BorgWarner secures electric cross differential project in China

BorgWarner has announced a new programme for its electric cross differential (eXD) technology with a Chinese original equipment manufacturer (OEM) for use in electric vehicles . The company said in a statement that the development aligns with the transition of traditional powertrain technologies towards electrification to address rising performance and safety requirements. The eXD system dynamically controls power distribution between wheels to improve handling and traction. Isabelle McKenzie, Vice President of BorgWarner Inc. and President and General Manager of Drivetrain and Morse Systems, said, 'BorgWarner's eXD technology improves handling and vehicle stability in various driving conditions. The technology has proven effective in combustion vehicles, and we are now expanding its application to electric vehicles to elevate the driving experience for electric vehicle users.' Application in different driving conditions The eXD adjusts slip control in real time based on driving conditions and vehicle status. The system enhances stability during high-speed driving, rapid acceleration, and sharp turns. According to BorgWarner, the eXD also adapts across different friction levels. On dry roads, it transfers more power to the outer wheels for cornering. In conditions such as ice, snow, or mud, it identifies reduced friction and limits power to slipping wheels, reallocating drive force to wheels with better traction.

McKenzie and her co-honorees are featured in the May 19 issue and were celebrated at a gala at The Henry in Dearborn, Mich., hosted by Automotive News. 100 Leading Women in the North American Auto Industry recognizes female leaders in the automotive field – those who make major decisions and have significant influence at their companies. Automotive News has published the list of the industry's top female executives every five years since 2000. This sixth list includes engineers, mobility leaders, manufacturing and marketing executives, financiers, dealer principals and designers. Before taking on her current role in July 2024 leading the global Drivetrain and Morse Systems business, McKenzie was the Vice President and President and General Manager of BorgWarner Morse Systems. Since joining BorgWarner in 2014, McKenzie has held several Vice President and General Manager roles. She has worked in the automotive industry for over 30 years in France and the United States for Siemens Automotive, Continental and BorgWarner. BorgWarner expands dual-clutch programmes in China

BorgWarner has announced two new contracts, reinforcing its presence in China's dual-clutch transmission (DCT) market. The company has secured a seven-year extension for its DCT clutch assembly with a German automotive manufacturer operating in China. This follows more than ten years of collaboration between the two companies. The components, produced at BorgWarner's facility in Tianjin, are used in vehicles with internal combustion engines and mild hybrid systems. The design offers improved performance through reduced rotational inertia and lower friction losses, contributing to greater transmission efficiency and smoother operation. BorgWarner vice president and Drivetrain and Morse Systems president and general manager Isabelle McKenzie said: 'Our success in securing new projects in the Chinese market underscores BorgWarner's commitment to delivering innovative solutions in the region. We are dedicated to helping our customers grow their business in China and succeed in international markets.' In addition to the contract extension, BorgWarner has entered into a new supply agreement with a Chinese transmission manufacturer. Under the deal, BorgWarner will provide DCT clutch modules for a Chinese automaker's SUVs and sedans destined for domestic and export markets. Production will take place at the company's Taicang facility, with mass production expected to begin by the end of 2025. The modules are designed to meet varied driving conditions and are noted for their compact design, thermal durability, and cost efficiency. Earlier this year, in February, BorgWarner also announced extended supply contracts with a major North American automaker for wastegate turbochargers. BorgWarner vice-president and turbos and thermal technologies president and general manager Volker Weng said: 'BorgWarner has a longstanding and trusted relationship with this OEM, having supplied them with our turbochargers for more than 10 years. 'These platform extensions are a testament to the strong collaboration between our engineering teams and we look forward to continuing our work together through the rest of this decade and beyond.'
