Dubai to close all landfills by 2027

Dubai looks set to close all landfills in the emirate in just two years, it has been revealed. The city's waste and sewage experts have highlighted that current plans will see all landfills closed by 2027. Ahead of the previously announced date of 2030, Dubai Municipality bosses have been hard at work on alternative ways to dispose of waste. A Waste-to-Energy Centre in the Warsan district of the city has, so far, been able to process approximately two million tonnes of waste per year. Waste at the centre is able to generate 220 megawatts of renewable energy per hour, totalling 5,280 megawatts daily, which is enough to power more than 135,000 homes. The latest update on waste management in the city was made at a media briefing hosted by the Government of Dubai Media Office (GDMO) as part of its 'Meet the CEO' series. An update was also provided on the Dubai Strategic Tunnels for Sewerage Project, which aims to modernise Dubai's sewerage system by transitioning from a pumped to a gravity-based system, decommissioning pump stations for greater sustainability. The Dhs80 billion project has recently completed the tendering phase for public-private partnerships and is, therefore, further along in its development. An update was also provided on the Tasreef project, a unified rainwater drainage system scheduled for completion by 2033. The much-needed drainage project is now underway, with the initial four phases set to serve nine areas across Dubai. A total investment of Dhs30 billion will be made into the sewerage system in the emirate, with contracts worth Dhs1.439 billion awarded in April. Dubai Municipality Drives Major Urban Transformation with Focus on Sustainability and Smart Services

Dubai Municipality is ushering in a new era of urban development, blending sustainable infrastructure, digital innovation, and community-focused services to elevate the city's livability and resilience, said His Excellency Marwan bin Ghalita, Acting Director General of Dubai Municipality, during a media briefing hosted by the Government of Dubai Media Office. Addressing editors and industry leaders as part of the 'Meet the CEO' series, Bin Ghalita outlined key priorities, from AI-powered platforms to major infrastructure projects, guided by the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Among the headline initiatives is the AED30 billion 'Tasreef' rainwater drainage system and the AED80 billion Dubai Strategic Tunnels for Sewerage Project, both central to enhancing sustainability and climate resilience. The Waste-to-Energy Centre in Warsan, now operational, powers over 135,000 homes using two million tonnes of annual waste. In housing and planning, the 'Home is a Priority' initiative supports Emirati families, while AI-driven platforms like the Dubai Digital Twin improve urban planning and service delivery. Land allocations and masterplans for areas including Latifa City and Al Yalayis 5 are also underway. Public health and food safety efforts are scaling, with programmes like 'Safe Water for a Healthy Community' and tools such as the Montaji Plus app ensuring high standards for over nine million tonnes of imported food annually. Green spaces and community hubs are also expanding, with 600 trees planted daily and new parks, beaches, and majlis venues under development. Dubai Municipality is further enhancing services through virtual appointments and private-sector partnerships worth AED28 billion, all aimed at building a future-ready, people-centric city.
