Peoria City Council approves $475,000 grant to demolish more vacant homes

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — An abandoned home demolition program in Peoria is getting nearly another half million dollars in state funding. Peoria City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved the $475,000 grant from the Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA). It's the second round of funding for the Strong Communities Program. Joe Dulin, the city's community development director, said they demolished more than 90 blighted homes in the first round to make way for new affordable housing in the East Bluff and the Southside. This includes Church View Gardens, the Southside's first new housing complex in more than 20 years. Dulin said the additional funding will allow them to demolish 40 more homes. But there was debate among city councilmembers about what kind of developers they should work with. 'But I wish we would have a little bit more compassion for what really built our neighborhood and instead of how do we get the investors from Jersey to come here and make investments until their tax credits run out and the place becomes a disaster,' said At-Large City Councilman John Kelly. First District City Councilwoman Denise Jackson said rental developments should also be on the table to increase access to housing. 'You live in a community that has developed this infamous distinction as one of the poorest zip codes in the country, you have so much poverty as a result of years and years of disinvestment. And you come to the realization that folks living in this area, some of which are not in position to purchase a home,' she said. The Strong Communities Program is a state initiative that provides grant funding to local government agencies to address affordable housing needs and revitalize communities. The program is funded by the Rebuild Illinois capital plan and managed by IDHA. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Charlotte City Council hear from applicants to fill Bokhari's District 6 seat

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Charlotte leaders are one step closer to filling a vacancy on the city council. Five of the ten applicants for South Charlotte's District 6 spoke before council members on Thursday. The selected candidate will replace Tariq Bokhari, who left his seat in April to accept a role with the Trump Administration. Charlotte City Council member Tariq Bokhari holds final town hall before resigning for position with Trump administration The five that appeared before the council were Sary Chakra, Andy Dulin, Edwin Peacock, James Rice, and La Reisha Poore. But of that five, Dulin and Peacock have a leg up. Both have previously served on the council, and both said they will not run for the seat when it comes open in November. Dulin told the council he knows every corner of the district, while Peacock said he has the qualifications and perspective to join the council. But Dulin and Peacock cannot be called frontrunners. Krista Bokhari, Tariq's wife, also applied for the seat. While she strongly disagreed with a recent settlement between the city and Charlotte's police chief, she has party support. The Mecklenburg County GOP gave their endorsement on Wednesday. The council will have the weekend to make their decision, a vote will be held this coming Monday, May 19. The appointee's first day would be June 2. That appointee will serve through December until an elected successor assumes the office. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Suspect charged in killing of French schoolgirl, 11

EVRY, France: The prime suspect in the murder of an 11-year-old French schoolgirl, who was found in the woods with multiple stab wounds, was charged after confessing to the crime, prosecutors said on Wednesday. In a killing that shocked France, the body of the girl, named as Louise, was found on Saturday close to her school. She had been missing since leaving school in the suburban town of Epinay-sur-Orge about 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of Paris on Friday afternoon. French police on Monday arrested a man aged 23 and his DNA was found on Louise's hands, according to prosecutors. 'The main suspect admitted to the charges against him while in custody,' public prosecutor Gregoire Dulin said in a statement. Later Wednesday, the prosecutors' office said he had been charged and that they would ask a judge to approve keeping him in detention. The man's parents and girlfriend, 23, had also been detained on suspicion of failing to report a crime, prosecutors said. On Saturday, prosecutor Dulin had said that 'there is no evidence to suggest that sexual violence was committed.' French media described the suspect as a 'video game addict,' and Dulin said on Wednesday that he may have been looking for 'somebody to rob' in an attempt 'to calm down' after an altercation during an online video game. But he 'panicked' when Louise began to scream, Dulin added. Le Parisien daily had earlier pointed to 'the possibility of a sadistic act.' Although he was not known to suffer from psychiatric disorders, the suspect could be 'very violent' and was known to have repeatedly beaten his younger sister, the newspaper added. The killing comes at a time when law and order, and in particular crime against children, are major issues in French politics and society. Speaking on Wednesday, Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau expressed 'deepest sympathy' to Louise's family. The hard-line minister has vowed to tighten law and order in France. 'The whole establishment is in shock,' Education Minister Elisabeth Borne said on Tuesday. Flowers and candles have been placed in front of the Andre Maurois school that Louise attended, as well as at the foot of a tree where the body was found. A woman, who provided only her first name, Josephine, said she felt 'upset all weekend.' 'I wasn't well, it made me think of my granddaughter and my grandson,' she said in the town where the body was found on Tuesday. 'We're not at peace anywhere.' 'As soon as I was told about it, I said it's the little girl with long hair,' she added. A psychological support unit has been set up in Epinay-sur-Orge.

Colts 2025 free agency predictions: Will WR Ashton Dulin return?

In the coming weeks, we will be taking a closer look at each of the Indianapolis Colts' unrestricted free agents and making a prediction as to whether or not they will return for the 2025 season. Up next, let's take a look at wide receiver Ashton Dulin. If you've missed any of our other free agency predictions, you can find them below. Will Fries Julian Blackmon Grant Stuard Ryan Kelly Dayo Odeyingbo Mo Alie-Cox Trey Sermon The 2024 season was Dulin's sixth with the Colts, and he saw his first action since the 2022 season after missing all of 2023 with an ACL injury. Dulin saw some opportunities on offense, playing 182 snaps during the season. He had just two catches on eight targets for 67 yards, although one of those receptions went for 54 yards and a score. Dulin did get some touches in the run game as well and is a very capable blocker at the receiver position. However, where Dulin makes his greatest impact is on special teams. In total, Dulin played 295 special teams snaps and did so across five of the six different phases. Out of 200 eligible players, Dulin ranked 13th in PFF's special teams grade in 2024. He provided some stability at the return position for much of the year, until rookie Anthony Gould's role expanded as he got more comfortable. Dulin was then particularly good as a flier on the punt coverage unit, playing a key role in punter Rigoberto Sanchez ranking fourth in fair catches this past season. It's also not a coincidence that when Dulin missed time with an injury, the Colts' punt coverage unit wasn't as good. Ideally, AD Mitchell takes a big step forward in 2024 so the need to rely on Dulin as the fourth receiver doesn't exist all that much. But having said that, similar to Grant Stuard at linebacker, there is value in having the stability that Dulin can provide off the bench if Indianapolis is in a pinch. Also, every team needs two or three core special teams players who are really good at that job, and that's Dulin–not to mention bringing him back isn't going to break the salary cap bank by any means. 'The one that we missed most was Ashton Dulin just because he did so much,' general manager Chris Ballard said last offseason about not having Dulin in 2023. 'He can play multiple spots. He does the dirty work. And then if you have to start him you can still play winning football. Losing Ashton during camp last year, that sucked.' Prediction: Ashton Dulin is re-signed
