Rockford IceHogs sweep the Chicago Wolves behind a Drew Commesso shutout

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — The Rockford IceHogs have disposed of the Chicago Wolves, and they're headed to next round of the Calder Cup Playoffs. They pulled off a two-game sweep of the Wolves by dominating their game 5-0 Friday night at BMO IceHogs were sharp in all aspects from start to finish in this game. You have to begin with the play of goaltender Drew Commesso. He earned the shutout by coming up with 34 saves including several spectacular ones in the second period. He and the IceHogs also got through a 4-minute penalty kill unscathed in the first period. Commesso allowed only one goal in the entire two-game Anderson ignited the IceHogs offense less than two minutes into the game. He scored in front of the net at the 1:56 mark. Kevin Korchinski added another goal in the first period putting the Hogs up 2-0 at the first the second period, Gerry Mayhew put on a rush getting a stride ahead of the Wolves' defense to score past Wolves goaltender Spencer Martin for a 3-0 lead. Mayhew scored on another breakaway in the third period. Aku Raty completed the scoring with an empty net up for the IceHogs, a best-of-five Central Division Semifinal Series against the Central Division Champion Milwaukee Admirals. ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — A pivotal weekend for the IceHogs could not have gone more wrong. They went into it hoping to potentially clinch a playoff berth and catch up to the Grand Rapids Griffins for the fourth spot in the Central Division, instead they gave up a barrage of goals and dropped a pair of games to the lost Friday night in Grand Rapids 8-3. Saturday night at BMO Center they lost 7-5 to the Griffins. In Saturday's game, they watched the Griffins jump out to a 3-1 lead after two periods. The third period was a flurry of goals as both teams put the puck in the net four times each. Drew Commesso was in goal for the IceHogs. He surrendered six of the Griffins' goals. On the bright side for the IceHogs, Zac Sanford had a hat trick. Jalen Luypen and Gavin Hayes scored the other two IceHogs' goals. The IceHogs' magic number for clinching a playoff spot remains at five as they try to hold off the sixth -place Iowa Wild who are eight standing points behind the IceHogs. The IceHogs are eight points behind the fourth-place Chicago Wolves and ten points behind now third-place Grand coming week, the IceHogs have a pair of home games Friday night and Saturday night, both against the Tucson Roadrunners.
