Mohali: Retd Colonel walking his dog robbed at gunpoint

A retired army officer was robbed at gunpoint in Aerocity Block-C while walking his dog, with the robbers making off with his gold bracelet and Apple iPhone. The IT City police registered a robbery case under relevant sections of BNS, and under Sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act for use of illegal firearms. (HT photo for representation) While the incident occurred on July 20, police lodged an FIR on July 29 after conducting an investigation, a senior police officer said. The victim, Col Gurjeet Singh (retd), is in-charge of Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS) at Fatehgarh Sahib. On July 20, he was out walking his dog around 6.30 pm, when a black Honda City stopped near him, he told police. A young man stepped out from the driver's side and asked for directions to an immigration agent's residence. While conversing, the man suddenly pulled out a pistol and demanded his gold bracelet and iPhone, Singh alleged. Two turbaned men, aged around 25-26, remained seated in the car. Fearing for his life, Singh said, he handed over both items, after which the robbers fled towards Amity University. Acting swiftly, he returned home and used his daughter's iPhone to trace the stolen device. The iPhone was later found dumped in roadside bushes around 2 km away. Singh reported that the robbers' car had 'MH' on the front number plate. The rest of the plate was obscured with mud, apparently to prevent identification. The car's dashboard bore two small United Kingdom flags. According to Singh, the same car had earlier passed by him around 6 pm on the street and returned after half an hour. He alleged that the same car was involved in a similar robbery on July 9, when Hardeep Singh, another resident of Aerocity Block-D, was robbed at gunpoint, also while walking his dog. Police are investigating the possible connection between the two incidents. The IT City police registered a robbery case under relevant sections of BNS, and under Sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act for use of illegal firearms. Police are analysing CCTV footage from the area to identify the culprits.

Kargil Vijay Diwas: Uttarakhand CM Triples Ex-Gratia For ‘Param Vir Chakra' Awardees To Rs 1.5 Crore

Calling the move a 'symbol of unwavering respect for valour,' CM Dhami stated that Uttarakhand is deeply committed to the honour, welfare, and dignity of soldiers, ex-servicemen, and families of martyrs. The announcement came via a post on the social media platform 'X', where the Chief Minister expressed both gratitude and resolve on behalf of the state. 'The ex gratia given to Param Vir Chakra awardees has been increased from Rs 50 lakh to Rs 1.5 crore. This is a symbol of our government's unwavering faith in honouring bravery,' wrote CM Dhami in a post. Paying homage to the brave soldiers who laid down their lives in the 1999 Kargil War, CM Dhami attended a wreath-laying ceremony at Gandhi Park in Dehradun. The event was marked by emotional tributes, floral offerings, and public gratitude to the families of fallen soldiers. The Chief Minister saluted the indomitable spirit of the Indian Armed Forces, stating: 'Kargil Vijay Diwas is not just the celebration of a military victory; it is the immortal saga of sacrifice, duty, and national pride that can never be forgotten.' Dhami, accompanied by Soldier Welfare Minister Ganesh Joshi, also announced the construction of two key facilities to support the welfare of servicemen: an ECHS (Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme) centre and rest house in Kaleshwar (Chamoli district), and a Sainik Rest House in Nainital. In another message on social media, the Chief Minister highlighted India's growing military strength under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Referring to key moments in recent military history—including the surgical strikes post-Uri, air strikes after Pulwama, and the recent Operation Sindoor—Dhami said India has made it clear that any threat to its people will be met with decisive action. 'A clear message has been given: Whoever dares to harm the dignity of our sisters and daughters will face complete destruction,' he wrote. The event also saw the felicitation of ex-servicemen and families of martyrs, where CM Dhami personally honoured them with shawls and mementoes. The programme, organised by the Soldier Welfare Department, was attended by several dignitaries, including MP Naresh Bansal and local MLAs. Uttarakhand, often called the 'land of the brave', lost 75 sons in the Kargil War, which lasted over 60 days and ended on July 26, 1999, with a resounding victory for India. 527 Indian soldiers laid down their lives in the battle, making it one of the most poignant chapters in the nation's military history.

Ex-servicemen protest for better healthcare under CGHS

Mysuru: Members of the Mysuru Ex-Servicemen Movement will commemorate Kargil Vijay Diwas by paying homage to the martyrs at Gandhi Square on July 26. This will be followed by a black badge protest to demand better healthcare facilities under the Central Govt Health Scheme (CGHS). Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Prince Anthony, President of the association, announced that ex-servicemen from Mysuru, Chamarajanagar, Kodagu, and Mandya districts will take part in the symbolic protest. "This is the first time we are staging a protest. We are forced to raise our voices as repeated appeals were ignored. Many multi-specialty hospitals continue to deny treatment to ex-servicemen and their families under CGHS and ECHS (Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme)," he said. Most veterans are financially burdened and depend on small jobs after retirement. Many suffer from chronic illnesses like respiratory and cardiac conditions, yet are denied access to specialised care, he said. He also noted that several prominent hospitals in Mysuru have outright refused to join the CGHS/ECHS panel, pushing the veterans to the brink. "We are not seeking privilege, only the rightful support that was promised to us. " Vivekananda Naidu, Kishore Kadam, Ramnarayan, Yoganna, and Sridhar were also present.
