Gorey Celtic spring surprise against Corach Ramblers in Over-35 Cup quarter-final
The four Anthony Rowe Windscreens Over-35 Cup quarter-finals took place on Friday and onlookers were treated to some quality games and plenty of goals. Cup favourites and free-scoring Corach Ramblers made the journey up to Bodibro Park to play Gorey Celtic. The home side wer looking to pull off a big shock as they were ranked 12/1 outsiders with the bookies. And a cup upset was in store as to their credit Gorey dominated large spells of this game and spurned many decent chances but still managed to prevail on a 2-1 scoreline. John Joe Carthy and Gavin O'Looney scored for the home side with Seán Byrne on target for Corach. Rosslare Rangers went up to Ballywilliam looking to keep their quest of getting back to another final alive, and they dominated this game from start to finish, proving far too strong for an understrength home side. Danny Furlong hit a hat-trick while Warren Broaders, Gearóid Byrne and Darren Morris added a goal each in a comfortable 6-0 win for the visitors. Forth Celtic hosted Taghmon in Murrintown and, after a hard-fought game which saw both sides miss good chances, the home team struck three times in the last 20 minutes to run out 3-0 winners. Michael O'Brien with two and 'Patsy' Malone were on the scoresheet. Courtown moved into the semi-finals without having to kick a ball, as their match against All Blacks failed to materialise as the Mayglass men were unable to field a team. In the Bet XS Shield quarter-finals, Duncannon welcomed Rosslare Strand to Mersheen on Saturday evening, with both sides searching for their first win of the season. This game went all the way to extra-time and it was Strand who claimed the win. Paddy Roche had put Duncannon ahead, but Ciaran Murphy levelled just after half-time before James Delaney got the winner late in extra-time. St. Joseph's overcame Kilmore after a fiery encounter in Kilmuckridge which saw six players booked. Goals from Gary O'Leary, Aaron O'Brien and Des Mythen had the Joeys 3-0 up before Jay Malone got a late consolation goal for Kilmore. On Saturday evening Crossabeg hosted Cloughbawn and the home side went ahead early in the this game through Will McCreevey before Johnny Whelan levelled on 28 minutes. Crossabeg then spurned three good chances in the second-half, before the wily Willie Murphy thundered a header to the roof of the net with five minutes to go to win it for Cloughbawn. In the last quarter-final, Arklow welcomed Ballymurn to Lamberton and this was the game of the weekend as the sides went toe-to-toe for 70 minutes and a further 20 minutes of extra-time couldn't split them. It went to penalties and Arklow prevailed 3-1. Mark Nolan had twice given Town the lead in normal time, but goals from Dani Santori and a wonder goal from 30 yards from Diarmuid Heffernan took the game to extra-time. The Over-35 committee would like to wish a speedy recovery to Ballymurn's Dani Santori who picked up a nasty season-ending injury in this game. This weekend sees our League and League Trophy quarter-finals down for decision at 7.30 p.m. on Friday, July 11 unless where stated. Diskin Design League quarter-finals: Corach Ramblers v. Connicks hit the back of the net as Shelburne United beat Duncannon in Over-35 League
In the O'Brien Transport Group A, Duncannon hosted Shelburne for the second week in a row. After a disappointing defeat seven days earlier, the home side were hoping to finally pick up their first win of the season. However, it was the away side who returned home with the three points and in the process secured their own first league win with a goal in each half from James and Chris Connick. The two unbeaten sides in this group met in Danescastle, and home side Corach Ramblers got the win after putting in their best performance of the season to date to romp to a 5-2 victory. John Staples had a double while Niall Harney, Jamie Staunton and Alan Diskin were also on the scoresheet, with Adam Gracz and Ian White replying for Cloughbawn. In the Crystal Script Engraving Group B, there was only game played and Crossabeg picked up their second win of the season as they put in a storming second-half performance to come from 1-0 down to run out 4-1 victors. Mark Corish had put the All Blacks in front, but goals from Fergal Buckley (two), Barry Coughlan and Pádraig Whitty transformed this contest. In the Group C, Forth Celtic welcomed Rosslare Strand to Murrintown. Strand have struggled so far this season and had lost all four games, but they put in a decent performance and limited Forth to only a few chances. They will be happy enough to have left with a share of the spoils to get their season up and running. Aaron Whitty struck Forth's goal and Stuart Hayden was on target for Strand. In the other game in this group, Kilmore produced a defensive horror show as mistake after mistake at the back allowed Rosslare Rangers cruise to a 5-2 win. Two Jason Murphy goals for Kilmore were in vain as Warren Broaders with a double, Aaron Kehoe, Danny Furlong and Paul Boyce scored