The trophy, which is named after famed defender Bronco Nagurski, is given out to the national defensive player of the year. Fighting Irish linebacker Drayk Bowen is on the list alongside Irish cornerback Leonard Moore. The last Notre Dame player to win the award is safety Xavier Watts. Watts, who took home the award in 2023, is now with the NFL's Atlanta Falcons. The Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) puts together the list, and players can be added or removed each week. The FWAA will name a defensive player of the week each week, and four finalists for the yearly award will be announced in mid-to-late November. Notre Dame has 3 of the most valuable returning players according to Pro Football Focus
It's safe to say that Notre Dame football has plenty of star power entering the 2025 campaign, and Pro Football Focus backed that up on Wednesday. PFF released its most valuable returning players list, and three Irish players made the cut. Only one on offense, and it's not at all a surprising pick as running back Jeremiyah Love was named as the top returning player at his position. The junior is coming off a massive season, where he ran for 1,125 yards with 17 touchdowns while having 237 receiving yards and another two scores. Defensively, Notre Dame placed two on the list, linebacker Drayk Bowen and cornerback Leonard Moore. Bowen had his coming out party last season, with 78 tackles, a sack and three forced fumbles. The former 4-star prospect has lived up to his billing, and could be even better this fall after opting to hang up his glove and bat and focus solely on football. As for Moore, a highly decorated first year on campus has led many to believe that he's the next top prospect out of Notre Dame's secondary, following a very impressive lineage of players. Last fall he had 34 tackles, 2 interceptions, and forced two fumbles. The trio make up the core of a team that many expect to make a return trip to the College Football Playoff. It's a stacked roster that should return dividends early and often for Irish fans this fall. NFL Draft Summer Scouting Report: Drayk Bowen, LB, Notre Dame
Summer is here, and it is everyone's favorite time of the year, scouting time. Every year, we do Summer Scouting to preview college football for Vikings fans, but also give them an idea of names to follow and watch in the fall as needs pop up for Minnesota. Are we going to write about quarterbacks? You know it, but why? Because other NFL teams will draft them, just as they will draft every other position. It all matters whether these players end up on the Vikings, the Bears, or the Steelers. We write these so Vikings fans can be the most informed fans. So if you are still with us, enjoy our latest Summer Scouting report as we prepare you for the Fall. Player Information Player: Drayk Bowen School: Notre Dame Height/Weight: 6-2/239 lbs. Player Background - 4-Star Recruit - 8th Best Baseball Prospect in High School in 2022 - Played Linebacker and Running Back in High School - Butkus Award Winner in High School (Best H.S. LB) - Gatorade Player of the Year in Indiana Career Stats Heading into the 2025 Season - 92 Tackles - 5 Tackles for a Loss - 1 Sack - 2 Pass Breakups - 4 Forced Fumbles Notable PFF Numbers Heading into the 2025 Season - 79.1 PFF Run Defense Grade - 68.8 PFF Coverage Grade - Missed Tackle Rate of 6% - 32 Defensive Stops Player Traits - Physical tackler, looks to set the tone with each hit - Relentless energy and pursuit ability on extended plays - Rangy in both the run and pass game - Dynamic athlete to be able to play in a variety of roles - Good awareness and tacking of ball carriers Player Summary A dynamic athlete, Drayk Bowen has the background you expect from a guy who plays the linebacker position the way he does. He is rangy and efficient in covering ground in defending the run and pass. Bowen looks to leave a mark every time he hits a ball carrier, and it results in the ball coming out at times; other times, it leaves the offense questioning if they want to cross his path again. He needs to work on some technique things, but the base he has as a linebacker has me thinking he could be a mid-round pick as is, but could climb up the board with a strong season in 2025.

Two Notre Dame football stars, Drayk Bowen and Jaiden Ausberry, host a youth camp
Notre Dame football's family is all about the community, and over the weekend linebacker's Drayk Bowen and Jaiden Ausberry did exactly that. The pair hosted the inaugural Jr. Irish Football Camp in Butler, Indiana, giving some of the local youth some high-level instruction as reported by WANE15's Josh Ayen. It comes after star running back Jeremiyah Love did the same for the South Bend community. Advertisement It's pretty great to see the current players using their platform to show that they aren't just making plays on Saturday, but that they genuinely care about the next wave of college football stars. Notre Dame continues to show that they not only recruit great players, but great young men as well. They all understand what Irish football means to the state, and while they are just about to start fall camp, they still have enough time to host an event like this. While this was the first one, hopefully this is the beginning of an annual tradition where Bowen and Ausberry are giving back to the kids.
