India hands over first batch of 10 electric buses to Mauritius
Synopsis India strengthens its green partnership with Mauritius by donating the first batch of ten electric buses to support the island nation's transition to cleaner public transport. This handover, part of an Enhanced Strategic Partnership, highlights India's commitment to Mauritius's sustainable development goals and shared vision for a climate-resilient future. The initiative underscores the enduring relationship between the two countries. In a major step forward in strengthening 'green partnership' between India and Mauritius and as part of our shared vision for a more sustainable and climate-resilient future, the High Commissioner of India to Mauritius, Anurag Srivastava officially handed over the first batch of tenelectric buses (E-buses) to the Prime Minister Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam on Wednesday. This event marks a significant milestone in our bilateral partnership and reaffirms the deep-rooted and people-centric partnership between the two countries. This project supports Mauritius's national objective of reducing carbon emissions and contributes to its transition toward cleaner and more efficient public transport. In his remarks, High Commissioner recalled the elevation of bilateral ties to an Enhanced Strategic Partnershipduring the historic visit of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in March 2025, and highlighted green mobility as a key pillar of this partnership. The High Commissioner also underlined India's broader support for Mauritius's green transition, highlighting completed project such an 8 MW solar PV farm at Henrietta, and ongoing Community Projects such as solar street lighting, and a community solar farm in High Commissioner conveyed sincere gratitude to Prime Minister Ramgoolam for his continued support and expressed appreciation for the support of the Government of Mauritius in implementing the project. Reaffirming India's commitment to Mauritius's development aspirations, he thanked all stakeholders for their collaboration and expressed hope that the electric buses would serve as moving symbols of the two nations' shared commitment to a cleaner, greener in his remarks recalled the historic State Visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Mauritius in March 2025 and expressed deep appreciation for Government of India's donation of the first batch of 10 electric buses to the National Transport Corporation (NTC), calling it a testimony to the enduring and special India–Mauritius relationship. He highlighted India's consistent development support, especially in high-profile infrastructure projects, and described the E-bus initiative as a reflection of the shared commitment to sustainability and innovation. The Prime Minister underscored the significance of clean public transport in Mauritius's broader development agenda, noting its environmental and health benefits, potential to reduce emissions, and alignment with the government's strategy to modernise the country and achieve climate targets. He welcomed India's role as a strategic partner in key future-oriented sectors such as AI, the blue economy, food and maritime security, and renewable energy. Emphasising the economic and technological benefits of electric mobility, he thanked all stakeholders involved and formally accepted the first 10 E-buses on behalf of the people of Mauritius. NMC to deploy 850 E-buses in two years
Nagpur: In a major push for sustainable public transport, Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) will introduce 850 electric buses (E-buses) over the next two years, replacing the ageing diesel fleet. The expansion will also include a dedicated e-bus service to and from Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, aimed at providing seamless connectivity for air travellers. Out of the proposed 850 e-buses, 30 were already procured under the first phase with funding of Rs137 crore sanctioned by the state govt in April 2023, following a 2023 budget announcement by then deputy chief minister and current CM Devendra Fadnavis. These 30 e-buses will be launched on new routes from July 1, with route finalisation underway. As of now, NMC operates 445 city buses, including 214 e-buses. The number will gradually increase with the addition of 230 nine-metre and 250 twelve-metre electric buses. The transformation comes as the NMC begins decommissioning 76 remaining diesel buses — part of a 240-bus fleet purchased in 2009 under JNNURM. All diesel buses are to be phased out by December 2025. Transport manager Vinod Jadhav said operating costs are expected to drop by up to 40%, making the transition both environmentally and economically beneficial. He added that airport routes will be finalised based on flight timings to ensure reliable and affordable last-mile connectivity. With 1.4 lakh daily commuters, NMC also plans to revise existing routes and introduce new ones to enhance public transport coverage.