for the winners. ADVERTISEMENT In the SouthEast Vegetables Group D, Gorey Celtic prevailed by one goal against Courtown Hibs after a titanic struggle and a game with end-to-end action. Luke Kavanagh was the match-winner. St. Joseph's travelled up to Lamberton and picked up their third win of the season to move clear at the top of the table. Andy Forde and Pa O'Rourke had the goals for the winners with Joe McCallion replying for Arklow who also missed a penalty with a couple of minutes left. It will be the fifth round of group games this Friday night as the battle to finish in the top two and qualify for a league quarter-final intensifies. All games are on Friday, June 20 and will kick-off at 7.30 p.m. – Group A: Cloughbawn v. Duncannon; Shelburne v. Corach Ramblers; Group B: Ballymurn Celtic v. Crossabeg; Taghmon United v. All Blacks; Group C: Kilmore United v. Forth Celtic; Rosslare Strand v. Rosslare Rangers; Group D: Courtown Hibs v. Arklow Town; St. Joseph's v. Gorey Celtic. DANIEL WOLOHAN CUP On Monday, October 16, 2023, the football family of Arklow Town and surrounding areas were thrown into utter shock and sadness at the sudden passing of Daniel Wolohan. Daniel, a devoted family man, was married to the love of his life, Kirby, with whom he had three beautiful children: Kasey, Leo and Penny. The winter was long and time moved slowly on, but the dearly-departed Daniel was never far from anyone's mind. Then August 17, 2024 came around – a day filled with joy and at the same time sadness as Daniel's beloved Arklow Town claimed their first-ever trophy in the Richie Dwyer Over-35 Wexford Soccer League, beating Cloughbawn in the League Trophy final. And without a doubt they did have a twelfth man on the field that day as Daniel was surely savouring every minute of it. Anyone who had the privilege to know Daniel was extremely lucky, and their life was definitely better for him being in it. As a small gesture towards his family and his beloved Arklow Town, the league organisers decided to try to honour his memory and make sure his name will forever live on in one of his passions in life: football. In order to do that, the Over-35 League Trophy will forever more be known as the Daniel Wolohan Memorial Trophy. 'It's a small gesture of our appreciation and one we hope will bring some small bit of comfort to Kirby, Kasey, Leo and Penny in the months and years ahead,' league Chairman Joe Doyle said. Daniel Wolohan was a gentleman to his fingertips. His love for his family and his football club will live on forever, aided a small bit by the renaming of this trophy. Cloughbawn win Over-35 derby against Shelburne with goal from Kennedy
After a hard fought-game, it was the away side who claimed the points and the bragging rights for a few weeks at least as a Stephen Kennedy goal midway through the first-half proved to be the difference. In this group's other game played in Danescastle on Friday evening, home side Corach Ramblers went top of the table after a somewhat disjointed display against a hard-working Duncannon. Corach were two up inside the first ten minutes after a double from Brian O'Connor. To their credit the visitors got back into the game and went close on a couple of occasions. A penalty from Barry Molloy pulled a goal back, but Alan Diskin made sure of the points late on for the home side. In Crystal Script Engraving Group B, Ballymurn Celtic hosted All Blacks and after a good hard game the sides couldn't be separated. Paul Walsh was on target for the home team and Mark Corish replied for the visitors. Crossabeg entertained Taghmon United in the game of the night as an end-to-end contest developed and the two teams went toe-to-toe. Two wonderful 30-yard free-kicks from Vinnie Sullivan and Fergal Buckley for Crossabeg were bettered by a Seamie McLoughlin brace and an own goal. In Group C, Kilmore United hosted Rosslare Strand and, after an even opening 20 minutes, the home side proved too strong for their opponents and ran out convincing 6-0 winners. Craig McGuire hit a hat-trick along with a goal apiece for Jay Malone, Devin Furlong and Stevo Redmond. In the group's other game, Rosslare Rangers lost their first league tie in over two years as Forth Celtic made the trip down worthwhile, returning home with the three points to blow this group wide open. ADVERTISEMENT Learn more Patsy Malone and Anthony Hayes were on target for the winners, with Aaron Kehoe getting a last-minute consolation goal for the hosts. Finally, in South East Vegetables Group D, St. Joseph's with maximum points from their opening two games entertained Courtown Hibs. Scott Fitzpatrick took home the match ball after a hat-trick and a Stephen Davis goal had the Hibs 4-0 up before Gary O'Leary got a consolation goal for Joey's. Gorey Celtic and Arklow Town shared the points in a great game of football. John Lavery and Ger Carey were on target for Celtic, with Willie Kavanagh and Gavin Doyle replying for Arklow. With no action this weekend owing to the bank holiday, the games will resume on Friday, June 6 with last 16 games in the cup.

