The abandoned baby. LAHAD DATU (July 21): Police have detained a woman suspected of abandoning her newborn baby boy in Kampung Burung, Jalan Bakawali, here last Friday. Lahad Datu District Police Chief ACP Dzulbaharin Ismail said the 30-year-old woman was detained at the Lahad Datu District Police Headquarters yesterday after giving her statement. 'Initial investigations found that the woman gave birth at home and placed her baby outside the house in a panic after delivering,' he said when contacted here today. Dzulbaharin stated the case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for abandoning a child, which carries a penalty of up to seven years' imprisonment, or a fine, or both, if convicted. Last Friday, media reported that a baby boy was found by a member of the public wrapped in cloth in front of a house in the village at 3:06 a.m. The baby was sent to Lahad Datu Hospital for further treatment but died at 7:02 p.m. due to premature birth.

KOTA KINABALU: A 30-year-old local woman has been arrested on suspicion of abandoning her newborn baby boy who subsequently died at Kampung Burung in Lahad Datu on July 18. Lahad Datu district police chief Asst Comm Dzulbaharin Ismail said that police arrested a woman on Sunday (July 20) outside a house in the village. "The suspect admitted to giving birth to the baby in question at her home and leaving it outside the house in Kampung Burung, Jalan Bakawali," he said, adding that they would seek to have the woman remanded. He said the case was being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for abandoning a baby. "If found guilty, she can be sentenced to up to seven years in prison, or a fine, or both," he said. The baby boy was found wrapped in cloth in front of a house of the public at 3.06 am on Friday (July 18). The baby, who was still alive then, was sent to Lahad Datu Hospital for treatment. However, the baby died at 7.02pm the same day due to complications from its premature birth.

LAHAD DATU: A newborn baby boy was abandoned in front of a house in Kampung Burung, Jalan Bakawali here early this morning. Lahad Datu district police chief ACP Dzulbaharin Ismail said the baby was found by a passerby at 3.06am and was sent to the hospital for further treatment. "The baby is currently in stable condition, the investigation is ongoing to track those responsible," he said in a statement here today, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for baby dumping. Meanwhile, he said the police arrested a woman, 21, at a hotel here at 10.30pm yesterday for offering sex services through Michat with payments between RM250 to RM350, along with a man, 24, along Lorong Lahad Datu Square 1 at 2.30pm for suspected online gambling activities. — BERNAMA
