,' Willits said. 'It's an amazing feeling every year. It's never the same,' Van Zetten said. In the boys 4×200, it was another close one. Newton right there next to Ankeny Centennial, but the Jaguars got the advantage and win it 1:26.55. That's a Drake Relay record. That team was made up of Robert McGhee, Cael Woods, Caleb Reed, Braeden Jackson. In the boys 100 meter final, a few guys looking shoulder to shoulder, but it's Dowling Catholic's Luke Nevitt getting there just a tad faster to win it at 10.57. 'It felt great. To have all that hard work pay off, I knew god was with me,' Nevitt said. 'You just have to trust your technique, trust all the hard work and make sure it pays off. This is my first year being at Drake in the sprints. It's awesome.' In college action with the women's 800 final, Drake's own Emilie Meyer winning 2:03.95, a personal record. Meanwhile, the pros compete on Saturday but some checked out the blue oval on Friday. Olympic gold medalists Tara and Hunter Woodhall spoke to the media. Tara won gold in the long jump in Paris, and her husband Hunter won the 400 at the Paralympics. 'Oh boy, it's insane out there. The fans are here, they're ready for a show tonight, a show tomorrow,' Tara said. 'It's exciting for us to be here. I haven't been here since 2018. I was also here when I was just a young pup competing at the Jr. Olympics. It's exciting to be back and be back with our coach who is from here.' 'I just like looking around. I feel like the energy is building,' Hunter said. 'Just looking around seeing the stands all the way around, the cement. It's so sick. I can't wait to see it tomorrow. Hopefully we can go out there and give them a show.' Friday's action continues with the evening session and then the grandest day begins on Saturday morning. DES MOINES, Iowa — A police chase on Friday morning resulted in the arrest of a December armed robbery suspect. At around 11 a.m. a 911 call came in reporting that there were two masked suspects stealing a pickup truck in the 1500 block of East Diehl Avenue, the DMPD said. By the time officers arrived at the scene the truck was gone. Roughly an hour later, the DMPD said another 911 caller reported seeing 'suspicious activity' in the 800 block of Vale Street, which included two masked individuals moving between a vehicle that matched the description of the stolen truck and another vehicle. Responding officers located the stolen truck at the intersection of SE 9th Street and Vale Street, but when they got close to the truck it sped off, the DMPD said. Iowa governor sues the Des Moines Register to stop request of emails she claims are protected An 11-minute pursuit ensued and eventually ended when the truck crashed in the 1000 block of County Line Road. According to the DMPD, the driver, 18-year-old Brayan Lopez, was taken into custody at the scene, but his passenger fled on foot. Officers located the passenger, identified as a 15-year-old, in the AH Blank Golf Course and took the teen into custody. According to the DMPD, Lopez was wanted for his alleged role in a December 2024 robbery on the city's eastside. Police said Lopez, who was armed with a rifle, and two other people entered an occupied residence and robbed those inside, taking their handguns and shoes. Police were also searching for Lopez in connection to the February shooting death of Armando Cruz Lorenzo. The DMPD said Lopez knew Cruz Lorenzo, and it's believed that Lopez may have information regarding his death. No charges or arrests have been made in connection to Cruz Lorenzo's death. Lopez is facing charges of first-degree theft, eluding, interference with official acts, and first-degree robbery. The 15-year-old has been referred to juvenile court for a charge of interference with official acts.
