Berhampur: Family members of an 82-year-old trader in Berhampur donated his body and eyes to the govt-run MKCG Medical College and Hospital following his death due to age-related ailments, early on Friday.
The body of E Bala Krishna was handed over to the medical college authorities by E Sruti and E Srinivash, his daughter and son-in-law, in the presence of his relatives and campaigners of
organ donation
.
The deceased was a member of Humanist Rationalist Organization (HRO), Berhampur, which campaigns for organ donations. "Krishna had also pledged to donate his body for research purposes to the medical college," said J Suresh, one of the campaigners.
"As per his wish, we decided to donate his eyes and body to the medical college. Amid the grief, we felt proud as my father's body will be utilised for medical studies," said Sruti.
The body will help medical students in their studies, said Sagar Prusty, professor, anatomy. "The body would be embalmed to prevent it from decomposition," he said. This was the third body donation in the medical college in the last 15 days, and the seventh since Jan this year, said Prusty.
