Mystery over iconic Glasgow pub as punters fear it has closed for good after decades
One of the city's nightlife moguls spoke about the issue BAR GONE? Mystery over iconic Glasgow pub as punters fear it has closed for good after decades Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A FAMOUS Glasgow bar is at the centre of a mystery as punters fear it has closed for good. Driftwood has been serving drinks at the end of Sauchiehall Street for nearly thirty years. The biggest clue came after Driftwood disappeared from social media. All of the bar's pages have been deleted from Facebook and Instagram. When our reporter went to the bar today, despite a sign on the door saying they would be open from 5pm until midnight, the pub appeared shut. It had a bike lock attached to door handles and there was no sign of life inside the venue. Speculation quickly spread about the bar's future. One person posted on a Facebook page for Glasgow bartenders: "What happened to Driftwood? Appears to be shut down." And Glasgow nightlife mogul Donald MacLeod, who owns the popular Cathouse and Garage nightclubs, also posted to his X account about the rumoured closure. He said: "This is desperately sad news. "I'm gutted for my friend and owner Dario, Nicola and their team, who for 28 years worked tirelessly to put this corner of Sauchiehall St and Charing Cross on the map and turn it into an iconic Glasgow Institution, only to see it torn away from them in the blink of an eye." 'One of my favourite pubs' cry locals as popular bar closes doors permanently after 40 years in business in 'end of era' And a post on the Cathouse's Facebook page read: "We are living in the decline of bars and venues and it never gets any easier seeing places disappear. "Our hearts go out to the staff who have been made redundant, and the customers that frequented over their 28 year reign in Glasgow." It comes as bars and restaurants across the country have been struggling. Owners have been hammered by rising costs in the aftermath of the pandemic, when lockdowns decimated their trade. Punters have also been forced to save their cash amid the cost of living crisis, which has seen hospitality footfall plummet. Businesses have also been paying more after National Insurance hikes brought in by the UK Government. The Scottish Government and council officials have also come under fire as bar and restaurant bosses accused them of failing to support Scotland's struggling hospitality sector. It comes as we told how another Sauchiehall Street venue closed down for good. Popular nightclub Mango has been forced to permanently close their doors. The owners of the three-level venue announced it has shut down due to the lease expiring this month. They hosted a "final farewell" party on Saturday, May 17.

Is Driftwood bar in Glasgow city centre shut for good?
Driftwood, a Sauchiehall Street institution since the late 1990s, has long been a fixture of Glasgow's nightlife. However, loyal customers have been left reeling after learning that the popular pub has reportedly shut down for good. Adding to the uncertainty, all of Driftwood's social media accounts appear to have been deleted, leaving regulars searching for answers. When the Glasgow Times searched for the social media channels, we were met with a message which stated that the page cannot be found. (Image: Newsquest) (Image: Newsquest) (Image: Newsquest) READ MORE: Prices for alcoholic drinks at TRNSMT 2025 have been revealed Known for its quirky concoctions and themed events, Driftwood earned a cult following for its Buckfast jelly bombs, Disney-inspired cocktails, and its infamous pie and bean pizzas. The venue was equally known for its buzzing atmosphere and loyal clientele. Social media has since been flooded with tributes and expressions of sadness from fans and former staff. Donald McLeod, owner of Glasgow venues Cathouse and The Garage, shared his disappointment online: 'This is desperately sad news. "I'm gutted for my friend and owner Dario, Nicola, and their team, who have worked tirelessly for 28 years to make this corner of Sauchiehall Street an iconic Glasgow institution—only to see it torn away from them in the blink of an eye.' Cathouse's official social media added: 'They said only two things would survive a nuclear attack—cockroaches and Driftwood. "We are living in the decline of bars and venues, and it never gets any easier seeing places disappear. "Our hearts go out to the staff who have been made redundant and the customers who frequented Driftwood during its 28-year reign in Glasgow.' Former staff have also shared their memories. One wrote on Facebook: 'I'm gutted to hear about this. "I worked there when it was Los Borrachos, from October 1999 to February 2001—my first bar job. I was there for a year and a half. Lots of memories.' The Glasgow Bartenders Club questioned the reasons behind the closure, while videos mourning the pub's potential end have been circulating widely on TikTok. One emotional clip read: 'Wasn't going to drink tonight, but Driftwood in Glasgow is closed and might not reopen, and their accounts are gone. My heart is broken.' Another simply asked: 'What do I do now that Driftwood is closed forever?' There was no sign on the door to indicate a closure, but the bar wasn't open (Image: Newsquest) The Glasgow Times visited the premises of Driftwood, and it appears closed with no signs indicating if it has shut for good or when it will be opening once again. As of now, no official statement has been released by the bar's owners, but with its digital presence wiped and industry insiders mourning its loss, the future of Driftwood remains uncertain. The Glasgow Times has approached Driftwood for comment.

