Niecy Nash-Betts gets candid on Hollywood sex scenes at 55: ‘It's stressful'
The claws are coming out for Niecy Nash-Betts. The actress, 55, opened up about sex scenes in the entertainment industry, while talking with Helen Mirren, Kathy Bates, Parker Posey, Keri Russell and Cristin Milioti during the Hollywood Reporter's Drama Actress Roundtable. 'Well, I was never the ingénue,' Nash-Betts told the ladies about past roles. 'Then, when I turned 45, it was like, 'And now we want you to be naked.' You waited until now? I was fine to play the part, but the days that you have to film intimate scenes, it's stressful. And I think it's men who do these call sheets because they put them at night. They think it's sexy. No.' 6 Helen Mirren, Kathy Bates, Niecy Nash-Betts, Parker Posey, Keri Russell and Cristin Milioti. Beau Grealy for 'The Hollywood Reporter' When it comes to intimate scenes on camera, the 'The Rookie: Feds' actress knows exactly what time of day works. 'Let's do it first thing in the morning, when this man just got out the tub and he's not smelling like a field mouse,' Nash-Betts explained. 'You go through all the heart palpitations, the closed set. 'Was my side meat a little too jiggly? Are my kibbles and bits covered?' And then they don't use it! I put myself out there to be that vulnerable, literally exposed, and you don't use it? Now I got an attitude. Stuff it back in there somewhere!' Milioti, 39, couldn't agree more. 6 The Hollywood Reporter sit down. Beau Grealy @beaugrealy 'I can get a little myopic about it,' the 'Black Mirror' star stated. 'I get defensive of the character, and I'm like, 'Why did they cut that thing that she says that explains this, this and this?' I forget to zoom out and think about the story as a larger piece. Much later, I can get why something was cut, but in the moment.' The powerhouse group also discussed being typecasted in Hollywood, with Nash-Betts revealing she feels she's had a variety of different roles throughout her career. She noted, 'I've lived a lot of lives as an actor — doing something as loud as 'Reno 911!,' and then you slide all the way over and that pendulum hits 'Jeffrey Dahmer.' I don't know what it would say [today] because it depends on which version of me they're looking for.' 6 Niecy Nash in 'Claws.' ©TNT/Courtesy Everett Collection / Everett Collection Although she's unsure of what version of herself she's looking to pull out now, Nash-Betts did add, 'I love that I can make people laugh and cry. I do not take it lightly.' Despite having a roster of variety, the 'Claws' star recalled one moment in particular that didn't sit well with her. 'I had it right to my face,' she said. 'I auditioned for something early in my career, and the two producers looked at each other and said, 'She's got a cute face. You think she can lose weight?' And I was like, 'Guys, she can hear you. She is here. And, no, she can't. Now are y'all going to give me the job?'' 6 Niecy Nash in 'Reno 911!' ©Comedy Central/Courtesy Everett Collect / Everett Collection Nash-Betts got the part, but as she remembered, 'I don't even know if I was the best one, but they probably felt so embarrassed.' After Mirren, 79, asked if she lost weight for the role, the 'American Horror Story' vet responded, 'No. I went home and ate a cookie.' Elsewhere in the sit-down, the 'Reno 911!' alum also got candid on her current romance. Nash-Betts was previously married to Don Nash from 1994 to 2007, before remarrying in 2011 to Jay Tucker. 6 Niecy Nash at the Disney 2025 Upfront. The pair split in 2020, and she went on to tie the knot with Jessica Betts that same year. Now, Nash-Betts is happier than ever – despite being told the union could derail her career opportunities. 'Everybody has an opinion! There were people who were like, 'Your fan base has known you to be a certain way, and you need to stay right there. Otherwise, you'll never eat lunch in this town again,'' she admitted. 'Some of that comes from older generations, family members, and that's how they think. But I've always been a person who does one thing: what I want to do.' 6 Niecy Nash hosting 'Clean House.' Style Network/Courtesy Everett Collectio / Everett Collection Looking back, Nash-Betts knows she made the right choice, sharing how the singer, 42, has been a constant support system for her over the past five years. 'And I'm going to do it all the way. I give very little thought, if any, to what somebody else thinks about it. I cannot even imagine my life without Jessica,' she expressed. 'This is the greatest love of my entire life. I would not even be able to enjoy my work as much as I do without that kind of support. So I did what I wanted to do. I don't regret it. I would do it again. As a matter of fact, we are about to celebrate five years.' Now, the wives are ready to celebrate their love story once more in honor of the five year mark. 'We're about to do another vow renewal,' Nash-Bettes told the table, 'a big party, just so I can say 'In your face' to whoever told me not to get married.'

