Toronto FC goalkeeper Sean Johnson sidelined as he goes through concussion protocol

TORONTO — Toronto FC will be without goalkeeper Sean Johnson when it visits the league-leading Philadelphia Union on Saturday. The 36-year-old 'keeper, one of the team's bright spots this season, is going through concussion protocol after taking a knock in training last week. "He should be fine by early next week," said Toronto coach Robin Fraser. Backup Luka Gavran will start with 20-year-old Adisa De Rosario, the son of Canada Soccer Hall of Famer Dwayne De Rosario, on the bench. --- Toronto general manager Jason Hernandez provided some details Friday on the departure of Trinidad and Tobago international Tyrese Spicer, traded to Orlando City last week for up to US$550,000 in general allocation money. At the time, Toronto said Spicer's camp had told the team "the player only wanted to continue with the club if certain contractual commitments and conditions were secured this summer," adding those terms were unacceptable. The 24-year-old Spicer, the first overall pick in the 20-24 MLS SuperDraft, was making a modest US$83,122 this season — the last on his contract — and wanted a lot more from TFC, it appears. Toronto was not inclined to give it to him and agreed to a move, despite holding club options on him for 2026 and 2027. "The reality is when you get a phone call on the player's behalf that the player needs four times or five times his deal by the end of the summer or he would like to be moved, it's not even a very difficult conversation at that point in time," said Hernandez. __ Hernandez says the future of forward Cassius Mailula should soon be made clear. The 24-year-old was sent out on loan to Moroccan club Wydad Athletic Club in April 2024 with the option of a permanent transfer for Mailula when the loan ended last month. Hernandez said Toronto had since given Mailula some time off. "We've been re-engaged with him and his representation about what steps are to come," said the GM. "So there's a likelihood I would say in the short-term of a full kind of resolution, whether that's the player reintegrating with us and returning to Toronto or finding a next opportunity that actually might make sense for both parties. "So that's ongoing and I think we'll have a resolution sooner rather than later." The South African international made just eight appearances for Toronto with two goals and one assist across all competitions since joining the team in July 2023 as part of Major League Soccer's under-22 initiative. Mailula joined Toronto FC from South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns FC. --- This report by The Canadian Press was first published Aug. 8, 2025 Neil Davidson, The Canadian Press

Young goalkeeper Adisa De Rosario climbing the ranks with Toronto FC

TORONTO – Just 20, Adisa De Rosario has spent half his life in Toronto FC colours. The young goalkeeper joined the TFC academy in 2015. Even then, he was no stranger to the club's training centre, having been part of its pre-academy. 'Safe to say, it's home,' De Rosario said. The son of Canada Soccer Hall of Famer Dwayne De Rosario, Adisa rose through the TFC ranks and signed a homegrown contract in February, becoming the 35th player in club history to join the first team from the academy. Third on the goalie depth chart behind veteran Sean Johnson and backup Luka Gavran, Adisa has dressed for the first team this season but is seeing action with TFC 2 in the MLS Next Pro league, where the six-foot-one 'keeper is tied for the lead in clean sheets with five this season. He has conceded just 22 goals in 17 MLS Next Pro outings this season. 'Good kid,' said Johnson, who ranks third on Major League Soccer's all-time list for regular-season minutes played at 38,136. 'He's definitely headed in the right direction. Definitely happy to have him as a part of the goalkeeping group. A good reflection on us all, to be honest. He's put the work in since Day 1.' Adisa had an elite sounding board in his father, who, like Toronto coach Robin Fraser, was named one of MLS's best 25 players all-time in 2020. Dwayne De Rosario, now a club ambassador with TFC, scored 104 goals and was a six-time member of the MLS Best XI. He was named the league's MVP and won the Golden Boot in 2011. A four-time MLS Cup winner, he was twice voted the championship game's MVP (2001, 2007). Father and son were both at the recent MLS all-star game in Austin, where Adisa participated in Goalie Wars, part of the MLS All-Star Skills Challenge. A social media video shows Dwayne taking shots on Adisa prior to the competition. 'That was edited,' Adisa said cheekily. 'You guys missed the first 50 (shots) that he missed.' While Adisa looks to stop goals, older brother Osaze is following in his father's footsteps by scoring them. The 24-year-old Seattle Sounders forward opened his MLS scoring account July 26 against Atlanta and scored again last Thursday in a Leagues Cup win over Mexico, marking the moment with his father's trademark 'shake and bake' celebration. 'He's doing great,' said Adisa. 'We keep in contact all the time,' he added. 'Before games, after games, we speak. He's my best friend. We talk all the time.' A third brother, 13-year-old Tinashe, is also a goalkeeper. Tinashe, then just three years old with a mop of curls, stole the show at his father's retirement news conference at BMO Field in June 2015 when he started exploring the microphone and tape recorders in front of him, as well as checking his dad's ear for lint before eventually asking for a snack. Daughter Asha is the oldest of DeRo's four kids. Adisa was a forward until he switched to goalkeeper at the age of eight or nine, to his father's initial dismay. 'At first, he wasn't a fan of it at all. He thought I was joking and told my coach 'Don't let him play (in goal). Keep him in the outfield,'' Adisa said. 'But it was something I really wanted to do … Once he saw I was having fun and enjoying myself, I guess he was OK with it. 'I'm sure that was a hard pill to swallow for him, with his goal-scoring self — me being on the opposite end of that.' Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Adisa wears No. 77, a nod to his dad, who wore both No. 14 and No. 7 during his MLS career. Born in San Jose while his father played for the San Jose Earthquakes, Adisa has had two loan stints in the Canadian Premier League, in 2022 with the Halifax Wanderers and in 2023 with York United. He also attended two Canadian under-20 camps under Mauro Biello in 2022. Signed through 2026 with club options for 2027 and 2028, Adisa is making US$97,235 this season. — This report by The Canadian Press was first published Aug. 5, 2025

