UAE's creative musicians hit high note in New York

Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) celebrated a momentous occasion with the National Youth Orchestra of Dubai (NYO-Dubai), becoming the first orchestra from the UAE to perform at New York's legendary Carnegie Hall, sharing the emirate's musical talent and cultural heritage with an international audience. Supported through its Dubai Cultural Grant programme, an initiative under the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy, this landmark achievement underscores Dubai Culture's commitment to enriching the arts ecosystem and fostering emerging voices, while advancing Dubai's ambition to become a leading hub for cultural and creative industries. The 70-strong ensemble of UAE-based young musicians delivered a captivating performance, with a standout moment being the premiere of 'Ensemble of Peace' by celebrated Emirati composer Ihab Darwish. Ahead of their performance, the group from NYO-Dubai, accompanied by Hala Badri, Director General of Dubai Culture; Shaima Rashed Al Suwaidi, CEO of the Arts, Design & Literature Sector; and Sara Al-Pachachi, Acting Director of Marketing & Corporate Communications, were led by Amira Fouad and conductor Jonathan Winter Barrett on an enriching cultural journey. This included immersive tours and workshops at some of the world's top classical music institutions. Highlights included visits to the internationally acclaimed Juilliard School and the iconic Steinway & Sons in New York, as well as participation in an exclusive masterclass directed by the esteemed Helen Cha-Pyo, Artistic Director of the Wharton Institute for the Performing Arts and Principal Conductor of the New Jersey Youth Symphony. These experiences gave the delegation unique opportunities to learn from experts, exchange ideas, and showcase their skills in exceptional settings. Dignitaries at the event. Hala Badri also highlighted Dubai Culture's collaboration with Steinway & Sons Dubai and HOUSE of PIANOS, which has resulted in the inaugural Steinway Piano Competition and Piano Camp, both supported through the Dubai Cultural Grant programme. Reflecting on the occasion, Hala Badri highlighted NYO-Dubai's role in connecting artists across borders and elevating the emirate's standing as a global centre for culture, an incubator for creativity, and a thriving hub for talent. She said, "This milestone further reinforces Dubai's dedication to nurturing the next generation of musicians, complementing the recent launch of the Dubai Orchestra project and reflecting a unified vision that places talent development, international collaboration, and artistic excellence at the heart of the city's creative strategy.' The National Youth Orchestra of Dubai is the largest and most prestigious youth orchestra in the GCC region. Founded in 2018, the National Youth Orchestra of Dubai has grown to include five orchestras with over 200 students from 30 different nationalities. Co-founded by Ms. Amira Fouad, Artistic Director and led by American Conductor and Composer Jonathan Barrett, the orchestra is presented by acclaimed violinist and Co-Founder Ms. Eva Gräsbeck - Head of Strings, Bassoonist Jackie Hayter - Head of Winds, Cellist Clara Asuaje - Lower Strings Specialist and Ronald Vint - Head of Percussion. Dubai Culture and L'ÉCOLE Middle East announce the open call for the second edition Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) has announced the open call for the second edition of 'Talent Atelier,' organised in partnership with L'ÉCOLE Middle East, School of Jewelry Arts, supported by Van Cleef & Arpels. The initiative offers participants an opportunity to expand their understanding of jewellery arts through in-class learning, hands-on practice and mentorship with industry experts. It aligns with Dubai Culture's mission to support the cultural and creative industries and strengthen Dubai's position as a global centre for culture, an incubator for creativity, and a thriving hub for talent. Emirati and UAE-based practitioners across multiple arts disciplines, such as visual arts, graphic and interior design, architecture and jewellery arts are invited to apply for the programme, which falls under the umbrella of the Dubai Cultural Grant, an initiative under the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy. Six selected designers will be chosen to attend a series of trainings and workshops in three phases: Phase 1: Dubai – from 30 June to 11 July 2025 at L'ÉCOLE Middle East's campus in Dubai Design District (d3). The sessions will explore the history and cultural evolution of jewellery, provide insights into gemstones and their properties, and introduce key methods used in fine craftsmanship. Participants will also develop their concepts into detailed sketches and initial proposals. Phase 2: Paris –from 1 to 7 September 2025 at L'ÉCOLE's France & Europe campus, located at the Hôtel de Mercy-Argenteau on the Grands Boulevards, to deepen their understanding of jewellery arts through courses and immersive experiences. Phase 3: Showcase of conceptualised projects in Dubai displaying proposed adaptations expressing knowledge and know-how. Applications are open until 1 st of June 2025. Submissions will be reviewed by a jury of industry professionals, who will assess each applicant's background, artistic approach, engagement with different media, and commitment to completing all stages of the initiative. Evaluation will be based on criteria, including material use, artistry, and the ability to produce original and distinctive work. The Talent Atelier programme aims to broaden the horizons of the UAE's creative talents and to