Keri Russell creates magic on ordinary days. But that doesn't mean she's too tethered to the job title actress. In fact, Russell, 49, recently revealed how she views her career in Hollywood. 'I didn't grow up desperate to be an actress,' the star said while at the Hollywood Reporter's Drama Actress Roundtable. 'I'm still not sure I want to be. But I really love my job right now. There are a lot of things that are still embarrassing to me. I'm not a performer at ease.' I haven't done a German or Russian accent in a while and I just want to try it out,'' she revealed. 'That's my nightmare! I would f–king die. I don't want to f–king do that in front of strangers! For me, there's a real push-pull. I still have to overcome the obstacle of being nervous, but this version of TV that we're in works for me.' When the series wrapped, Russell left Los Angeles for New York and never moved back. 'I like my regular life,' she confessed at the roundtable. 'It's always such a funny thing when you see any big, super famous movie star. We've all worked with those people. I think [about how] they can't even go outside. They don't know what it's like to be a real person. They don't get their own coffee. They don't do their own laundry.' 'How do they play a real person? I don't want to talk shit too much about acting. I am completely married to the adventure of it, and that's what I'm in it for,' Russell added. Niecy Nash-Betts & Kathy Bates Just Bonded Over the Worst Career Advice They've Ever Received
While we'd all love to only give and receive great advice, we can all probably think of a couple of times when advice from a friend, family member, or even mentor just didn't land. For Niecy Nash-Betts and Kathy Bates, who recently joined The Hollywood Reporter's Drama Actress Roundtable, remembering the worst advice they've ever received was pretty easy, partly because of how bad they were. More from SheKnows The Best Bras for Your Teen - & How to Shop Together Without Dying of Embarrassment To Nash-Betts, who won her first Emmy Award in 2024 for her role in Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, she talked about how she was once told not to marry her wife, Jessica Betts, in 2020. 'Everybody has an opinion!' Nash-Betts said. 'There were people who were like, 'Your fan base has known you to be a certain way, and you need to stay right there. Otherwise, you'll never eat lunch in this town again.' Some of that comes from older generations, family members, and that's how they think.' 'But I've always been a person who does one thing: what I want to do,' she continued. 'And I'm going to do it all the way. I give very little thought, if any, to what somebody else thinks about it.' And, as fans of Nash-Betts know, she's still head over heels for her wife, and surely hasn't regretted the decision since. 'I cannot even imagine my life without Jessica,' she gushed. 'This is the greatest love of my entire life. I would not even be able to enjoy my work as much as I do without that kind of support. So I did what I wanted to do. I don't regret it. I would do it again. As a matter of fact, we are about to celebrate five years.' Nash-Betts then revealed that she and Jessica, who tied the knot in August 2020, are planning a 'big party' as a vow renewal. 'Just so I can say 'In your face' to whoever told me not to get married,' she said. For Bates, who's reaching new heights of TV critical acclaim recently for her role in Matlock, her worst advice was similar. According to her, she too was once told to keep an important part of her life a secret from the rest of the world. Sadly, she listened to it. 'I had ovarian cancer in 2003, and my agent said, 'Don't tell anybody. You don't want to be the poster child for ovarian cancer,'' she remembered. Looking back, she regrets keeping quiet. 'I think if I had come out at that point, maybe it would have helped some people,' Bates said. Years later, when she battled breast cancer in 2012, she didn't make the same mistake. 'I regret not doing that [the first time]. Because I went underground,' she said. 'I was on the board at the Academy, and I called them and said, 'I can't come to any of the meetings.' I just hid for a whole year. So it was bad advice, career and personal.' Whether they listened to the terrible advice or not, we hope the people who once said these things are listening and regretting ever giving their opinion. Helen Mirren tells five A-list actresses that ‘none of us are beautiful'
