FPS meant to supply ration to all card holders: Minister

Rajamahendravaram: The coalition government is committed to ensuring that welfare schemes reach every eligible beneficiary in a satisfactory and timely manner, said Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Cinematography, Kandula Durgesh. Speaking at Sathivada village in Undrajavaram mandal on Sunday, where he inaugurated the distribution of essential commodities through fair price shops, the minister announced that the Mobile Dispensing Units (MDUs) have been scrapped and ration distribution is being reintroduced through traditional ration shops. He stated that this decision was made after recognising the hardships people faced under the MDU system. 'From now on, poor families will receive uninterrupted access to essential commodities. Ration goods will be available for 15 days each month through fair price shops. Special arrangements are being made to deliver supplies to the homes of persons with disabilities and the elderly aged above 65,' he said. The minister added that the government has launched this statewide initiative as a prestigious mission. He criticised the previous government for policy failures that disrupted the regular supply of rations to the poor, pointing out that MDU vans delivered ration goods only to limited points, forcing the elderly and the differently abled to struggle for access. 'This issue was seriously discussed in the Cabinet, leading to the decision to restore fair price shops. The Opposition is trying to mislead people with misinformation on this reform,' Durgesh said. He assured that issues surrounding ration card issuance are being addressed and that beneficiaries can now make corrections or modifications to their cards. He urged cooperation from officials, the public, and ration dealers to ensure the success of the new system. Strict action will be taken against dealers who misuse the rice meant for distribution, he warned. He also promised that the concerns of ration dealers would be resolved quickly and announced the establishment of a new stock point at Tanuku for dealers in Undrajavaram and Peravali mandals. The minister said that of the 3.4 lakh metric tonnes of paddy approved for procurement across East Godavari district, 1.2 lakh metric tonnes were procured from Nidamarru constituency alone. He said that high yields in some areas have left surplus paddy, prompting discussions with Civil Supplies Minister Nadendla Manohar to procure an additional 10,000 metric tonnes. Banking guarantee norms have also been eased for millers, he added. Despite his state wide ministerial responsibilities, Durgesh affirmed his continuous efforts to address local issues. He promised to remain accessible through the camp offices in Rajamahendravaram and Nidadavolu. Speaking at the event, district joint collector S Chinna Ramudu said that ration goods will be distributed to 5,64,994 cardholders through 870 fair price shops across the district. Former MLA and newly appointed Chairman of State Skill Development Corporation Burugupalli Sesharao, RDO Rani Susmitha, and Civil Supplies Officer MRR Prem Kumar also participated in the programme.

Minister alleges bid to create unrest ahead of PK film release

Rajamahendravaram: Tourism, Culture and Cinematography Minister Kandula Durgesh has strongly condemned efforts to stir controversy ahead of the release of Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan's film 'Hari Hara Veera Mallu'. Speaking to reporters on Monday, he alleged that certain individuals within the film industry were deliberately trying to create unrest dur-ing the film's release period. He questioned why stakeholders from the film industry didn't responded promptly to clarify the situation. The Minister claimed that the government has been consistently sup-portive of the industry, allowing ticket price revisions for new movie releases and taking proactive measures to address industry concerns. He criticised those, who claimed that the industry could resolve its is-sues without the government's intervention, calling such remarks as expression of arrogance. Minister Durgesh clarified that there will be no shutdown of theatres and assured that the State government is actively working to address the concerns of the industry. The Minister also lashed out at YSRCP leader and former minister Per-ni Nani for his comments regarding the ongoing film industry dispute, accusing him of speaking in an inhumane manner. He also accused YSRCP of exploiting individual deaths for political gain and described such behaviour as unethical and unacceptable. He clarified that the coalition government is ready to take legal action against any wrongdoing, but does not wish harm for anyone. Durgesh also announced that the Central government has approved the Detailed Project Report for the Akhanda Godavari Project. He said the project will be launched in the first week of June with the partici-pation of Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan and MP Daggubati Pu-randeswari. The project, valued at Rs 97 crore, has seen some tenders already finalised, and the government aims to complete it before the upcoming Godavari Pushkaralu. The Minister outlined that the government is working on a Public-Private Partnership model to enhance tourism infrastructure across the State. The Centre is supporting modernisation efforts at Surya-lanka Beach and the development of Gandikota Project. Plans are in place to set up tent accommodations at 21 prominent pilgrimage sites and introduce homestays in rural areas to promote local tourism. The government is also facilitating the construction of star hotels in Tirupati and Visakhapatnam, aiming to bring 50,000 tourist rooms in-to operation across the State. In addition, a private company Mega, has come forward to build two hotels near the Polavaram Project, the Minister explained.

