Sonali Bendre says her role in Shah Rukh Khan's Duplicate was reduced to a secondary character: ‘I was supposed to have equal screen space'

When Shah Rukh Khan's Duplicate released, it made a lot of noise for the actor's dual role. Juhi Chawla and Sonali Bendre were cast as the female leads. The film earned double its budget of Rs 10 crore and became one of the highest grossing film of 1998. However, Sonali recently revealed that she felt shortchanged by the way her role turned out in Duplicate, saying it 'became more of a secondary character.' In an interview with Bollywood Bubble, Sonali expressed her frustration with the role and said, 'It was a film that a lot of people talk about. But this is one of those films that really helped shape the way I wanted my character to be. The idea was to have beautiful grey shades in this character, but it kind of started becoming very one-dimensional. I think it became more of a secondary character when I got onto it.' Sonali Bendre agreed to take on the role solely because of her positive experience working with filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt on Zakhm, which released the same year. Although her role in Zakhm was also brief, she was aware of it from the outset, unlike in Duplicate. She said, 'When I did Zakhm, I knew it wasn't the main character. I knew Pooja (Bhatt) had that role. But it was a beautiful story with Bhatt Sahab, and I just wanted to be a part of it, so I did it. But when Duplicate was concerned, I was supposed to have had an equal amount. And at that point, it started to feel like it wasn't the same kind of role anymore. So at that time, I did start to feel like I wasn't getting my due. But I think eventually, it all evened out, and I did get my due.' She shared, 'There was a film I was doing at that time called Duplicate where I was approached to play a grey character in some way. It was very exciting and challenging for me to portray that character. We started preparing for the role in that way and also started shooting it accordingly, but slowly, as things moved, I felt I became a caricature and not really the grey character I was supposed to play.' Expressing her disappointment in the kind of shift the film took during the filming process, Sonali added, 'Every time a Duplicate song is played and people mention the film, the thing that I remember the most is the fact that how much a story can get de-railed and how much you can start with something and where it goes. And, for me, that was a huge learning. As time goes by, you start thinking whether I misinterpreted something or it was the other way around. But then, as you go forward, sometimes you do things for that paycheck, but other than that, in my second innings, I don't want to be slotted and boxed, and I want to do characters that break this stereotype.'

Sonali Bendre Says She Didn't Get Her Due In SRK's Duplicate: 'I Was Supposed To Have An Equal…'

