F1 star overshadowed by Max Verstappen did something not seen in six years
The controversy created by Max Verstappen when he slammed into George Russell late in the Spanish Grand Prix overshadowed an extraordinary achievement by Nico Hulkenberg Max Verstappen was named Driver of the Day by Formula 1 fans at the Spanish Grand Prix – though the outcome of that poll may have been very different if only the votes cast after the Dutchman slammed into George Russell, seemingly on purpose, counted. And, in any case, the final classification makes it clear that one driver's extraordinary performance and result was unfairly overlooked. Because in fifth place – nosebleed territory for a Sauber team which has struggled to make an impression in recent years – was Nico Hulkenberg. He finished sixth on the road but, because Verstappen dropped down to 10th because of a penalty for his moment of madness, was promoted to fifth place. The last time the German finished a race that high, the year was 2019 and he was driving for Renault at the Italian Grand Prix. It was also a landmark moment for the team, who haven't had anyone finish that high in a race since the 2022 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, when Valtteri Bottas managed it. The 10 points Hulkenberg scored on Sunday lifted Sauber off the foot of the constructors' standings to eighth place, level with Aston Martin. And Hulkenberg managed it despite an unspectacular qualifying result which meant he started 15th on the grid. But he got off to a stunning start by rising five positions on the opening lap, which put him in points contention. He had been one of a few drivers who saved an extra set of soft compound tyres for the race, compromising his qualifying efforts as a result. But the gamble paid off as a late safety car gave him the opportunity to put on a new set of softs for the six-lap sprint to the chequered flag. READ MORE: Max Verstappen is extraordinary and infuriating in equal measure – we've seen this before Hulkenberg said: "It was one of those Sundays where everything came together really well. Right from the beginning, we were in the mix – a strong start, a clean first lap, and we were immediately able to fight for points. "Ironically, not having the best Saturday and saving a set of softs gave us a strategic edge with the tyre allocation. The safety car mixed things up a bit, and having those fresh compounds turned out to be a golden ticket. There was a significant delta between used and new tyres today, so that really paid off." Rookie team-mate Gabriel Bortoleto did not score points but looked strong, qualifying 12th in an upgraded Sauber C45. The team introduced a raft of upgrades in Barcelona which, based on the evidence they collected during the race, look to have given them a more competitive race car. Hulkenberg added: "The car felt good all weekend, and the updates clearly gave us a step forward in performance. We had strong pace throughout the race. Credits to the whole team, both at the factory and trackside, for the hard work on the upgrades."

Dan Ticktum on the wait before his first podium: 'It's been pretty depressing few years'
Image credit: Dan Ticktum/Instagram The success may have come late, but when it did, it tasted all the sweeter for Cupra Kiro driver Dan Ticktum. The 25-year-old from London, finally secured a place on the Formula E podium at the Tokyo E-Prix Round 9 on Sunday, finishing third in the race. It took Ticktum 57 starts and two previous top-five finishes to finally clinch a podium finish. Reflecting on the achievement, he acknowledged the tough journey that preceded it. Dan Ticktum is happy after his podium finish in Tokyo "It's been a pretty depressing few years I have to say up until this point," said Dan Ticktum. "In the last few races, we've sort of managed to get things in the window far more consistently which has given us a lot more confidence. We've still got a lot of people who were there when I first joined and I'm just really happy to reward them with something like this, to be the guy to do that for them is great," he added. The podium finish was not just a personal milestone for Ticktum but also a significant moment for his team, Kiro Race Co, who are gradually making their mark in the Formula E paddock. "I also appreciate everyone's support for voting me [PIF] Driver of the Day and all that kind of stuff — seems like not everyone hates me," he added. "I'm happy. I feel like this year, like the team and the championship — you know, the CEO Jeff (Dodds) and a few other people — are supporting my character a bit more and I'm just enjoying it a lot more, not only just the results are coming. The team understands me as a character and I have my rough edges here. I'm happy being me and if that isn't employable for other people then so be it." What's next in Formula E? Formula E now shifts to Shanghai, with the next rounds scheduled for Saturday, May 31, and Sunday, June 1, 2025. Lewis Hamilton Fans Accuse FIA of Costing Ferrari Star a Podium in Imola
Lewis Hamilton enjoyed his best outing in a Ferrari uniform since joining the Italian outfit at the start of the year, in front of his home fans at Sunday's Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix. While his arch-rival Max Verstappen claimed victory, the Briton stole the spotlight and was named Driver of the Day. Advertisement The former Mercedes driver started 12th after a poor qualifying on Saturday. But, with a good combination of race pace and strategy calls by the Ferrari think-tank, he was able to climb his way up to 4th position in the race. However, it wasn't without controversy. Lewis Hamilton during the F1 Chinese Grand Prix at Shanghai International Nakamura/Reuters via Imagn Images On lap 30th, Esteban Ocon stopped his car on the side of the track. This led to the deployment of the Virtual Safety Car (VSC) by the stewards in Imola. The race marshals first tried to remove the Haas driver's car by the use of a recovery vehicle. But when it failed, the marshals directly moved the car off the track. This frustrated Hamilton, who voiced his frustrations over the radio for apparently wasting laps. Advertisement His fans shared the same sentiment, who also felt the Briton could have challenged McLaren's Oscar Piastri for 3rd place if the race had a few more laps left. They took to social media to vent their anger at the FIA. One user commented, "Deliberate waste of time with safety car." Another user said, "If the safety car didn't do so many useless laps, LH44 would have probably finished 3rd." While a third one added, "Telling Lewis Hamilton to not question safety car protocol is a joke." The FIA's tryst with Hamilton never ceases to provide drama. Piastri wins Chinese Grand Prix as Norris survives brake scare for McLaren one-two finish
Winner Team McLaren-Mercedes' Oscar Piastri celebrates on the podium with the trophy after the Hungarian Grand Prix win in Budapest. PHOTO: AFP Oscar Piastri secured a commanding victory at the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix on Sunday, leading a McLaren 1-2 finish as teammate Lando Norris held off late pressure despite severe brake problems. The win at the Shanghai International Circuit marked a major milestone for Piastri, who described the result as a 'mega, mega job.' Piastri maintained strong pace throughout the race, gradually building a gap from Norris, whose car developed critical brake issues in the closing laps. Norris, told by his race engineer to avoid unnecessary risks, managed to nurse the car home just 1.3 seconds ahead of Mercedes driver George Russell, who took third. Red Bull's Max Verstappen placed fourth, followed by Ferrari's Charles Leclerc in fifth and Lewis Hamilton in sixth. The race featured early drama when Leclerc and Hamilton collided, forcing both to recover through the field. Esteban Ocon finished seventh, followed by Andrea Kimi Antonelli in eighth, Alex Albon in ninth, and Oliver Bearman in tenth. Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso was the only retirement. Antonelli was surprisingly named Driver of the Day, despite finishing behind a Haas and five places behind his teammate—a decision that raised eyebrows among fans and commentators alike. McLaren's strong showing narrowed the championship gap, with Piastri now emerging as a serious contender. The Australian's composure and pace were key, especially as Norris struggled to control a braking issue in the final laps. With this win, Piastri has thrown his name into serious championship contention as the 2025 Formula One season heats up.