Govt keen to address issues of film industry

Rajamahendravaram: Tourism, Culture, and Cinematography Minister Kandula Durgesh clarified that an official inquiry has been initiated under the leadership of the Principal Secretary of the Home Department to address concerns and make decisions that will benefit the film industry, exhibitors, distributors, and producers. Speaking to the media in Rajamahendravaram, Minister Durgesh explained that the coalition government is committed to extending full support to the Telugu film industry. He acknowledged recent reports suggesting a possible shutdown of movie theatres starting June 1 and said that the government is trying to understand the root causes behind this sudden development. Durgesh said that he had already discussed the issue with Home Secretary Kumar Vishwajeet and directed a thorough investigation into why this issue has emerged, who is fuelling it, and what exactly is happening. He expressed confidence that the facts will come to light through the inquiry. He said that under the leadership of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, the new government has begun a detailed assessment of all issues concerning the film sector. Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan had previously met industry stakeholders and assured them of prompt solutions. He reiterated the government's respect for the industry and openness to dialogue. Although relations between the film industry and the government have been positive so far, the minister expressed surprise at the sudden emergence of theatre shutdown plans. He questioned whether discussions were held with all stakeholders before such a decision was considered and asked what factors may have led to this drastic step. He particularly said the timing of the issue, pointing to the scheduled June 12 release of Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan's film Hari Hara Veera Mallu, suggesting the atmosphere surrounding the shutdown is questionable and potentially unwarranted. He said that regular interactions with producers are taking place to address concerns proactively. Minister Durgesh affirmed that the coalition government is introducing a new film policy to streamline permissions and reduce bureaucratic hurdles. He said that the policy will eliminate the need for repeated applications for each film and ensure a smoother process for producers.

Nidadavolu witnesses development worth Rs 105 Cr: Tourism minister

Rajamahendravaram: Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Cinematography Kandula Durgesh, announced that development works worth Rs 105.80 crore have been undertaken in Nidadavolu within just 11 months. Speaking at a meeting with municipal officials on Saturday, the minister expressed his commitment to transform Nidadavolu into one of the most developed towns in the state. He said that they are working towards making Nidadavolu a model town in all sectors. The goal is to ensure equal development for both urban and rural areas, Durgesh added. Of the Rs 105.80 crore, Rs 15.75 crore has been allocated from general municipal funds for 240 development projects. So far, 187 of these projects, costing Rs 8.12 crore, have been completed. Major initiatives include beautification, road construction, water supply enhancements, and waste management improvements. Durgesh noted the launch of the 'Good Morning Nidadavolu' programme starting June 1, where officials will address unresolved local issues through direct interaction with residents once a week. He also said that Rs 4.50 crore from the 15th Finance Commission has been secured to fund waste management, drinking water supply, and drain maintenance. Furthermore, Rs 83.82 crore has been secured for the town's water grid project under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme, ensuring a steady supply of Godavari waters to Nidadavolu. An additional Rs 1 crore from Rajamahendravaram Urban Development Authority (RUDA) is being utilised for the construction of a road connecting Ramadasu Street and U Shopping Complex. To enhance public safety, approximately 250 CCTV cameras will be installed across Nidadavolu. Durgesh mentioned that while CSR funds from ONGC and GAIL will be sought for this purpose, these organisations have already expressed their willingness to support the initiative. The minister also outlined plans to modernise the local hospital, upgrading it from a 30-bed to a 100-bed facility. A sports stadium will be established following Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu's approval. Durgesh criticised the previous YSRCP government, accusing it of delaying the distribution of TIDCO houses to beneficiaries. 'We have brought this issue to the attention of the Chief Minister, and the second phase of TIDCO houses will soon be handed over to beneficiaries,' he assured. In a significant boost to local tourism, Rs 3 crore will be invested to develop Nidadavolu as a tourist destination under the Akhanda Godavari Project. Plans include the introduction of boating facilities in the canal and the development of a cafeteria for tourists. Municipal Chairman Bhupati Adinarayana, Commissioner T Krishnaveni, and other municipal officials were present at the meeting.

