Five cash-in-transit suspects killed in Crown Mines shootout with police
Five criminals were killed during a shootout with the police in Crown Mines, Johannesburg, on July 24.
According to the police, officers acted on intelligence regarding criminals allegedly planning a cash-in-transit robbery in the Johannesburg area.
The suspects' vehicle was spotted on the M1/M2 highway interchange. When the criminals saw the police, they tried to flee. A high-speed pursuit ensued, during which they opened fire on officers.
The police returned fire, and the criminals' vehicle crashed into a palisade fence. All five occupants were killed in the shootout.

Preliminary investigations confirmed that the same vehicle was involved in a murder and cash-in-transit robbery on July 14 in Kingsley, KwaZulu-Natal.
Gauteng provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni commended the law enforcement teams' joint effort.
The operation included members from National Counter Intelligence, the Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal Tactical Response Teams, the Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Gauteng Traffic and private security companies.