Sonali Bendre recalls her role in Duplicate with Shah Rukh Khan, saying it lost its edge over time. Sonali Bendre has been a familiar face in Hindi cinema for decades, winning hearts with her performances across a variety of genres. But not every film journey has been fulfilling. While revisiting her 1998 movie Duplicate, where she starred opposite Shah Rukh Khan, the actress shared that the experience left her feeling creatively shortchanged. In a candid chat with Bollywood Bubble, Sonali reacted to an old picture from Duplicate and admitted the film is still remembered fondly, especially the songs. However, she felt the character she played didn't evolve as promised. 'This was—I mean, you know—because it's Shah Rukh, and because that song was so popular. It was a film that a lot of people talk about. But this is one of those films that really helped shape the way I wanted my character to be. The idea was to have beautiful grey shades in this character, but it kind of started becoming… my character started becoming very one-dimensional, you know? I think it became more of a secondary character when I got onto it," she said. Looking back at her choices, Sonali compared her experience in Duplicate to her part in Zakhm. While she knew Zakhm featured Pooja Bhatt in the lead, she took on her role with full awareness because of her admiration for director Mahesh Bhatt and the strength of the story. She added, 'See, when I did Zakhm, I knew it wasn't the main character—I knew Pooja had that role. But it was a beautiful story with Bhatt Sahab, and I just wanted to be a part of it, so I did it. But when Duplicate was concerned, I was supposed to have had an equal amount, you know? And at that point, it started to feel like it wasn't the same kind of role anymore. So at that time, I did start to feel like I wasn't getting my due. But I think eventually, it all evened out, and you know—I did get my due." Sonali Bendre revisits her experiences filming the 1998 film Duplicate with Shah Rukh Khan. She shares insights about her evolving role and early career decisions. Bendre compares her roles in Duplicate and Zakhm. She recalls filming a song for Duplicate, praising Karan Johar's vision and Farah Khan's styling. The actress acknowledges the song's popularity and the film's lasting impact. Over the years, Sonali Bendre has left an indelible mark with her performances across genres. However, not every film experience has matched her expectations. While revisiting moments from the 1998 film Duplicate alongside Shah Rukh Khan , the actress opened up about the evolving nature of her role, her early career choices, and why she felt her character didn't receive the credit it deserved. A Role That Shifted Over Time When shown a picture with Shah Rukh Khan from the film Duplicate, Sonali reflected on the experience with a mix of nostalgia and insight in a chat with Bollywood Bubble. She acknowledged the popularity of the song and how often people still mention the film. While the project was memorable, she revealed that it also shaped her perspective on choosing roles. Her character was initially envisioned with intriguing grey shades, but over time, she felt it became increasingly one-dimensional and took on more of a secondary presence in the narrative. Comparing Duplicate and Zakhm She further reflected on her experiences with role selection, comparing her work in Zakhm and Duplicate. She shared that while she was aware from the start that her part in Zakhm wasn't the lead—since that belonged to Pooja Bhatt—she accepted it because of the powerful story and her respect for director Mahesh Bhatt . However, with Duplicate, she had initially been promised a role of equal prominence. Over time, she began to feel sidelined and sensed that she wasn't receiving the recognition she deserved. Still, she believes that things eventually balanced out in her career, and she did receive her due. A Memorable Song Shoot In conclusion, the actress reminisced about filming one of the songs from Duplicate, highlighting the creative vision behind it. While she couldn't immediately recall the exact track—clarifying it wasn't Mere Mehboob Mere Sanam—she credited Karan Johar for his vision and mentioned the unique styling, including a short wig chosen by choreographer Farah Khan. Juhi Chawla recalls strained equation with Shah Rukh Khan after their production company folded; says kids Janhvi, Arjun ‘bawled' when KKR lost

Apart from starring in blockbusters like Darr, Yes Boss, Duplicate, and more, Juhi Chawla and Shah Rukh Khan are also co-owners of the Indian Premier League (IPL) team Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Although KKR has won three IPL trophies since the tournament's inception 17 years ago, the team had a rough start and performed poorly during the initial years. In an earlier interaction, Juhi shared that her kids — Arjun Mehta and Jhanvi Mehta — would often cry during those early IPL seasons as their team frequently finished at the bottom of the table. Speaking to Rajeev Masand in an old interview, Juhi said, 'Those were trying times when during first initial years, KKR would come at the bottom of the list and my kids would cry saying, 'What is this team you have?' And they would go to the Dhirubhai Ambani International School and it wasn't easy for them.' Dhirubhai Ambani International School is owned by the Ambani family — who also own Mumbai Indians, KKR's rival team. In addition to acting in many iconic films, Shah Rukh and Juhi also ventured into film production in 1999 by launching their own banner, Dreamz Unlimited, alongside director Aziz Mirza. However, after producing three films — Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, Asoka, and Chalte Chalte — the production house eventually shut down. In the same conversation, Juhi explained the reason behind its closure and also reflected on the tense period when she and Shah Rukh did not speak after Dreamz Unlimited came to an end. She said, 'We made Ashoka that won a lot of critical acclaim but didn't do well at box office. Then they started Chalte Chalte. I was helping behind-the-scene but then I was expecting at that time and I had to go away and I was in London for a lot of the time. They made the film. After that…I don't know why. Then Aziz Mirza lost his wife and was heart broken and then, I don't know why, but we didn't make more films in Dreamz because we needed Aziz ji to come up with more scripts.' Speaking about how the end of the production company impacted her relationship with Shah Rukh, Juhi said, 'At that time my work changed and my family was growing, I was moving in another direction. Earlier, we were on set together and then you work behind-the-scene but later you are further away from each other. Also, my nature of work changed, I was suddenly started doing films like 3 Deewarein, My Brother…Nikhil, Jhankaar Beats and others.'
