Tipperary SHC: Loughmore pull off dramatic victory, Nenagh beat Thurles
Loughmore-Castleiney came up with the most unlikely of match-winners as goalkeeper Aidan McGrath landed a last-puck point to begin their Tipperary SHC title defence with a victory. The dual champions led neighbours Drom & Inch all the way until the 63rd minute, when Séamus Callanan won and buried a 21-yard free to the net. John McGrath already had 2-10 to his name, but he turned down a shot from the final free on his own 45 to tap it back to his cousin Aidan. The forward-turned-keeper took it on from all of 100 metres to split the posts for a 2-18 to 1-20 triumph at Templemore. The 34-year-old was already in line for praise, having produced vital saves from Kevin Hassett and Lorcan Campion at the end of either half. Loughmore commenced with seven of the opening eight points, although Callanan's frees would keep Drom in touch. However, John McGrath netted shortly before and after the break. First, he exchanged a one-two with another first cousin, Liam, for a 1-9 to 0-8 half-time lead. Then, he was quickest to react when Liam's shot hit the post to flick home. Callanan ended with 1-10, but Drom must bounce back fast ahead of games against JK Brackens and Lorrha in Group 3. Toomevara and Thurles Sarsfields must also dust themselves down after opening defeats. Last year's runners-up, Toome, are in a particularly tricky situation in Group 1 alongside Kiladangan and Clonoulty-Rossmore. They fell by 2-25 to 0-28 against a Holycross-Ballycahill side without their captain, Bryan O'Mara. Eoin Craddock won an early penalty, which Joe Caesar crashed home for a 1-2 head start. Craddock, Mikey Nally, Darragh Woods, and Robbie Ryan pressed home their advantage for a 1-15 to 0-10 half-time cushion. Holycross's lead maxed out at nine points after David Fogarty's 36th-minute goal. Darragh McCarthy finished with 0-16, although the first 15 came from frees in an entertaining battle with fellow teenager Cathal O'Reilly. Toome finally got motoring with points from substitutes Adam Hall, Mark McCarthy, and Conor O'Meara (0-3), who was sent off in a frantic stoppage-time finale. Meanwhile, bookies' favourites Thurles Sarsfields suffered a 1-26 to 3-15 defeat against Nenagh Éire Óg at The Ragg. Needing to build a tally with the wind, All-Ireland-winning captain Ronan Maher rifled an early penalty to the net after Paddy Creedon was fouled and Darragh Stakelum doubled up with a fine strike. Sam O'Farrell scored five points across the hour, including an important pair to cap the half-time deficit at four, 0-10 to 2-8. It was nip and tuck until the three-quarter mark when James Mackey's long-range shot found its way past Patrick McCormack and into the goal. In the third added minute, Stakelum's second green flag made it a one-score game, but Michael Heffernan (0-10) and Jake Morris (0-4) slotted the insurance scores. Meanwhile, Moycarkey-Borris overcame their divisional disappointment to defeat Roscrea by 1-24 to 1-18. Bill Flanagan's goal helped them into a 1-13 to 0-9 half-time advantage, although he would see red with 13 minutes remaining. If there was any doubt over the outcome, the 14 men nailed the next four points, led by Kieran Morris (0-8) and Jack Hayes (0-4). Kenny Lee flicked in a late consolation goal for Roscrea.

Tipperary GAA manager gives major update on his own future after nurturing members of current All-Ireland finalists
TIPPERARY minor boss James Woodlock looks set to remain in the role. The Drom & Inch clubman took the reins in 2021 and led the Premier young guns to All-Ireland glory in 2022 and 2024. 1 James Woodlock looks set to remain as Tipperary minor hurling manager Credit: Seb Daly/Sportsfile Tipp failed to win a game in the Munster MHC this summer but a host of his former stars sealed an All-Ireland Under-20 title under Brendan Cummins. Woodlock told SunSport: 'I'm pondering, I have a couple of offers coming and going from elsewhere, but look I'm probably embedded in Tipp hurling. 'The conveyor belt is there, I think that we're doing an excellent job with the minors, bringing them through, and we have sent a lot of the players in. 'There's no doubt about it, the 2024 crop last year, there's a lot of them going to play senior hurling. Read More on GAA 'Even the crop this year, even though we didn't win a match, there's good players coming through, so I might be forced to do another year and then maybe I can hang my hat on it and I'll have my business done for Tipp hurling.'