The unsung heroes of Bollywood: Supporting roles are no longer just ‘support' — they are the new heroes of our stories

In the dazzling world of Bollywood, where stardom and celebrity often dominate headlines, it's easy to overlook the consistent, nuanced, and sometimes transformative work of supporting actors. Yet, scratch beneath the surface of any memorable film, and you'll find a character actor who anchored the story with authenticity, grace, and gravitas. These actors, often relegated to the background of red carpets and marquee posters, are the beating heart of storytelling. Their roles are not just supplementary—they are essential. Veteran actor Deepraj Rana , a stalwart of Hindi cinema and television since the late 1980s, puts it best: 'I've kept getting roles—not because of a 'breakthrough' moment but because people felt I could do justice to a character.' His journey, marked by powerful performances in films like Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster, Aarakshan, and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo , is not defined by stardom but by substance. He doesn't boast of a single defining moment; rather, his career is a testament to the enduring power of persistence and craft. 'From Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster to Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, work kept coming. Maybe people think I should've gone further, but I've lived my life, I've worked continuously, and I'm content,' Rana told ETimes. Supporting roles leave a lasting impression by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch Bitcoin và Ethereum - Không cần ví! IC Markets BẮT ĐẦU NGAY Undo The misconception that only lead actors drive a film is slowly, but steadily, being dismantled. Deepraj Rana recalls a one-scene role opposite Amitabh Bachchan in Aarakshan that left an impact. He also played the iconic freedom fighter Tatya Tope in Mangal Pandey, where a single performance carried historical and emotional weight. He shared a special memory from Sitaare Zameen Par: 'I had worked with Aamir Khan 20 years ago in Mangal Pandey. On the first day of shoot for Sitaare Zameen Par , he remembered me. That's what stays with you—when people remember your work.' Durgesh, another seasoned actor, has performed in over 45 supporting roles, including the widely appreciated Bhushan Sharma aka Banrakas in Panchayat. Yet, his journey remains an uphill battle. 'We do this out of love, but if production houses and the industry don't appreciate us or offer us work, how are we supposed to grow?' he asks, encapsulating the frustration of countless actors whose talent goes unrecognized. "When I came to Bombay, I had a significant role in Highway directed by Imtiaz Ali. The public appreciated it—I used to get noticed on the streets. But despite the praise, the industry never really offered me work,' he shared with us. Despite more than two decades in the industry and rigorous training through institutions like NSD and Repertory theatre, Durgesh admits that recognition is rare: 'In 25 years, only four people have taken my name or appreciated my work—Pankaj Tripathi, Nawazuddin Siddiqui , Adah Sharma, and Jeetu Bhaiyya (Jeetendra Kumar).' Chandan K Anand , who has made a lasting impression with his performances in movies like The Body, Gunjan Saxena and Fighter, added, 'Cinema is changing. Look at the web space, or films like Laapataa Ladies — every character has a story, every character contributes. Ravi Kishan's character was a hero. The girls were heroes. We're finally understanding that it's not just about one man carrying a film on his shoulders.' The quiet revolution of ensemble storytelling In recent years, films like Laapataa Ladies and shows like Mirzapur and Panchayat have shifted the cinematic landscape. These projects are ensemble-driven, where every character has an arc and every role carries weight. Deepraj Rana points to Sitaare Zameen Par, where the lead is a neurodivergent child, as an example of this evolution. 'Aamir plays a pivotal role, but the story belongs to the boy,' he says. When asked how does he view the evolution of roles over the decades? Rana reflected, 'Roles depend on the script. Where your character enters the story, what's happening at that moment—it all matters. I've been lucky to get roles where I could stand strong, even opposite stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Sunny Deol, Akshay Kumar, or Ajay Devgn. Those scenes had weight.' Actor Chandan K Anand echoes the same sentiment: 'We didn't even think of roles as 'supporting' or 'lead'. We just wanted to act.' Coming from a theatre background, Anand likens supporting roles to the 'masalas' in a pulao—the spices that make the dish flavorful. 