Reliance Infrastructure Ltd , the flagship company of Anil Ambani's Reliance Group, is targeting Rs 3,000 crore from the export of 155 mm ammunition and aggregates by the end of financial year 2027, sources said. In the current year itself, the company is estimated to export Rs 1,500 crore of large calibre ammunition. According to the experts, the market size for restocking is estimated at Rs 4,00,000 crore. When contacted, a Reliance Infrastructure spokesperson confirmed that the ammunition export is the key priority of the company as it develops Dhirubhai Ambani Defence City (DADC) in Ratnagiri , Maharashtra, with a capital outlay of Rs 5,000 crore. The company has been allotted 1,000 acres of land in Watad Industrial Area of Ratnagiri, Maharashtra to develop DADC. It will be the largest greenfield project in the defence sector in India by any private sector company. The company is setting up an integrated explosives and ammunition manufacturing plant in DADC. Recently, Reliance Defence also announced a strategic partnership with Dusseldorf-based Rheinmetall AG . The collaboration between the companies will include the supply of explosives and propellants for medium and large caliber ammunition to Rheinmetall by Reliance. Furthermore, the two companies intend to engage in joint marketing activities for selected products and aim to further extend their cooperation based on future opportunities. In order to support this collaboration, Reliance Defence will set up a greenfield manufacturing facility in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. The manufacturing facility will have an annual capacity to produce up to 200,000 artillery shells, 10,000 tons of explosives and 2,000 tons of propellants. This new facility will help Reliance Defence achieve its objective of being amongst the top three defence exporters in the country.

The partnership's objective is to make India self-reliant in the field of defence production and make it among the world's major arms exporters. It will also create one more challenge for weak Pakistan, which has been dependent on China. 'Reliance Infrastructure Ltd-promoted Reliance Defence Ltd (Reliance Defence) and Dusseldorf-based Rheinmetall AG have agreed on a strategic partnership in the field of ammunition. An Agreement to this effect has now been signed by the representatives of both companies,' the Indian firm said in a statement. This is the third defence tie-up by the group after joint ventures with Dassault Aviation and Thales of France. 'The collaboration between the companies will include the supply of explosives and propellants for medium and large calibre ammunition to Rheinmetall by Reliance,' it said. Furthermore, the two companies intend to engage in joint marketing activities for selected products and may extend their cooperation based on future opportunities. The EUR 80 billion Rheinmetall AG excels in critical domains, such as armoured vehicles, infantry fighting vehicles, advanced air defence systems, and state-of-the-art ammunition technology. The strategic partnership will strengthen India's defence manufacturing capabilities aligning with the government's flagship 'Make in India' and 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiatives. It advances the vision to position India among the world's leading defence exporters. 'In order to support this collaboration, Reliance Defence Ltd will set up a greenfield manufacturing facility in the Watad Industrial Area of Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. The manufacturing facility, one of the largest in South Asia, will have an annual capacity to produce up to 2,00,000 artillery shells, 10,000 tonnes of explosives and 2,000 tonnes of propellants,' the statement said without giving details of investment to be made. This new facility will help Reliance Defence achieve its objective of being among the top three Defence exporters in the country. 'The cooperation gives Rheinmetall further access to important raw materials and secures not only its supply chains, but also the interest of its customers, but also creates further growth opportunities. In India, the new state-of-the-art facility will make a significant contribution to supplying the country's armed forces,' it said. The defence manufacturing complex will contribute to supporting India's ambitious defence export target of Rs 50,000 crore by 2029. New Delhi: Anil Ambani's Reliance Defence Ltd on Thursday announced a pact to supply explosives and artillery shells, among other ammunitions, to German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall AG. Reliance Defence will set up a greenfield plant in Maharashtra to manufacture and supply the ammunitions, it said in a statement. The partnership with Reliance Infrastructure-promoted Reliance Defence is expected to secure global supply chains and access to important raw materials for Rheinmetall, which manufactures artillery as well as armored vehicles and tanks, the statement said. 'This strategic partnership of Rheinmetall with Reliance Defence led by Anil Ambani's Reliance Group illustrates our strong commitment to partner with India under the strong leadership of Prime Minister Modi," said Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall AG. The new manufacturing facility in the Watad Industrial Area of Ratnagiri will have an annual capacity to produce up to 200,000 artillery shells, 10,000 tonnes of explosives and 2,000 tonnes of propellants. It will also make a significant contribution to supplying the country's armed forces, the company said. Dusseldorf-based Rheinmetall AG is a key manufacturer of loitering munitions, large-caliber weapons and ammunition, as well as propulsions systems for artillery applications. After two successful joint ventures with global majors, Dassault Aviation and Thales Group of France, this is the third significant international partnership for Reliance Defence, the company said. This comes at a time when Indian defence stocks have skyrocketed amid rising geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan. Mint reported on 20 May that Indian defence stocks such as Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE), Cochin Shipyard Ltd, Mishra Dhatu Nigam Ltd (MIDHANI), Paras Defence and Space Technologies Ltd, Data Patterns (India) Ltd, Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL), and Astra Microwave Products Ltd have seen sharp rallies, outperforming broader indices by a wide margin. In FY25, India's defence exports surged to a record high of ₹ 23,622 crore, marking a 12% increase over FY24, a defence ministry statement said on 1 April. the contribution of state-run defence firms to exports rose to ₹ 8,389 crore in FY25, up from ₹ 5,874 crore in the year prior.
