England bowlers, Gus Atkinson, Josh Tongue, and Jamie Overton, dominated the proceedings, and bundled out India at a modest total of 224 in the first innings. In response, England got the best possible start as openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett put on almost a century run stand. Despite the exploits by the front two, England were bundled out at 247 in the first innings. India had a much better opting in the second innings. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal smashed a stellar century to put India in the driver's seat. Nightwatchman Akash Deep, rendered Jaiswal the ideal support from the other end and played a key innings of 66 runs. Following that, the ever-consistent Ravindra Jadeja proved to be impactful once again. He scored a half-century in his final stint with the bat this series. They added 195 runs for the fourth wicket, which almost ensured England's victory. Needless to state that both batters completed their respective centuries. However, a twist of fate occurred in the final phase of the Day 4. Just when England looked unstoppable, Akash Deep got the wicket of Harry Brook and brought India back. The Indian bowlers then gained further momentum by removing Jacob Bethell and Joe Root in quick succession. India had England on the ropes in the final hour of the day, but rain gods rescued England and pushed the Test to the fifth and final day. India Pacer In Heated Spat With Joe Root As Tempers Flare At The Oval

England batter Joe Root and Indian cricket team fast bowler Prasidh Krishna got into a heated verbal spat during Day 2 of the fifth Test match at The Oval on Friday. Tempers flared during the second session of the day as the two cricketers got into a war of words. Root was not happy with Prasidh saying something to him and he walked down the pitch to confront the pacer. Root slammed a boundary on the very next delivery and more words were exchanged with Prasidh. The on-field umpires had to get involved and after a chat with both cricketers, the situation was diffused. 'It's highly unusual to see Joe Root as animated as he was in that moment. Quite a cheery soul, but not on that occasion,' former England captain Michael Atherton said on commentary. Joe Root and Prasidh Krishna interaction #ENGvsIND — ascii13 (@zeracast) August 1, 2025 Former Indian cricket team head coach Ravi Shastri also pointed out that Root has made his intentions clear with the aggressive approach. 'Both teams fired up. What it would really do is send a clear message to India that there would be a clear intent from Joe Root. He will be looking to score and looking to be more positive,' said Shastri. 'There is a sense of purpose, even when he walked back to his guard. You can see that in his eyes." Meanwhile, Gus Atkinson secured his fourth five-wicket haul at his home ground, The Oval, during the fifth and final Test against India, securing the second-best bowling figures by a pacer at the venue. Atkinson continued his fine run in white clothing at The Oval, taking 5/33 in 21.4 overs, at an economy rate of 1.52. His wicket tally included Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Mohammed Siraj and, Prasidh Krishna. The first best bowling figures by a pacer against India at this venue are by Gubby Allen, when he secured 7/80 back in 1936.

Did Gautam Gambhir cold-shoulder Oval pitch curator in second meet? Video goes viral

Indian men's head coach Gautam Gambhir seemed to have given Kennington Oval curator Lee Fortis a cold shoulder - at least that's evident from the latest video going viral on social media before the fifth and final Test, starting Thursday, July came to Gambhir, who seemed to have turned his back towards him as the curator kept interacting with Shubman Gill, the Indian Test captain. Blow-by-blow account of Gambhir vs Curator spat