'You see Paresh Rawal, Amrish Puri, Vijay Raaz... You know you're in for something special,' he told ETimes. Sajid Khan Discusses Bollywood's Hero Decline When asked if the industry has changed in its approach toward supporting actors, Durgesh was blunt: 'No. Nothing has changed. If your role stands out, 10 people will praise you. If it doesn't, no one notices. That's the reality.' He shared that only a few directors like Asit Kumarr Modi (Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah), Pulkit (with whom he worked on Do Bigha Zameen and The Great Indian Protector), and Deepak Kumar Mishra (TVF) have consistently given him opportunities. 'Because of Deepak and writer Chandan Kumar, my career found some direction. Otherwise, it's been a thankless journey.' The craft beyond the credit The brilliance of supporting actors lies in their ability to breathe life into fleeting moments. A single line, a glance, or a monologue can turn into a career-defining moment. When Sooraj Barjatya cast Deepraj in Prem Ratan Dhan Payo after seeing his work in Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster, it was a quiet nod to the idea that work speaks louder than fame. Chandan K Anand puts it poignantly: 'If there's no salt in a pulao, no one will eat it—no matter how much ghee you put in. That's the importance of these so-called supporting roles.' Durgesh spoke highly of fellow actors who rose through the ranks, including Pankaj Tripathi and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. 'Pankaj sir is like a grandfather figure. I've seen him rise from theatre to films. Nawazuddin's journey from small roles to lead actor is commendable. But personally, I've never had the chance to lead. I've been boxed into supporting roles.' Durgesh emphasized the significance of character roles: 'Even if a character has just one line in a play, it's equally important as the lead. But that's not how films work. The audience only sees the hero and heroine. That's the harsh truth.' Changing audience sensibilities Today's viewer is evolving. They're not just looking for glam and glitter but for storytelling that reflects reality. Characters like Pankaj Tripathi's in Gangs of Wasseypur or Vijay Raaz's in Chandu Champion resonate because they're rooted in truth. Audiences now crave performances that feel lived-in, not manufactured. So what has changed in the industry? Chandan states, 'Earlier, producers believed only 'big stars' could sell a movie. But now, even they are seeing that the economics don't add up. You can spend crores on a hero, or you can make 10 beautiful films with 10 solid actors. And audiences are ready for this shift.' He added that directors like Anurag Kashyap and Ram Gopal Varma have already paved the way by casting actors like Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Pankaj Tripathi, Vineet Kumar Singh — talents who weren't conventional stars but became household names through powerful performances. As he rightly puts it: 'The script should be the hero. If your story is strong, your characters — no matter how big or small — will shine. Cinema is no longer about glamour alone. Today's audience wants stories rooted in reality — stories that speak to their lives. Whether it's a 12th-grade student, a maid, or a truck driver — everyone has a story, and every story deserves to be told.' Toward a future of equal footing Cinema, like life, is not led by one hero alone. It's a collection of voices, journeys, and faces. The quiet coach, the overworked maid, the cynical uncle, the resilient teacher—these roles may not get top billing, but they reflect society more accurately than any larger-than-life protagonist ever could. The industry is at a crossroads. With the rise of streaming platforms, indie filmmaking, and an audience hungry for authenticity, there's never been a better time to celebrate the real heroes of storytelling—the supporting actors who carry the weight of emotion, humour, and humanity on their capable shoulders. As Deepraj Rana says, 'When directors like Sooraj ji or actors like Aamir remember you after decades, you feel seen. You feel validated.' It's high time the entire industry—and the viewing public—echoed that validation. Chandan adds, 'This is a golden time for storytelling. You look at series like Mirzapur, Superboys of Malegaon, Laapataa Ladies — these are ensemble projects where every character matters. That's the kind of cinema audiences are embracing now. The term 'supporting role' will soon become outdated. We are all actors. Every well-played character becomes the hero of their own arc.' Because in the end, a story isn't just about who stands at the center. It's about everyone who holds up the frame.
