Hidden Jahmai Simpson-Pusey Celtic transfer 'clause' raises eyebrows as Sweden international scouted by Hoops

Brendan Rodgers is set to bolster his defence with the signing of Man City prodigy Simpson-Pusey Jahmai Simpson-Pusey will travel to Glasgow on Friday for a medical as the Manchester City starlet closes in on a season-long loan deal with Celtic. ‌ The 19-year-old stopper has agreed a switch to Parkhead after Brendan Rodgers fought off competition from other European clubs. ‌ Simpson-Pusey will compete with Auston Trusty, Liam Scales and Dane Murray for a start alongside first-choice Cameron Carter-Vickers. ‌ The England youth international has been tipped as the future of City's defence by Pep Guardiola after making six appearances last term - including a Champions League debut away to Sporting CP. Ex-Celtic star Charlie Mulgrew reckons the youngster - who was crowned EPL 2 Player of the Year - could quickly become a regular starter. He told Go Radio: "For me, it doesn't feel like Brendan Rodgers is completely satisfied with Trusty or Scales. He's tried to bring in Trusty when Scales was playing. Scales then gets back in. "So it indicates that he's not too sure and needs someone else to get back in alongside Carter-Vickers. "By the way, injuries look like they are catching up a wee bit on him. So they need another one in and Simpson-Pusey looks like the man. Man City will probably put some sort of clause that he'll need to play games or it will cost Celtic money. "It's interesting to put that on a 19-year-old. But you've got to trust Brendan Rodgers. You don't play for Man City if you are a bad player. He's young and bound to make a few mistakes. I'll be interested to see him." ‌ Simpson-Pusey's arrival could see Stephen Welsh leave the club either on loan or a permanent basis. The Hoops academy graduate has fallen out of favour under Rodgers and recently spent time on loan with Belgian side Mechelen. ‌ Mulgrew reckons a parting of ways is best for both parties as he said: "He's 25 years old. He's got to go. He's never going to be a regular at Celtic. Brendan Rodgers has shown that he's never going to start there. "He's been a decent enough servant. He's come in at times when they've struggled in that position and done ok. He's not a huge presence at the back. "The young lad's come through the system and done ok and he showed a good attitude. He was on loan last year and did ok. He looks like he's going to move on and it's best for all parties." ‌ Meanwhile Celtic scouts are reportedly watching Sweden international Viktor Eriksson in action for Hammarby. Valued at £2million, Eriksson joined Hammarby last season after a short stint in the MLS with Minnesota United. The 24-year-old made his international debut earlier this year and the Scottish Sun reports that Hoops talent spotter Paul Tisdale will run the rule over him in Thursday night's Conference League qualifier with Belgian side Charleroi.

The 19-year-old centre-back stepped into the City defence last season due to injury problems, making six first-team appearances including two in the Champions League - and earned praise from head coach Pep Guardiola. It's not easy for him. 'Normally the young lads, they must come in with support from the team, with Rodri in front of them, right? With the best Kyle [Walker], and defenders, and now we support him. 'Now he's playing in a position that is difficult for him, but he performed unbelievably. We have a central defender to help us for the future, for the next years. I'm really pleased. Always there is good news when the situation goes bad, and this is one of them.' He made 19 appearances for Spurs last term - including 10 games in the EPL - and was an unused substitute as Ange Postecoglou's side beat Man Utd 1-0 in the Europa League final. There has been plenty interest in the England Under-19 international - with Championship sides Birmingham and West Brom also linked - but the Daily Telegraph state that Rangers have 'emerged as favourites' to sign Moore on loan. Every time we were on the ball I was willing the boys to pass it to him as well, because he's got that ability to go past people, which is the hardest thing to do in our game, apart from scoring goals. If he's not successful, it doesn't faze him, he'll just go again.

Simpson-Pusey was also crowned EPL 2 Player of the Year after captaining Man City's reserves to title glory, seeing off competition from Hoops new Bhoy Callum Osmand at Fulham. The youngster actually faced Celtic during City's pre-season tour of the USA in 2024, as Brendan Rodgers' side edged out 4-3 winners. He was then called upon by Guardiola throughout the campaign as the dethroned Premier League champions suffered an injury crisis. And the breakthrough talent seriously impressed his manager, with Guardiola hailing him as one for the future after his display in a 2-1 defeat at Brighton. All-conquering Guardiola said: 'The guy played really good, the young lad again, with this composure and duels and everything was good. It's not easy for him. ‌ 'Normally the young lads, they must come in with support from the team, with Rodri in front of them, right? Guardiola revealed in December that he was tempted to throw in the rising star in the heat of a Manchester derby. He added: 'For example against (Manchester) United I thought to put Jahmai (Simpson-Pusey); he's played really good, but that pressure in that situation, it's a little bit…' Having offloaded Gustaf Lagerbielke and Maik Nawrocki, Celtic are in the market for more defensive cover. ‌ At least one winger, midfielder and main striker are also on Rodgers' wishlist as the champions kick off their title defence this weekend.