Helen Mirren is coming in with a hot take. While sitting down for The Hollywood Reporter's Drama Actress Roundtable, the star, 79, got a chance to speak with Kathy Bates, Niecy Nash-Betts, Parker Posey, Keri Russell and Cristin Milioti about the ups and downs of the entertainment industry. 'I was told to have a nose job in my 20s,' Mirren told her fellow actors. 'Someone said, 'You'll never get work if you don't have a nose job.' I said no. I didn't want to be a pretty actress anyway. I elected to be not so pretty.' Advertisement 8 Dame Helen Mirren, Kathy Bates, Niecy Nash-Betts, Parker Posey, Keri Russell and Cristin Milioti. Beau Grealy for 'The Hollywood Reporter' Nash-Betts, 55, replied, 'First of all, too late. Because you are. But I understand what you mean, in theory. I love being shiny in my real life. On camera, don't care. I want to look like a dog. It doesn't bother me to disappear in some of those roles.' The 'Claws' alum added, 'I feel sorry for people who have been beautiful their whole life. Because when that's what you're known for, you got to keep it up for your whole life? I don't know what I'd do.' Advertisement Bates, 76, who recently spoke out about how she once lost a starring role due to her looks, chimed in, 'I don't know if y'all have the same experience, but when you see an amazing performance, it doesn't matter what that person looks like — they're beautiful.' 8 Helen Mirren attends Lights On Women's Worth at Plage Des Palmes on May 24, 2024 in Cannes, France. 'I feel more beautiful than I have in my entire life.' Advertisement Mirren, however, decided to double down. 8 Helen Mirren in 'Prime Suspect.' Courtesy Everett Collection 'We're not. None of us are beauties,' she pressed. 'We all have really different faces, very interesting faces.' Russell, 49, came to the English actress's defense, telling the ladies, 'I know what you mean. Like model beautiful?' Advertisement Mirren expressed, 'We all know what 'beautiful' is like.' 8 Kathy Bates in 1990's 'Misery.' ©Columbia Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection Milioti, 39, reflected on her own experience with being a woman in Hollywood, sharing, 'If I look back 10 years, I was often playing a version of 'a girl of someone's dreams.' 'That didn't feel like my life experience, which is fine, but the older I get, the more I feel like I'm taking off a pair of tight pants. I feel so much freer. It's not a dig at any of those projects,' she continued. 'It's how you're perceived at 25. I was auditioning to play sorority girls or a dead body in a trunk or someone who was in love with a 40-year-old and being like, 'Have you ever tried dancing in the rain?' To leave that behind felt really good.' On the flip side, Milioti said, 'In the culture, there is such a celebration of men who really go for it.' 8 Keri Russell in 'Felicity.' ©Warner Bros/Courtesy Everett Collection 'They'll do a crazy thing, and everyone's like, 'Wow, he must take this so seriously.' I've witnessed some of that, mostly just heard about it, and have thought that if I ever did that, it would not end well. And that still happens.' 'Misogyny,' Posey, 56, simply stated. 'When you asked that question, I felt myself kind of deflate because I think the misogyny is so rampant. To be a dynamic character or a dynamic woman or even a dynamic person, it's kind of outrageous right now. There's something very provincial that's happened. I feel the need to be really entertaining and make people laugh.' Advertisement 'Beautiful, but she doesn't know it,' Mirren said about what was always written above character descriptions. 8 Niecy Nash in 'Reno 911.' ©Comedy Central/Courtesy Everett Collect / Everett Collection Bates has also seen that happen, recalling, 'I made the mistake of asking the casting guy, 'Why does everybody have to be beautiful?' And he said, 'If you want to go and make your own female version of 'Marty,' be my guest.' So I left. I was asking an honest question. It still makes me pissed.' 'Marty' was a 1995 romance/drama that followed the life of bachelor Marty Piletti. Advertisement 'This is something I can really believe in. It means something. Up until that point, things were starting to wind down for me. I was getting roles that I really cared about in films that no one would see. [There was] disappointment in the way things were edited,' Bates confessed. 'It started to hurt too much. I just thought that maybe I ought to think about putting my house on the market and moving to France or something. I just wanted some real stimulation.' 8 Cristin Milioti in 'How I Met Your Mother.' ©CBS/Courtesy Everett Collection Although Mirren might not consider herself beautiful, she doesn't want to slow down anytime soon, telling the outlet, 'I'm old. I didn't die young, and the reason that I want to live as long as I possibly can — and continue working as long as I possibly can — is exactly what Keri said. It's the adventure of it.' Just last month, the 'MobLand' vet shared her beauty advice with E! News, telling the outlet that aging is 'nature, it's what happens.' Advertisement 8 Parker Posey. (c)First Look Pictures/courtesy Everett Collection 'All I can say is,' she quipped, 'don't worry [about aging]. It's cool.' 'My mother said the greatest thing to me: 'Never be afraid of getting older,'' reminisced Mirren. 'Of course, when you're 18, middle age is like a foreign country. It's so far away from you. But, you know, when you arrive in that country, you realize that country has great things. Maybe you like that country better than the country you left behind.'
