Mentally challenged man held for trying to burn plastic waste on railway track in Tripura
The Tripura police on Wednesday detained a mentally challenged man for allegedly trying to set fire to plastic waste on a railway track at Bishalgarh in Sepahijala district. His identity is yet to be known. The police said the man was seen trying to set fire to some chips packets on the railway track at the Bishalgarh railway station when some locals caught him and handed him over to the police. 'The person is mentally challenged. We have registered a general diary entry on this incident,' said an officer of the Bishalgarh police station. No train service has been affected because of the incident, officials said. Several Demu trains and the Sabroom-Sealdah Kanchanjungha Express use this stretch. However, the express train was not running on the route as all long-distance train services out of Tripura have been suspended since Monday, after boulders and a landmass fell on the railway track in the New Haflong-Jatinga Lumpur section, allegedly because of improper road repair work undertaken by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). The Northeast Frontier Railway has cancelled the Guwahati-Silchar Express and Dullabcherra-Guwahati Express while short-terminating six other trains–the Sealdah-Silchar Kanchanjunga Express, Lokmanya Tilak Express plying between Agartala and Mumbai, Tejas Express connecting Agartala with New Delhi, Kolkata-Agartala Garib Rath Express, Cherlapally-Silchar Express, and the Silchar-Naharlagun Express. The Silchar-New Delhi PSK Express was rescheduled owing to the disruption.

Trains Halted, Highway Closed After Massive Landslide In Assam's Dima Hasao
Guwahati: Train and road connectivity between the Assam towns of Haflong and Silchar has been severely disrupted following a landslide near the Jatinga-Lampur section. The landslide, reportedly triggered by ongoing road repairs, has forced the suspension of train services over the Lumding-Badarpur hill section and prompted a complete halt to vehicular movement along National Highway 27. Train services to Tripura, Manipur and Southern Assam remain disrupted following the landslides. Officials said that slope failure occurred downstream between the highway and the adjacent railway track due to repair work undertaken by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Soil and debris have slid onto the railway alignment, and water has begun flowing directly onto the tracks. With the site declared unsafe, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) halted train operations through the section on Monday evening as a precautionary measure. The NFR's Lumding Division has called on NHAI to immediately carry out protective measures and deploy technical experts to prevent further damage to the critical infrastructure. Meanwhile, railway teams have begun clearing the debris from the tracks. Multiple trains have either been cancelled or short-terminated due to the disruption. Among the cancellations on June 23 are the Guwahati-Silchar Express, Rangiya-Silchar Express, Guwahati-Dullabcherra Express, and Silchar-Rangiya Express. Services cancelled for June 24 include the Dullabcherra-Guwahati Express and Naharlagun-Silchar Special. Short-terminated trains include: Silchar-Naharlagun Special at New Harangajao Charlapalli-Silchar Express at Lumding Kolkata-Agartala Garib Rath Express at Guwahati Agartala-Anand Vihar Tejas Express at Badarpur Lokmanya Tilak-Agartala Express at Guwahati Sealdah-Silchar Kanchanjungha Express at Lumding In response to the situation, the Dima Hasao District Administration has imposed a travel ban on the Haflong-Silchar stretch of NH-27 under Section 34(C) of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, citing the risk of continued slope movement. Travellers have been advised to avoid the route until further notice. The administration has directed both NHAI and the railway authorities to send technical teams for site assessment and stabilisation. While restoration efforts are underway, officials have yet to announce when normal services will resume.

Heavy rain pounds Assam, sends rivers in spate; road-railway transport hit, 8 killed
Heavy rain continued pounding Assam on Sunday, exacerbating an already delicate situation brought on by rain-induced floods. The rain, floods and landslides in the northeastern state have disrupted the road transport and train services and have killed at least eight people so far. Over 78000 people across 15 districts have been affected by the weather. The Central Water Commission (CWC) informed the masses that 10 major rivers in Assam, including the Brahmaputra and Barak, were flowing above the danger level, triggering a flood-like situation in several districts. The CWC bulletin said the Brahmaputra was flowing above the danger level in Dibrugarh and Nematighat (Jorhat). Other rivers that have breached the danger mark are: Dhaleswari at Gharmura (Hailakandi), Rukni at Dholai (Cachar), Katakhal at Matijuri (Hailakandi), Barak at Badarpur Ghat (Sribhumi), Buridehing at Margherita (Tinsukia), Kushiyara in Sribhumi, Dhansiri at Numaligarh (Golaghat) and Kopili at Kampur (Nagaon). The bad weather has also affected the train services. A Northeast Frontier Railway spokesperson said that in the wake of heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours and water flowing over the tracks on the Baraigram-Dullabcherra section, the Dullabcherra-Silchar passenger train has been cancelled for the day. The Dullabcherra-Guwahati Express will start from Baraigram instead of Dullabcherra, he added. Road transport is also affected, with large portions of National Highway-17 having been submerged near Shingra Shalnibari in the Chaygaon area of the Kamrup district since Saturday. Officials have blamed heavy rain and water flowing down from Meghalaya for the situation in the area, reported PTI. Over 78,000 residents have been affected in more than 15 districts, they said. The Central Water Commission has issued an 'orange bulletin' for the state in view of the 'severe flood situation' as 10 major rivers, including the Brahmaputra and Barak, were flowing above the danger level. Large portions of National Highway-17 have been overtopped near Shingra Shalnibari in Chaygaon area of Kamrup district since Saturday, the officials said. Heavy rain coupled with water flowing down from neighbouring Meghalaya has aggravated the situation in the area, they said. Measures were being taken to facilitate traffic movement using alternative routes, the officials said. The CWC bulletin said the Brahmaputra was flowing above the danger level in Dibrugarh and Nematighat . Other rivers that have breached the danger mark are Dhaleswari at Gharmura , Rukni at Dholai , Katakhal at Matijuri , Barak at Badarpur Ghat , Buridehing at Margherita , Kushiyara in Sribhumi, Dhansiri at Numaligarh and Kopili at Kampur , it said. An Assam State Disaster Management bulletin had said that till Saturday evening, five people have been killed in landslides and three in floods. Three districts in the western part of the state were on 'red alert' on Saturday and eight more on 'orange alert', as per Regional Meteorological Centre data, even as rainwater from upstream areas of Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya worsened the flood situation in Assam. Multiple agencies, including the NDRF, SDRF, police, fire and emergency services personnel were pressed into relief and rescue operations, with people evacuated to safety from flood-affected areas, the officials said. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said on Friday that the state was facing an 'abnormal situation' due to incessant downpour caused by massive cloud cover over several parts of the northeast.
