900 cases of milk donated to Feeding SD
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Milk is an essential part of the human diet, with it being a great source of calcium, vitamin D, and other nutrients. But when money gets tight, milk can be hard to afford. That's why a local milk business is partnering with a nonprofit to get milk on people's tables. Task force wants a cheaper plan for new men's prison Feeding South Dakota gets a lot of donations from people in the community. 'When you think of food drives, that maybe local places are having or local groups are having, a lot of times, you know, you think of shelf-stable items,' Senior Development Officer at Feeding SD, Susanne Gale, said. But one thing they don't see a lot of is milk, and lately it's gotten worse. 'With the recent cutbacks in the USDA, loads that we receive, we actually lost loads of milk,' CEO at Feeding SD, Lori Dykstra, said. Which is why Feeding South Dakota is thankful that Prairie Farms showed up today. 'We're donating a trailer load of 1%, half gallons that will be arriving here shortly. It will be 8,100 units of half-gallon milk to hand out to families that need the most,' General Manager at Prairie Farms, John Cooper, said. 'Milk is such an essential protein. And we want to make sure that we are giving foods to encourage a healthy diet and so that's why these types of donations are even more important to our families in need,' Dykstra said. But Prairie Farms is doing more than just donating this milk. 'For June National Dairy Month, when you donate to Feeding South Dakota, Prairie Farms is going to match that gift, doubling the impact that we have to allow access to everyone, for the wholesome goodness of dairy products,' Cooper said. 'Milk is one of those items that, when families are struggling to stretch their budget, that will sometimes give up. And so we want to make sure that we always try to have those products on hand,' Dykstra said. Making a difference one half-gallon at a time. Feeding South Dakota also decked out Bessie the cow in front of the Prairie Farms location in Sioux Falls. Click here for more information on doubling your donation. Could Trump's reconciliation bill impact SNAP benefits?
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — President Trump's reconciliation bill includes a list of campaign promises. One potential impact includes possible cuts to SNAP benefits. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, benefits food banks like Feeding South Dakota by lowering demand at their locations and getting more people to buy food directly from retailers. Feeding South Dakota CEO Lori Dykstra said President Trump's reconciliation bill could change some of that. 'We're hearing 10% of that cost could go back to our state, which could mean $18 million to our state budget, and I just don't know how the South Dakota state budget can sustain an $18 million increase,' Dykstra said. 'That could mean things like cuts to the benefits to the people who need it most.' Mitchell Mayor asks city to consider prison Rather than paying 10% of the cost as Dykstra mentioned, Representative Dusty Johnson's office said South Dakota would have to pay 5% of the cost. Feeding South Dakota said the impact would be significant for the state and the people they serve. 'For every SNAP dollar spent in our state, we know that that has $1.80 of economic benefit really from farm to the retailer, and so we know that that's important to our state,' Dykstra said. Feeding South Dakota said it's already feeling the strain. Cuts to CCC funding have cost the organization nearly 150,000 meals. 'That's the loss in food that we're seeing, and that's some of the best food that we get- fresh produce, things like ground beef and dairy products, those are all things that we need to make sure that our families who are hungry are getting nutritious options,' Lori Dykstra said. House Republicans are pushing to vote on the package as soon as tonight. Sioux Falls prepares for $25M loss with property tax reform Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Mother's Day: Free frozen custard for moms at Monroe Culver's
MONROE — Celebrate mom this Mother's Day with a free scoop of frozen custard with one topping. Culver's of Monroe, 1899 N. Telegraph Road, is offering the cool treat for moms of all ages. 'It's a promotion to celebrate all the moms in the community,' said Darian Dykstra, general manager. 'We invite moms to come in and get a free scoop of custard. We're just excited to celebrate moms and everything they do for their kids and our community.' Since opening in 2021, the local eatery, known for its butter burgers and fresh frozen custard, has been offering the free promotion on Mother's Day. The Sunday, May 11 event and custard are always popular with families, according to Dykstra. 'The fun thing about custard is that it is not an ice cream based solely on how we prepare it,' she said. 'It's premium ingredients. It's smooth and velvety unlike ice cream which has ice particles in it. We freeze it to a temperature where you don't get those ice particles so it's creamy versus an ice crystal crunch.' More: Mother's Day is May 11. Here are some gifts she'll love from local stores Dykstra said her crew is ready to serve the free frozen dessert. 'It's been pretty big since it started but there's always more we can do to promote it,' she said. 'We're really excited to reach out to as many moms as we can to thank them for all they do for their kids.' — Contact reporter Lisa Vidaurri-Bowling at lvidaurribowling@ This article originally appeared on The Monroe News: Mother's Day: Free frozen custard for moms at Culver's of Monroe

Michigan State women's basketball adding Montana State transfer Marah Dykstra
Michigan State women's basketball adding Montana State transfer Marah Dykstra Michigan State women's basketball continues to reload through the transfer portal, where they have already added Purdue transfer Rashunda Jones and Arizona State leading scorer Jalyn Brown. Dykstra's putback at buzzer gives Montana State women a victory over Montana to claim Big Sky title
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Marah Dykstra put back her own miss just before the final buzzer to give top-seeded Montana State a 58-57 victory over No. 6 seed Montana on Wednesday to claim the Big Sky Tournament championship. Montana State (30-3) won its second conference tournament title in four years and the fourth in program history. Montana (14-18) was in the title game for the first time since 2015. Dykstra gave Montana State a 56-52 lead with 2:34 remaining and neither team scored until freshman Avery Waddington made a driving layup with 30.8 seconds left to get Montana within two points. MJ Bruno poked it away from Montana State point guard with 24 seconds left and Mack Konig dribbled down the clock for Montana before finding Dani Bartsch for a wide open 3-pointer to give the Lady Griz a one-point lead with 7.9 seconds left. Dykstra came off a high screen for a contested left-handed layup that did not hit the rim, but it bounced right back to her off the backboard and she narrowly beat the buzzer to win it. Esmeralda Morales finished with 25 points to lead Montana State. Waddington had 15 points and eight rebounds, Konig added 13 points and eight assists, and Bruno scored 11 for Montana. Tyler McCliment-Call sank a 3-pointer from the corner with 6:53 remaining in the fourth to give Montana its first lead, 50-49, since it was 21-19. Montana State and Montana have met six times in Big Sky Tournament championship game, with Montana winning in 1991, '95, '97, '08. The Bobcats' only other win over the Lady Griz was in 1993. ___
