James May and Richard Hammond Are Just Doing Top Gear Stuff Now

Humans are creatures of habit, and change is hard, so we shouldn't be surprised to see James May and Richard Hammond doing what they do best—stupid stuff with cars. In a new DriveTribe YouTube video, the pair recreate and relive their glory days of Top Gear with a classically ridiculous race between a car and a plane. The two are racing from Henstridge Airfield to the old Top Gear test track at the Dunsfold Aerodrome—a short jaunt that should take both hosts about two hours to complete. Hammond is behind the wheel of a Porsche Taycan Turbo GT , while May rides shotgun in a Pipistrel electric airplane. The Taycan can make up to 1,092 horsepower for two seconds with launch control. Normally, it makes 777 hp and 988 pound-feet of torque. It can also hit a maximum speed of 190 miles per hour with the Weissach package. But Hammond never got close to reaching that on this adventure, thanks to busy UK B-roads. A plane should be faster than a car, but the Pipistrel had a limited range that required May to land and charge the battery, which was enough of a delay to allow Hammond to win in the Porsche . May might have also gotten a bit too cocky during lunch, but the result is an entertaining reminder that when these two get together, we'll happily watch and enjoy the antics like we always have. Richard Hammond's Daughter Dents Her First Performance Car Immediately

Read the full story on Backfire News When you're the daughter of a famous automotive show host, you can't just buy any old ride. That's why Izzy, Richard Hammond's child, opted for a new Mercedes-AMG A35. Before you snort about how the little hatchback must be the perfect choice for a kid, just know this thing is notorious for kicking like a right, the A35 might have a little four-banger engine, but thanks to turbocharging and AMG wizardry, it pulses with a mighty 302-horsepower plus 295 lb.-ft. of torque on tap. That's plenty to get it moving at a neck-snapping pace. In other words, we can't really blame Izzy. After all, who in their right mind allows their child to buy such a beast? She showed off her newly acquired ride for a DriveTribe video, explaining why she chose it over a BMW M2. While you might not agree with her reasoning, she did some real thinking and tried out both cars before settling on the Mercedes. While taking the A35 through some tight turns on a rural UK road, she hugged the shoulder a little too tightly as a fender-mounted camera hit a clump of grass, pushing it to a weird angle. She laughs it off and so does the guy riding shotgun. However, when they arrive back to where the film crew is staged and they remove the GoPro's suction mount, they discover a small dent in the sheet metal. So in perhaps the weirdest, most unexpected way she already damaged her new ride. Of course, Richard Hammond was famous on Top Gear for wrecking cars. He even had a brush with death while testing out the Rimac Concept One all-electric hypercar, the $1 million EV going up in flames afterward. Before the incident, Izzy disclosed not only does she want to wrap the A35, she wants to dial up performance so the little 2.0-liter engine is making 500-hp. That's insane, but she is after all a chip off the old block. Images via DriveTribe/YouTube