enrich their knowledge of the forms of jewellery arts. The programme symbolises the strength of Dubai Culture and L'ÉCOLE Middle East's ongoing partnership, reflecting their shared goal of cultivating a vibrant cultural and creative ecosystem within the UAE and internationally, fostering a cross-cultural collaboration, elevating the UAE's talents and skills on the global artistic stage. About L'ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts: Established in 2012 with the support of Van Cleef & Arpels, L'ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts aims to introduce the public to all aspects of jewelry culture through various activities: courses, workshops, conversations, exhibitions, research, books and podcast. Activities at L'ÉCOLE cover three main areas: the history of jewelry, the world of gemstones and the savoir-faire of jewelry-making techniques. The courses are open to everyone, with no prerequisites: complete beginners as well as enlightened amateurs, collectors and those with a curiosity for the world of jewelry. Students experiment with gestures, skills and tools, guided by their lecturers – art historians, gemologists and craftsmen. All proceeds from L'ÉCOLE Middle East's public courses and talks are donated to Dubai Cares to support youth education programs, underscoring the school's commitment to social responsibility and youth empowerment. Dubai Municipality is set to showcase its best practices and innovative tourism projects at the 32nd Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2025, aiming to enhance Dubai's position as a global tourism destination and a hub for the tourism and entertainment industry in a modern and innovative manner, reported WAM. During the exhibition, held at the Dubai World Trade Centre from 28th April to 1st May, Dubai Municipality will present comprehensive insights into its world-class tourism projects, most notably the AED2 billion Therme Dubai, the first of its kind in the Middle East and the tallest in the world. The project will enhance the quality of life in the community and enrich the experience of Dubai's guests by offering a spa and an interactive garden. Therme Dubai also supports the objectives of the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy, which aims to position Dubai among the top 10 cities in quality of life by 2033. In addition, Dubai Municipality is highlighting a comprehensive package of innovative development projects that will transform the design and infrastructure of Dubai's public beaches. These projects will enhance the reputation, attractiveness, and brilliance of Dubai's beaches as leading global destinations, offering integrated tourism options that meet the desires and interests of residents and tourists, enhancing their experience. The Municipality is also showcasing its recreational and sports projects in the emirate's parks and facilities, including the mountain walking trail in Mushrif National Park. The trail, which extends 9.7 kilometres, is the first and longest of its kind in the heart of Dubai. It also includes the Mushrif Hub, a recreational initiative that combines a range of integrated leisure services. The Hatta Mountain Bike Trail, which is 86 kilometres long and features 21 cycling lanes and 17 walking trails, offers a unique tourist experience for visitors, professionals, and adventure enthusiasts. As part of its efforts to enhance the tourist appeal of historical and heritage areas and markets, the Municipality will highlight the historic Deira Souq as a prominent tourist destination in the emirate. It will also develop and modernise the area to preserve its symbolic value and historical significance. This will be achieved through the Heritage and Tourist Trails Project in Deira's Traditional Markets, which extends 1,740 metres in length. Dubai Municipality has equipped the markets with numerous facilities, including a prayer area for women that accommodates the needs of people of determination, innovative umbrellas, lighting, multiple seating areas, and smart bathrooms. It has also developed the courtyards intersecting with the trails by implementing architectural furnishings that reflect the historical character of the area. Bader Anwahi, CEO of the Public Facilities Agency at Dubai Municipality, said, 'The Arabian Travel Market is an exceptional annual event in the tourism and travel sector. Organised by Dubai Culture to commemorate the 45 th anniversary of the tower's inauguration, the exhibition marks the first edition of the Dubai Series, which celebrates the emirate through tributes that highlight its inspiring stories. The programme will take place on 30 April at the Al Safa Art & Design Library and aims to emphasise the significance of the exhibition, which was supported by the Sikka Platform. It includes a panel discussion titled 'Burj Rashid: A Landmark Reimagined Into Art,' moderated by architect Amal Anoohi. The session will feature artist Dr Ahmad AlAttar, founder of REALIITY, designer and artist Sara Al Khayyal, and artist and consultant Patricia Millns FRSA. They will discuss how they reinterpreted Burj Rashid's architectural identity through their artistic practices and delve into the role of contemporary art in preserving and reimagining Dubai's heritage. In parallel, illustrator, urban sketcher, and travel blogger Priya Krishnan Das will lead a workshop 'Burj Rashid: Unlock Your Creativity and Sketch the Icon!' Participants will explore ways to capture the tower's striking design and unique features through their own creative interpretations. The Burj Rashid exhibition—open until 2 May—presents works by around 30 artists from the UAE and beyond.
