Colombia's Olímpica picks Toshiba to optimise in-store experience

Colombian supermarket chain Olímpica has chosen Toshiba's technology solutions to upgrade and refine the shopping experience within its stores. The Latin American retailer will integrate the complete ELERA Security Suite from Toshiba to mitigate losses and augment store security using advanced AI for image recognition and behaviour analysis at the point of sale. Olímpica will also introduce Toshiba's self-checkout systems along with advanced security measures aimed at increasing operational effectiveness and providing customers with a smooth shopping journey. Olímpica IT manager Omar Villamil stated: "Olímpica is revolutionising stores by partnering with Toshiba for state-of-the-art technology, expert consulting and comprehensive support at every stage of implementation. 'With Toshiba's self-checkout systems, we aim to enrich our customers' shopping experience by offering modern and efficient payment alternatives, including cash, cards or electronic methods like QR codes. We are rolling out this solution to more stores nationwide, re-inforcing our innovation strategy to continue enhancing the customer experience without compromising service quality." Toshiba has maintained a trusted relationship with Olímpica over many years, collaborating closely to understand the retailer's requirements and deliver customised solutions that streamline store functions and foster customer interaction while ensuring smooth integration with existing systems. Olímpica's initiative to improve customer service includes efforts to decrease waiting times and transform checkout operations. The ELERA Security Suite employs advanced AI and computer vision technologies to increase scanning precision, limit manual input and curtail losses through integrated loss prevention at self-checkout stations. These advancements refine checkout efficiency and enable store personnel to concentrate on delivering superior customer service. Toshiba global commerce solutions sales vice-president Manuel Medecigo stated: "By implementing Toshiba's self-checkout and ELERA Security Suite, Olímpica can optimise customer flow, enhance payment accuracy and deliver a faster experience. "The partnership highlights our commitment to supporting retailers with innovative, scaleable, customised technologies that drive long-term success." In February 2025, Chilean supermarket chain Cugat integrated the same Toshiba self-checkout systems into its retail operations.
