Palakkad railway officials to pre-commission jumbo intrusion system before July 30

COIMBATORE: As part of ensuring the safety of wild elephants, Palakkad railway officials said they have decided to pre-commission the activities of Elephant Intrusion Detection System (EIDS) in the Kottekkad-Madukkarai stretch before July 30. Kottekkad and Madukkarai share borders with Kerala and Tamil Nadu and are vulnerable to wild elephant movement. In this regard, the Palakkad Division is implementing EIDS, which is aimed at preventing elephant intrusions and enhancing the safety of wildlife and train operations. 'It integrates an optical fibre-based sensing network with artificial intelligence-driven analytical modules to detect the presence and movement of elephants in real time. Installation of the system has been completed on both A Line and B Line. At present, signal validation, fine-tuning, and systematic reduction of unconfirmed (spurious) alarms are in progress. We have targeted pre-commissioning activities for completion by July 30,' said a railway official. Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Palakkad Division, Arun Kumar Chaturvedi, inspected the ongoing implementation of the EIDS in the Kottekkad-Madukkarai stretch on Saturday. As per a release from Palakkad Railway Division, verified alerts will be relayed without delay to the station masters of stations concerned, the Divisional Control Office, Palakkad Division, level crossings between stations, and locomotive pilots via dedicated display and alert interfaces, enabling timely operational responses to avert incidents.

Palakkad DRM inspects elephant intrusion detection system implementation

The Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Palakkad Division, Arun Kumar Chaturvedi, inspected the ongoing implementation of the elephant intrusion detection system (EIDS) in the Kottekkad – Madukkarai section, a vulnerable stretch spanning Kerala and Tamil Nadu that has recorded wild elephant movements onto railway tracks. The EIDS is an initiative of Palakkad Division, Southern Railway, aimed at preventing elephant intrusions and enhancing the safety of both wildlife and train operations. It integrates an optical fibre–based sensing network with artificial intelligence–driven analytical modules to detect the presence and movement of elephants in real time. The system covers all identified elephant corridors along both the A and B lines of the section. Installation of the system has been completed on both the A Line and the B Line. At present, signal validation, fine‑tuning, and systematic reduction of unconfirmed (spurious) alarms are in progress. Pre-commissioning activities are targeted for completion by July 30. Using distributed acoustic sensing, sensors along the tracks capture vibration signatures (such as characteristic elephant footfall patterns) and relay data to the Distributed Acoustic Sensing unit located at Walayar. The AI engine and reference databases then localise any confirmed elephant presence to the exact kilometre. Verified alerts will be relayed without delay to the Station Masters of stations concerned, Divisional Control Office, Palakkad Division, any level crossings between the stations, and locomotive pilots via dedicated display and alert interfaces, enabling timely operational responses to avert incidents. The estimated project cost is ₹15.42 crore, fully funded by the Railways. During the visit, the DRM also inspected protection measures in the section, including solar fencing, rail fencing, clearance of vegetation on both sides of the track, and the functioning of railway‑constructed elephant underpasses.

AI-based Intrusion Detection System to be installed to protect elephants from train accidents in Jharkhand

RANCH: Chakradharpur (CKP) Division under South Eastern Railway is all set to install an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based Elephant Intrusion Detection System (EIDS) soon to prevent elephants from being mowed down by the speeding trains in Jharkhand. The Intrusion Detection System, for which a successful trail was completed recently along the Barabamboo-Chakradharpur-Lotapahar section, detects the presence of elephants close to the rail track and informs the loco pilots on time so that they can 'slow down' the speeding train. Two elephants, Jyoti and Sonu, were arranged from 'Vantara' for the testing to assess the impact of EIDS. The system will operate through fibre optics and sensors. This step will prove to be very crucial in the Kolhan region, where a large number of elephants cross railway tracks regularly and many of them are hit by trains and killed. The system has been developed by Indian Railways in association with the Forest Department. The railway officials have identified such spots where elephants move frequently and will install the system at such places. According to Railway officials, the system works within a radius of 30 meters on both sides of the railway track. When a herd of elephants comes within the radius, the system immediately sends an alert to the nearest station master. 'The station master will inform the train driver through the wireless system, after which the speed of the train is slowed down,' said Senior DCM Adiyta Kumar Chaudhary.

SER to use AI-based system to prevent elephant-train collisions

Rourkela: The South Eastern Railway's Chakradharpur division will implement an Artificial Intelligence-based elephant intrusion detection system (EIDS) to prevent train accidents involving the animals on railway tracks. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The system, successfully tested on June 15 and 16 along the Barabamboo-Chakradharpur-Lotapahar section, will be installed in elephant corridors like Jareikela, Bhalulata, Barsuan and Bimlagarh areas. "The testing was conducted by different firms and was successful. The system, offering the best coverage for elephant protection, will be selected for installation from among the prospective bidders. This may happen within the next few months," A K Choudhury, senior divisional commercial manager of Chakradharpur, said. EIDS employs a combination of pressure wave sensors, optical fibre cables and AI algorithms to detect approaching elephants. When elephants are detected near the tracks, the system automatically alerts railway officials, allowing them to direct approaching trains to either slow down or stop, preventing potential collisions. For the trial run, two elephants from Vantara, the wildlife rescue in Gujarat, were brought to Chakradharpur. The testing was conducted under the supervision of railway officials from the Chakradharpur division.