Luxury and lifestyle hospitality: Why investors are checking in
In a climate defined by volatility across commercial real estate, the hospitality sector, especially in luxury, upper-upscale and lifestyle segments, is emerging as a resilient and strategic investment choice. Miami-based Driftwood Capital, with its vertically integrated model and dedicated Driftwood Lifestyle & Luxury (DLLX) division, is uniquely positioned to capitalize on macroeconomic shifts, evolving demographic preferences and experiential travel demand. Macro resilience meets micro precision Despite persistent headwinds like elevated interest rates and global uncertainty, hospitality investment, particularly in premium segments, continues to exhibit robust performance. Recent data from STR and Tourism Economics forecasts RevPAR (revenue per available room) growth between 3% and 3.7% year-over-year through 2025 for upper-upscale and luxury hotels, surpassing other hotel classes. CoStar's Q1 2025 analysis further confirms the trend, indicating demand growth in luxury hotels exceeding midscale assets by 50-100 basis points. These figures underscore a distinct market bifurcation and highlight why astute investors are targeting premium hospitality. Introducing DLLX: Built for the next generation of travel Recognizing the structural evolution of hospitality, Driftwood recently launched DLLX, a division explicitly designed to harness opportunities in luxury hotels, lifestyle-driven assets and branded residences. Under the leadership of Alinio Azevedo, former CEO of Aspen Hospitality, DLLX targets more than $3 billion in deployments across carefully selected, high-growth domestic and international markets. This strategic initiative aligns with a global surge in high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth travelers seeking curated experiences and branded assurance. DLLX's differentiation lies in its integration with Driftwood Hospitality Management (DHM), which currently operates over 80 properties nationwide. This close partnership ensures end-to-end operational excellence from asset acquisition to ongoing management, driving investor returns through operational efficiency and data-driven insights. Case studies: Strategic execution from the Space Coast to Miami Two marquee projects illustrate Driftwood's strategic precision and innovative execution: Westin Cocoa Beach Resort, Spa, and Conference Center: A 502-room beachfront development on Florida's thriving Space Coast. Once complete, Driftwood will control approximately 62% of the beachfront inventory in a region anticipated to benefit from more than 300 annual rocket launches by 2028. Early identification of this market opportunity positions Driftwood for sustained, demand-driven outperformance. Dream Riverside Wharf, Miami: A Hyatt-branded lifestyle property situated on Miami's revitalized riverfront, featuring 165 keys and curated experiential amenities. Positioned in an Opportunity Zone and EB-5 eligible region, this project exemplifies how strategic site selection, demographic appeal and capital structure ingenuity, converge to create multi-dimensional investor benefits. Vertical integration: Driftwood's structural edge Driftwood Capital's unique advantage resides in its comprehensive control over the investment lifecycle — from origination, underwriting, and development to long-term operational management. Leveraging its proprietary Domino technology platform, Driftwood centralizes real-time operational data, enhancing decision-making agility and transparency. This structural integration optimizes cost efficiencies, execution velocity and capital deployment precision, providing investors with institutional-quality access to premium hospitality investments. Investable, experiential, integrated: Hospitality's new paradigm Today's hospitality investment is more than a traditional real estate play. Instead, it's a bet on evolving consumer behaviors and demographic trends. Branded residences, for example, achieve consistent premiums exceeding 30% over non-branded counterparts, reflecting an ongoing shift toward curated lifestyle experiences and brand assurances. With over $5 billion in historical transactions and a robust institutional syndication network, Driftwood Capital and its DLLX division are positioned to lead this new hospitality paradigm. For investors seeking durable yields, capital preservation and strategic upside in an inflation-resilient asset class, DLLX offers more than just thematic appeal.
