Man arrested after more than €1.5 million worth of cannabis seized by Revenue

Revenue has seized approximately 80kg of herbal cannabis, which is worth more than €1.5 million, while a man has been arrested and remains in Garda custody. The massive seizure took place in Co Wexford on Friday, when a van was intercepted in the course of a joint operation organised by the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau (GNDOCB) and Revenue. As part of an intelligence-led operation, Gardaí stopped a van in Ballycaraney, Wexford yesterday and a man aged in his 40s was arrested at the scene. While the herbal cannabis, with an estimated street value of €1.6 million, is subject to analysis, the arrested man can be detained for a week. This seizure is part of Revenue's ongoing work targeting smuggling and shadow economy activity. If businesses, or members of the public have any information, they can contact Revenue in confidence on its confidential phone number, which is 1800 295 295. A spokesperson for An Garda Siochana said: "A male in his 40s was arrested at the scene and is currently being detained at a Garda Station in the east of the country under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996. He may be held for a period of up to seven days. "The drugs seized will be sent to Forensic Science Ireland for analysis. "Investigations are ongoing." Gardaí have arrested two people and seized around €715,000 worth of cocaine, crack and cannabis after a car stop led to three house raids in Dublin. While on routine patrol in the Rathcoole/Citywest areas of Dublin, uniformed Gardaí attached to Clondalkin Community Engagement stopped a vehicle in the early hours of Wednesday morning, July 16, at approximately 3.45am. The male driver of the vehicle, aged in his 20s, was searched along with the vehicle under the provisions of the Misuse of Drugs Act, 1977. During the course of the search, Gardaí seized cannabis herb (subject to analysis) with an estimated street value of €10,000. The man was arrested and detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda station in Dublin. Gardaí conducted further searches at three residential properties and during the course of these searches cannabis herb, cocaine and crack cocaine was seized along with various drug related paraphernalia. Gardai say investigations are ongoing. The male has been charged in relation to the seizure and is due to appear before Blanchardstown District Court, this morning Thursday 17 July at 10.30am. 'These separate seizures were made as a result of joint operations conducted by Revenue's Customs Service, the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau (GNDOCB) and DMR North Central and DMR East Divisional Drugs Units,' a Garda spokesperson said. 'A man aged in his 40's and a woman aged in her 50's were arrested by Gardaí and are currently detained at Garda Stations in Dublin under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996.'
