Dad, 28, died trying to save his brother from burning home after e-bike battery caught fire

The e-bike burst into flames after its battery 'catastrophically failed' while charging overnight FATAL INFERNO Dad, 28, died trying to save his brother from burning home after e-bike battery caught fire Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A MAN died while trying to save his brother from his burning home after an e-bike fire set the property ablaze. An inquest into his death heard how he rushed to alert his mum and son in the upstairs bedroom as soon as he spotted the fire. Despite all three leaving the home through the front door, they believed Mohsin's brother was still trapped inside. Bravely, Mohsin rushed inside to try and save him - not realising his brother had managed to escape by jumping from the upstairs bedroom window. When Mohsin's brother then tried to turn around to rescue Mohsin, he was forced back by toxic smoke and intense flames. The 28-year-old was then found by the fire service in the rear upstairs bedroom. After initially thinking he was just unresponsive, fire crews later discovered he had already died by the time they arrived. Coroner Martin Fleming concluded Mohsin died from the effects of fire - saying it had most likely been started by the "catastrophic failure" of the e-bike battery. In a Prevention of Future Deaths report, he said: "On December 2, 2023, Mohsin Janjua died from the inhalation of products of combustion in a house fire at his home address [in] Bradford. "Unknown to him, he had previously purchased an unsafe lithium battery on the internet in order to convert his bicycle with other modifiable parts to an E-bike, which he left on charge overnight in his living room. "It is found more likely than not that the fire was caused by a catastrophic failure of the ion lithium battery." More to follow... Unleashing Growth On Conservation Land

Rt Hon Christopher Luxon Prime Minister Minister of Conservation Unleashing economic growth on one third of New Zealand's land will create jobs and increase wages across the country, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Conservation Minister Tama Potaka announced at the National Party Conference in Christchurch today. 'The Department of Conservation manages huge tracts of New Zealand, from the most pristine parts of our National Parks and the Great Walks to areas of grassland used for grazing,' Mr Luxon says. 'Many New Zealanders already run outstanding businesses on the conservation estate – from guided walks and ski fields, to filming documentaries, grazing sheep and cattle, or hosting concerts and building cell phone towers. 'But to do any of that, you need a concession – and the concessions regime is totally broken, often taking years to obtain or renew and leaving businesses in a cycle of bureaucratic limbo. 'Outdated rules mean we've got examples of modern E-bike users being turned away from potential touring opportunities because they have to be considered as proper vehicles. And tourism on the Routeburn is being held up because the trail crosses artificial boundaries, with different rules and different limits. 'So, in the spirit of saying yes to more jobs, more growth, and higher wages, today I can make two announcements. 'First, we're going to fix the Conservation Act to unleash a fresh wave of concessions – like tourism, agriculture, and infrastructure, in locations where that makes sense. 'At the same time, sites that are truly special to New Zealanders should be protected so we are giving DOC more support by introducing a charge for foreign visitors to access high volume sites,' Mr Luxon says. Tama Potaka says this will initially involve looking at four locations – Cathedral Cove / Te Whanganui-a-Hei, Tongariro Crossing, Milford Track, and Aoraki Mount Cook – where foreigners often make up 80 per cent of all visitors. 'Tourists make a massive contribution to our economy, and no one wants that to change. But I have heard many times from friends visiting from overseas their shock that they can visit some of the most beautiful places in the world for free. 'It's only fair that at these special locations, foreign visitors make an additional contribution of between $20 and $40 per person. 'For the conservation estate that will mean up to $62 million per year in revenue, which will be directly re-invested into those same areas, so we can keep investing in the sites that underpin so much of our tourism sector,' Mr Potaka says. Mr Luxon says, at the same time, there will be no charge for New Zealanders to access the conservation estate. 'It's our collective inheritance and Kiwis shouldn't have to pay to see it. 'If we're serious about keeping Kiwis at home, creating jobs, and increasing wages for all New Zealanders, we can't afford to keep saying no to every opportunity that comes our way,' Mr Luxon says.

The proposals for 3 South Clerk Street were submitted by a Mr Kamran in May and approved by the council's planning department on July 23. The application site is a vacant mid-terrace ground floor commercial unit within a four-storey row of tenements, situated in the Southside Conservation Area. The plans include an external flue on the rear elevation that would terminate above eaves level. 'The proposals have regard to the desirability of preserving or enhancing the character or appearance of the conservation area and are acceptable. It is not anticipated that the proposal would lead to an unreasonable impact upon residential amenity. 'In terms of the proposed use itself, this would represent a suitable commercial addition to the application site and would contribute towards the vitality and vibrancy of the mixed-use nature of the surrounding area.' The applicant now has three years to carry out the needed change of use works at 3 South Clerk Street.

Bike taxis are not luxury but necessity to ease traffic congestion, operators tell Karnataka high court

Bengaluru: The Bike Taxi Welfare Association argued on Wednesday that bike taxis are not a luxury, but a necessity in easing traffic congestion. The state govt's decision to ban the services affected 6.5 lakh bike taxis and 6 lakh dependent families. Senior advocate Shashank Garg, appearing on behalf of the association, submitted that the drivers had taken loans and there are no alternative employment opportunities. They put hard-earned money into buying vehicles. He suggested some interim arrangement could be made to enable the vehicles to ply by imposing conditions for the safety of drivers and passengers. Dwelling upon the ban, Garg submitted that there is a complete policy vacuum and pointed out that the E-bike rules of 2021 completely debunk the expert committee report of 2019, relied on by the state govt to ban bike taxis, as the E-taxi policy clearly spells out last-mile connectivity. He added the expert committee only considered and confined itself to Bengaluru city before making their recommendation for imposing a ban. He further claimed the ban was imposed more to benefit the autorickshaw drivers and termed it a political issue. Referring to the ban, he submitted that the state govt cannot do it by an executive action. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Top 5 Dividend Stocks for May 2025 Seeking Alpha Read More Undo An executive action cannot supplant; it can only supplement. A transport vehicle with a contract carriage permit entitles it to be used as a taxi. The state created a scenario of impossibility. The state is duty-bound to give registration and permit. It was that day the state created a scenario contrary to judgements of the SC and the division bench of this court, Dhyan Chinnappa further added. "The state cannot complain that bike taxis are causing difficulties in Karnataka. We have traffic in this city because people from all over come here and stay. Population growth is an indicator of a growing economy," he further submitted. Meanwhile, a division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice V Kameshwar Rao and CM Joshi adjourned the hearing to next Wednesday, i.e., July 2. Uber India Systems, ANI Technologies Private Ltd, and Roppen Transportation Services Pvt Ltd (all aggregators), along with others, have challenged the single bench's order. On April 2, 2025, a single bench disposed of their petitions, referring to an expert committee report of 2019, which considered the impact of bike taxis on traffic and safety. "Unless the state govt notifies relevant guidelines under Section 93 of Motor Vehicles Act and the rules framed thereunder, the petitioners cannot operate bike taxi services, and no directions can be issued to the state govt to consider their applications seeking the grant of aggregator permits/licences," the single bench said in its order. It is always open to the state govt to take measures, i.e., framing guidelines in relation to bike taxi services, the order further stated, while granting six weeks' time to cease operations. The said period was further extended until June 15 by another order.
