State Education Department releases preliminary assessment results
Aug. 12—MASSENA — The state Education Department has released the preliminary results of 2024-25 state assessments to local school districts for verification before they're finalized in September.
"The data released by the Department is intended to provide parents and families with their students' assessment results and inform instructional decisions and individualized learning plans for students during the 2025-26 school year. The data are considered preliminary until they undergo the local district review and verification process, which will close on September 3, 2025," SED officials said in a news release.
They said the data is subject to change after the local review and verification period has closed and statewide quality checks have been completed.
Students in grades three through eight sit for the English Language Arts and math assessments, while students in grades five and eight take the science assessment.
Individual district results are not available until after the local district review and verification process. But, SED officials have released statewide data indicating preliminary proficiency numbers in 2024-25 compared to final proficiency numbers in 2023-24.
In all grades except one (grade seven math), preliminary 2024-25 numbers show students exceeding or equaling the final 2023-24 results.

Grade 3: 43% 2023-24; 54% 2024-25

Grade 6: 44% 2023-24; 51% 2024-25
Grade 7: 50% 2023-24; 51% 2024-25
Grade 8: 52% 2023-24; 52% 2024-25
Grades 3-8: 46% 2023-24; 53% 2024-25
MATHEMATICS
Grade 3: 54% 2023-24; 60% 2024-25
Grade 4: 58% 2023-24; 59% 2024-25
Grade 5: 49% 2023-24; 54% 2024-25
Grade 6: 51% 2023-24; 51% 2024-25
Grade 7: 57% 2023-24; 56% 2024-25
Grade 8: 41% 2023-24; 47% 2024-25
Grades 3-8: 52% 2023-24; 55% 2024-25
SCIENCE
Grade 5: 35% 2023-24; 45% 2024-25
Grade 8: 34% 2023-24; 44% 2024-25
Grades 5 & 8: 35% 2023-24; 44% 2024-25
Following the verification period, SED will update assessment reports based on the data certified by schools and districts.
"Our goal is to provide teachers, administrators, and parents with as much information as possible about their students' performance and make it available as quickly as possible to improve classroom instruction. The public release of all final state assessment data is anticipated for early November," they said.
The annual assessments, which are required by the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), are designed to measure how well students are mastering the state's learning standards that guide classroom instruction "and are a valuable tool to help ensure students have the supports needed to succeed," SED officials said.
