Washington Commanders make 8 roster moves after preseason opener

The Washington Commanders announced 8 roster moves after holding tryouts for 14 players yesterday. The roster shuffle comes after the team's 48-18 preseason opener loss to the New England Patriots on Friday night. Dan Quinn said the game wasn't up to their standards, and was especially disappointed in special teams kickoff coverage that allowed two big returns including an opening kickoff touchdown by rookie RB TreVeyon Henderson. The Washington Commanders signed three players today, and all three of them were at yesterday's tryouts. LB Duke Riley and CB Essang Bassey were reported yesterday, and CB Antonio Hamilton Sr. joins them as new additions to the defense/special teams. Washington also released three players(DE Viliami Fehoko Jr, CB Allan George, LB Dominique Hampton). Fehoko Jr was injured on Friday night. Dom Hampton was a 5th round pick last year that was only active for one game, but looked lost on the field vs the Patriots. The Commanders also placed two players on injured reserve. CB Kevon Seymour didn't make the trip to New England and was one of seven players dealing with an injury. OT Lucas Niang was signed less than two weeks ago, but tore his ACL and is done for the year.

Commanders expected to sign cornerback with ties to coaching staff

The Washington Commanders were busy on Sunday, two days after Friday's disappointing 48-18 preseason loss to the New England Patriots. The Commanders brought in 14 players for tryouts, and word emerged on Sunday evening that eight-year veteran linebacker Duke Riley had been signed. Washington wasn't done. Late Sunday night, Ben Standig reported that the Commanders were expected to sign cornerback Essang Bassey. Bassey's signing is an interesting one. The Commanders appear set at cornerback. Marshon Lattimore, Mike Sainristil, Trey Amos, Jonathan Jones and Noah Igbinoghene make up what is considered a team strength. All five players should make the 53-man roster. Washington is also high on undrafted cornerback Car'lin Vigers. So why sign Bassey? Bassey, who turns 27 this week, played collegiately at Wake Forest, where he was a two-time All-ACC selection. The 5-foot-10, 190-pound Bassey entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in the 2020 NFL draft, signing with the Denver Broncos. He spent two seasons with the Broncos before he was released in December 2021 (second season) and claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Chargers. The Chargers waived him at the conclusion of that season, and Denver claimed him back off waivers and signed him to a futures contract. Bassey was released during Denver's final cuts ahead of the 2022 season and then re-signed to the practice squad. Two weeks later, he was promoted to the active roster. He re-signed with Denver following the 2022 season but was released in October 2023. Again, the Chargers claimed Bassey off waivers. He signed with the Detroit Lions last summer, but was released during Detroit's final cuts. Bassey's connection to Washington is defensive backs coach Tommy Donatell. Donatell was with the Chargers for both of Bassey's stints there. While the Commanders' top cornerbacks are healthy, others, such as Bobby Price and Kevon Seymour, are banged up. Price suffered a concussion in Friday's game and is in the NFL's concussion protocol. Here's an interesting comparison for Bassey's athletic profile. The team hasn't officially confirmed Riley or Bassey's signings, but will need to make corresponding moves once they become official. Commanders sign eight-year veteran linebacker

The Washington Commanders made a roster move on Sunday, two days after their preseason-opening loss to the New England Patriots. The Commanders signed 31-year-old linebacker Duke Riley. ESPN's Adam Schefter first reported the news. The 6-foot-1, 227-pound Riley entered the NFL as a third-round pick of the Atlanta Falcons in the 2017 NFL draft. After three seasons with the Falcons, he was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles early in the 2020 season. In 2021, Riley signed a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins. He signed a one-year extension with Miami in 2022 and later signed another two-year contract. In eight NFL seasons, Riley has appeared in 124 games, making 36 starts. He has recorded 283 career tackles, including seven for loss, six passes defensed, two sacks and one interception. Riley played collegiately at LSU. He signed with Washington after he worked out for the team. The Commanders are set at linebacker with Bobby Wagner and Frankie Luvu atop the depth chart. There are questions after those two stars. Washington is high on second-year LB Jordan Magee, but he can't seem to stay healthy. Rookie sixth-round pick Kain Medrano has had an impressive training camp, but still has a ways to go to be counted upon with any regularity. Commanders worked out two former Eagles linebackers on Sunday

The Commanders worked out 14 players on Sunday, including former Eagles linebackers Nicholas Morrow and Duke Riley The Washington Commanders have several key injuries and holdouts on the roster, and with preseason matchups looming, the NFC East hopefuls worked out 14 players on Sunday. Two of those players included former Eagles linebackers Nicholas Morrow and Duke Riley. Morrow spent the bulk of last season with the Buffalo Bills after the veteran linebacker posted 95 total tackles, including 3.0 sacks, and five passes defended in 2023 with the Eagles. Riley logged 11 tackles (five solo) across 17 regular-season games with the Dolphins in 2024.

Live updates: What the Dolphins are doing during Day 1 of free agency. All the news here

Welcome to Day 1 of the Miami Herald's Dolphins-flavored free agency blog. NFL teams can agree to contract terms with players from other teams beginning at noon Monday, but players cannot sign until 4 p.m. Wednesday. The Dolphins entered Monday with $28 million in cap space. Miami has 25 unrestricted free agents: offensive linemen Kendall Lamm, Isaiah Wynn, Robert Jones, Liam Eichenberg and Jackson Carman; outside linebackers Emmanuel Ogbah and Tyus Bowser; defensive tackles Da'Shawn Hand and Benito Jones; linebackers Tyrel Dodson, Duke Riley, Anthony Walker Jr. and Cam Brown; safeties Elijah Campbell, Jordan Poyer and Siran Neal; receivers River Cracraft, Braxton Berrios and Dee Eskridge; running back Jeff Wilson Jr.; quarterback Tyler Huntley, tight end Jack Stoll and long snapper Jake McQuaide. Among restricted free agents, Miami tendered cornerback Kader Kohou but not linebacker Quinton Bell or receiver Anthony Schwartz. Among exclusive rights free agents, the Dolphins tendered outside linebacker Cameron Goode and offensive tackle Kion Smith, but not receiver Grant DuBose, though his return hasn't been ruled out. Check here all day for updates, with newer ones added at the top. 10 am: Besides the obvious needs that will be addressed in the next couple of days (guard, defensive line, cornerback, safety, backup quarterback), Miami also has inside linebacker very much on its mind. A source confirmed a Dolphins Talk report that San Francisco free agent Dre Greenlaw is someone of interest to Miami. But his market is expected to exceed what Miami is willing or able to pay. The Dolphins also remain interested in re-signing Tyrel Dodson if the sides can agree to terms. But they're exploring the market in case they don't strike a deal. Except for Jordyn Brooks and seldom-used Channing Tindall, all of Miami's other inside linebackers are free agents (Dodson, Anthony Walker Jr., Duke Riley). 9:50 a.m.: The Dolphins know they must add an established defensive tackle, and two more quality veterans just became available, with Atlanta set to release Grady Jarrett and the 49ers cutting Maliek Collins. Keep checking back all day for updates.