The five-Test series between India and England has reached its climax, but controversy continues to shadow the contest. After the initial row over renaming the Pataudi Trophy to the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy and a debatable end to the fourth Test in Manchester, tensions have now spilled into preparations for the final match at The Oval. Just two days before the decisive Test begins on July 31, India head coach Gautam Gambhir was involved in a heated altercation with Surrey's head groundsman Lee Fortis. The incident occurred during a routine pitch inspection on July 29, escalating into a public disagreement over ground protocols and behaviour. Flashpoint at The Oval: What triggered the face-off The confrontation began when Gambhir, accompanied by assistant coach Sitanshu Kotak, walked to the centre square at The Oval for a standard pre-match pitch assessment. Fortis, through a messenger, reportedly asked the Indian staff to remain 2.5 metres away from the pitch and objected to a cooler being brought onto the field. This triggered a reaction from Gambhir, who was caught on camera angrily responding to Fortis's instructions. In the viral clip, Gambhir can be heard saying, 'You don't tell us what we need to do… You are just a groundsman. Nothing beyond that.' ???? 'It felt awkward. This is a Test match starting the day after tomorrow. We were simply observing the wicket with rubber soles,' Kotak said. He noted that Fortis's concerns may have stemmed from a desire to preserve the pitch, but added, 'You can be protective, but at the end of the day, it is a cricket pitch, not an antique.' Fortis, seated on a roller, reportedly shouted at the Indian contingent, instructing them not to place the 10-kg cooler on the field. Kotak attempted to mediate, but Gambhir interrupted the conversation, challenging Fortis's authority. Fortis warned Gambhir against using profanity and threatened to report him to the match referee. Gambhir responded defiantly, urging Kotak not to engage further and questioning the curator's right to instruct international coaching staff. 'You have no right to tell us what to do. You are just a groundsman,' Gambhir was heard saying, reiterating his objection several times during the exchange. VIDEO | Indian team's head coach Gautam Gambhir was seen having verbal spat with chief curator Lee Fortis at The Oval Cricket Ground in London ahead of the last Test match of the series starting Thursday. After having drawn the fourth Test at Old Trafford, India have a chance… — Press Trust of India (@PTI_News) July 29, 2025 Assistant coach offers perspective on heated exchange Speaking to reporters, Kotak emphasised that the team was mindful of preserving the ground's integrity. 'We were using rubber spikes. Tomorrow, batters will be sliding, bowlers will dive—so what difference does it make? If he's worried about grass growing overnight, that seems unrealistic. We respect the ground, but there's a limit to how possessive one can be,' he said. What might have been the groundsman's concern? The Oval still has several matches scheduled through early September, and Fortis is likely trying to protect the main square from overuse. However, the Indian camp felt that the demand to avoid the area around the three allotted practice pitches was unreasonable, especially given the proximity of the final Test. With the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at stake, England lead the series 2–1. The final Test at The Oval begins on July 31, with emotions already running high after the latest controversy.

England's Hypocrisy Exposed After Gambhir-Curator Clash: 'Different Rules For..'

Last Updated: Aakash Chopra criticised England's hypocrisy, noting a dispute between The Oval's curator Lee Fortis and India's coach Gautam Gambhir over pitch access. Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra laid bare England's hypocrisy with a pointed attack on social media. The cricketer-turned-commentator on Tuesday weighed in on the controversial altercation between The Oval's chief curator, Lee Fortis and the Indian men's cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir. Aakash Chopra also pointed out that the same groundman was seen standing on the pitch with the England head coach Brendon McCullum, ahead of an Ashes Test in 2023. #Aakashvani #ENGvsIND — Aakash Chopra (@cricketaakash) July 29, 2025 What Is The Gambhir-Curator Controversy? India head coach Gautam Gambhir was involved in a heated exchange with The Oval's chief curator, Lee Fortis. Gambhir was heard saying, 'You don't tell us what we need to do," while pointing fingers at the groundstaff. The Oval is set to host the fifth and final Test between India and England starting Thursday, following India's remarkable comeback to draw the fourth match in Manchester. India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak explained that the altercation occurred after the visitors were asked to stand '2.5 metres from the wicket." Despite the incident, Kotak confirmed that the Indian team would not be filing any complaint. 'Honestly, one of the ground staff came and said (that we were required to) stand 2.5 metres from the wicket and 'go outside the rope and see the wicket'. I have never seen something like that," Kotak stated to the media later. He added, 'No complaint is needed for this." Kotak mentioned that the Indian squad members were not wearing spikes, eliminating any risk to the surface. 'Before this game, we had an idea that the curator is not the easiest person to work with. Being possessive is good but no so much. We had joggers on (and) not spikes so there was no danger," he said. During the training session, videos that have gone viral on social media show Gambhir in a verbal altercation with the curator, prompting Kotak to intervene and calm the situation. The dispute began when Fortis told Gambhir, 'I will have to report this," and to that the Indian head coach replied rather tersely: 'You go and report whatever you want to report." Kotak then stepped in, took Fortis aside, and assured him, 'We won't damage anything." Other Indian support staff, including bowling coach Morne Morkel and assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate, were seen listening keenly to the argument. Although the reason for the argument was unclear, Gambhir and Fortis appeared to be disputing the conditions of the practice pitches. Gambhir insisted that Fortis should not be telling his team 'what to do." 'You can't tell us what to do. You are just one of the groundsmen, nothing beyond," Gambhir was seen saying in the video. Fortis and Gambhir then went their separate ways, with Gambhir returning to oversee the net session. As he walked from the field to his room, Fortis remarked, 'It's a big game, and he (Gambhir) is a bit touchy."
