28 Years Later actor Sam Locke to appear in Newport play

Sam Locke, who will feature in the upcoming 28 Years Later: Bone Temple, has been praised as a potential breakout international talent. He will take the stage in Newport this summer in Yma o Hyd, a one-act drama written and directed by his friend Dylan Duffield. The play will be performed at the Phyllis Maud Performance Space in Newport on August 9 and 10. Set in the aftermath of a mining explosion, the story follows two strangers trapped underground as they confront the weight of their past and the silence between them. It explores themes of masculinity, identity, and working-class legacy in the final days of the Welsh coal industry. Mr Duffield, who based it on stories his grandfather told him of his mining days, said: "He told me about the workers, the weight they used to carry and the strong community they were a part of. "I wanted to pay tribute to those people and make their voices heard." The play features no elaborate set design or large cast, instead relying on a stripped-back approach to focus on character and story. Mr Duffield said: "It's just two people, a moment in time and everything that bubbles up when the walls start closing in." The play is part of Perspectives, a programme from Gold Tops Studios aimed at supporting new work by local writers and performers. Mr Duffield stars as Aled in the play and said his grandfather grew up in the Rhondda Valley and worked for the National Coal Board. The production marks a return to the stage for Mr Locke before his anticipated appearance in the 28 Years Later sequel, set for release in 2026.

Expert gives tips to keep plants alive in heatwave

Heatwaves can be tough in the UK for gardens and third heatwave of the summer is set to grip the UK this weekend and some gardeners may be starting to think about how best to keep their plants Taylor, aka "the plant doctor", from Hudsons Plant Centre in Duffield, Derbyshire, has shared her best tips to stop your plants wilting or drying up over the next few days."Water, water, water," said Ms Taylor. It may seem a simple suggestion, but Ms Taylor said it's the most important advice she can give."Make sure you don't water during the middle of the day, which is usually when heat is at its height," she 57-year-old said to either water your plants first thing in the morning or last thing at Taylor also said the technique of watering can be the difference between life and death for your plant."That's one of the first things we tell staff here, you water the soil and not the leaves as the roots need it most," said Ms should grow down, not up, but if watered in sunlight, the roots will travel upwards in search of the evaporating Taylor said mulch, either stones or well-rotted compost, can also help keep moisture within the soil. "Well-rotted compost or farmyard manure will feed the ground and really help when it eventually rains," she said. Recycle your water Hosepipe bans were introduced in some areas of Derbyshire on households with or without a hosepipe ban, Ms Taylor's next piece of advice is to water your plants with as much recycled water as you can. She said: "If you are having a bath or you are washing up the dishes, keep that water and let it cool before you use it on your plants."Water butts are also useful. "They can be attached to the house, downpipe, sheds, greenhouses or anything like that." Grass looking dry? "Don't worry about your grass," added Ms Taylor."If your grass is dry and parched, a bit of rain and it will be the first thing that will bounce back, don't worry about it, it will be fine." Know your plant Knowing your plants is important, and a quick internet search can help you understand their needs and you know if your plants like direct sunlight or prefer shade? Do they like humid or dry conditions? Ms Taylor explained: "Right plant, right place, don't put a shade-loving plant in full sun."For example, tropical plants such as rubber plants, kentia, ficus and some ferns, prefer Mediterranean plants, such as thyme and lavender and other herbs, prefer dry air. Weekend away? "If you have plants in pots, place saucers underneath them, fill it with water and hope for the best," said Ms also recommended moving your potted plants to more shaded areas before you you have lots of plants in the ground, then Ms Taylor said make sure you "give them a big water before you go away or even ask your neighbours to give them a water for added: "Gardening is a great thing for community and meeting people, so I encourage you to knock on your neighbour's door and see if they can help you out."

MP calls for apology over 'Labour hounding'

The MP for Canterbury Rosie Duffield, who left the Labour Party because she said she felt "hounded" over her views on gender, has said she wants an apology from the prime minister. Ms Duffield now sits as an independent MP after falling out with the leadership over several issues, including her stance on women-only spaces. On 16 April the Supreme Court ruled the legal definition of a woman is based on biological sex, a ruling Sir Keir Starmer has said he agrees with. Speaking to BBC Radio Kent, Ms Duffield said she would like an apology from her former leader for how she was treated, but added it was "pretty obvious he's not going to, isn't it?" "I would like an apology for all of the members of the Labour Party who've been investigated, blocked, barred from being candidates," she said. "That's happened for the last few years and we'll never know the names of a lot of those people, they've had to stay anonymous. "These are people who've lost their jobs in government departments and the NHS, just for stating their views about biological sex, which are actually protected by law." When asked if she thought an apology would be made, she said: "I think it would be nice, but he's not going to, that's just not his style." Ms Duffield quit the party in September after being re-elected as Labour MP for Canterbury in July 2024, and said she could not see herself returning under the current leadership. "I'd like to rejoin, my values are core Labour values, I'm not going to change that, I'm never going to be a member of any other party but I can't imagine being able to do that under Keir Starmer's leadership, if I'm honest," she said. Supreme court backs "biological" definition of a woman Five key takeaways from the Supreme Court ruling Westminster's tortuous battle with the gender question Downing Street declined to give an official response to Ms Duffield's claims, but pointed to Sir Keir's words on the Supreme Court ruling, when he welcomed the decision, as it had given "much needed clarity for drawing up guidance". "A woman is an adult female, the court has made that absolutely clear," the spokesperson added. Follow BBC Kent on Facebook, on X, and on Instagram.