Sounders sign F Osaze De Rosario

May 8 - The Seattle Sounders signed forward Osaze De Rosario through 2025 on Thursday with club options for 2026 and 2027. The 23-year-old Guyana international arrives from the Tacoma Defiance, where he leads MLS NEXT pro with eight goals through five matches. He also scored two goals in Tacoma's 2025 U.S. Open Cup run. De Rosario has appeared in two matches for the Sounders on short-term loans. "Osaze's path to the first team is another example of how our developmental system is designed to work," general manager and chief soccer officer Craig Waibel said. "Osaze has taken full advantage of his time with our staff with Defiance. He is currently performing at a high level and is showing the kind of professional growth we value. We believe he has the tools to continue to improve and to contribute in MLS. We're looking forward to seeing how he evolves within our environment." De Rosario is the son of MLS and Canada legend Dwayne De Rosario, a four-time MLS Cup champion and 2011 MLS MVP who scored 104 goals with five teams. --Field Level Media

Another De Rosario to wear Toronto FC first-team colours this season

TORONTO — Toronto FC will have another De Rosario wearing first-team colours this year. Goalkeeper Adisa De Rosario, the son of former TFC captain and Canada Soccer Hall of Famer Dwayne De Rosario, has signed a first-team contract as a homegrown player through 2026 with club options for 2027 and 2028. The 20-year-old De Rosario becomes the 35th player in club history to sign for the first team from the academy. The younger De Rosario, whose TFC 2 contract expired at the end of last year, will be behind starter Sean Jonson and Luka Gavran on the depth chart. "We're very excited to have Adisa as a part of the first-team roster," Toronto GM Jason Hernandez said in a statement. "He has worked extremely hard throughout his time in the academy and TFC II, and we're looking forward to continuing to provide opportunities for him to develop and grow." De Rosario has recorded 55 saves through 25 appearances since joining TFC II on March 23, 2023. He spent time on loan that year with York United FC of the Canadian Premier League, where he made four appearances. De Rosario joined the Toronto academy in 2015, playing across multiple age groups. In 2022, he signed a short-term development deal with the CPL's Halifax Wanderers, making his pro debut against Forge FC on Oct. 9, 2022. His older brother, Osaze De Rosario, joined the Tacoma Defiance, of the MLS Next Pro league from York last March. Their father was named to Major League Soccer's list of 'The 25 Greatest' in December 2020 as part of the league's 25th anniversary celebrations. Known as DeRo, he won the MLS Cup four times, twice earning MLS Cup MVP honours, and was the 2011 MLS MVP and MLS Golden Boot recipient. Dwayne De Rosario had two stints with Toronto (2008-10 and 2014), also playing for San Jose, Houston, the New York Red Bulls and D.C. United. He won 81 caps for Canada with 22 goals. He retired with 103 goals and 76 assists in 341 career MLS regular-season games. He remains a Toronto club ambassador. Adisa was born in San Jose when his father played for the San Jose Earthquakes. He was 10 when his father, then with TFC, announced his retirement in May 2015. --- This report by The Canadian Press was first published Feb. 7, 2025 Neil Davidson, The Canadian Press