No sign in Pennsylvania, so far, of Pacific Northwest-like takeover by CVS of some Rite Aid stores
PERRY COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — Wednesday is Newport's last day. Thursday is Duncannon's turn, based on a sign in that store's window. And then, for these two Rite Aid stores, the only two chain pharmacies serving their communities? 'I would like to see someone else take over,' said Linda Geiling, walking out of the Newport-area store — which is actually in Howe Township, on the way out of Newport toward where she lives, in Dutch Valley — for perhaps the last time Monday morning. People in Washington state, Oregon and Idaho had wishes like that one granted, when CVS confirmed last week an earlier announcement by Rite Aid that it was selling some 'pharmacy assets' to CVS included a rather seamless transfer of 64 actual stores to the surviving chain (in addition to the transfer of prescriptions at more than 1,000 other stores to competing pharmacies). Lancaster County construction company announces acquisition But that remains the only such notable announcement of its kind, with Rite Aids closing day by day — including in Pennsylvania, where the chain emerged last fall from its first bankruptcy filing with 351 stores, according to an abc27 analysis at the time of Scrapehero data — and no other pharmacy taking immediate control of the space. A public relations firm now handling media requests for Rite Aid, as it winds down its operations, didn't immediately repond to a request to confirm that aside from the CVS deal in the Pacific Northwest, Rite Aid hasn't sold chunks of stores in other areas to other pharmacy chains. Unlike in most densely-populated places in America, Walgreens doesn't compete in central Pennsylvania. One analyst told abc27 last month the Rite Aid stores might present too compelling of an opportunity for Walgreens to overlook in a market CVS will soon have to itself, among national chains. Another analyst doubted Walgreens, which is closing thousands of its own stores, would jump on even that opportunity. The closest pharmacies in Newport are one in a Weis Markets store in the borough and the independent Newport Pharmacy, about halfway between the borough and the soon-to-be-shuttered Rite Aid. Karin Getz, considering her options, said Newport Pharmacy is appealing in some ways. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now 'They have their own perks,' Getz said. 'They do deliveries.' On the other hand, 'I was visiting my sister, who lives outside of Philadelphia,' Getz said. 'I forgot the medicine. I could go to a Rite Aid, and they could help me.' Soon, barring a last-minute surprise, few Rite Aids will be helping anybody. The lack of a network like that — complete with a smattering of 24-hour locations — is a downside of an independent pharmacy, and Weis doesn't serve Philadelphia. CVS does. But they don't serve Newport. Enough other people have already picked Newport Pharmacy that workers there — like the pharmacist, Praveena Sagi — were 'not prepared for this influx.' 'Newport Pharmacy, can you please hold?' Sagi asked caller after caller, while talking to others and coordinating with technicians in the store. 'We're bombarded with the calls and with transfer requests,' Sagi said. A challenge, to be sure — although to be equally clear: a high-quality problem to have. 'It is a good thing for us,' Sagi said. Wexford FC legend on the scoresheet in local derby Over-35 victory
In O'Brien's Transport Group A, there was a top of the table clash as Cloughbawn hosted Corach Ramblers. Both sides had convincing wins in the first round. After 70 pulsating minutes where each team had spells of dominance, neither could find the back of the net and had to be content with a share of the spoils. In the other game in this group, Shelburne entertained Duncannon and a contest with loads of chances saw Thomas Connick put the home side in front just before half-time. Duncannon pushed hard for the equalizer in the second-half and it arrived with five minutes to go thanks to Barry Molloy, and that's how the game finished. In Crystal Script Engraving Group B a keenly-contested derby saw Crossabeg take on Ballymurn Celtic. And it was the away side who secured the three points and the bragging rights as goals from Manuel Jean and Shane Campbell put them 2-0 ahead before Nicky Whitty pulled one back late in the game for Crossabeg. All Blacks made the short journey to Horetown to play Taghmon and returned home with the three points after coming from a goal down early on to run out deserving 2-1 winners. Shane Power was on target for the home side with Justin Morgan and Jamie Codd scoring for the visitors. In Group C, Forth Celtic made the journey to Rosslare Strand with both sides in search of their first win. And it was Celtic who returned home with the three points thanks to goals from Colin Stafford with a double and Keith Murphy. Barry Byrne struck a consolation goal for the Strand. Rosslare Rangers made the trip to Kilmore worthwhile as they picked up their second win in as many weeks with goals from Paul Culleton and Danny Furlong. In South East Vegetables Group D, St. Joseph's moved clear at the top after a very convincing 4-0 win at home to Arklow Town. Their goals came from Shane Grannell with a brace, Micko Farrington and Paddy Fennell. In the other game, Gorey travelled to Courtown Hibs and took the lead just after half-time through a John Lavery header, but it was shortlived as Wes Fitzpatrick had the home side level within five mins and that's how the game ended.
