Designing tomorrow's mobility industry today: Will AI/ML be in the driver's seat?

A quiet but radical shift is underway in India's mobility landscape. In boardrooms, testing labs, startup accelerators, and even public transport offices, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are no longer buzzwords, they are the silent drivers of transformation. At a recent CXO panel discussion at ETAutoTech Summit in Bengaluru, industry leaders came together to explore a pressing question - Will AI/ML be in the driver's seat of tomorrow's mobility? The Digital Momentum Dr. Tapan Sahoo, Head – Digital Enterprise (DE) and Information & Cybersecurity, Maruti Suzuki India (MSIL) reflects on how dramatically the automotive industry has changed in the past two to three years. The pandemic has accelerated digital transformation, reshaping consumer journeys and multiplying digital touchpoints. 'Everything has gone digital,' he says, adding that MSIL has responded by opening its doors to innovation, particularly from startups. He highlights on MSIL's structured program that supports startups from the incubation stage to live pilots. 'India added over 2,000 deep-tech startups just last year. The challenge is not innovation, but creating a playground where these ideas can be tested at scale.' But scaling innovation in automotive is not easy, he cautions. 'We need serious investment in R&D, in Tier 1, 2, and 3 capabilities. What we are seeing in Japan, Germany, or China is the outcome of decades of investment. We need to decide where we want to win - and software, deep tech, and startups are where our edge lies.' The Shift to Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs) Mahesh Babu, CEO, Switch Mobility paints a vivid picture of how software is reshaping product development. 'Vehicle architecture today is not just about hardware. We spend an equal amount of time defining the software architecture up front because it drives so much of the functionality and adaptability.' In India's complex and ever-evolving regulatory environment, software-driven adaptability is not optional, it is critical. Babu cites the example of a bus that uses route-specific algorithms. 'A bus running on one route in a city might need entirely different software from the same bus running a few kilometres away,' he exclaims. This is where digital twinning comes in - simulating real-world performance to fine-tune AI-powered systems. He sees enormous potential in the convergence of India's IT prowess and automotive ambitions, but it requires a change in mindset. 'We have the market, the challenges, and the people. If we cannot build AI and ML solutions here, then where can we? This is our opportunity to lead globally.' Collaboration, Not Competition Ujjwala Karale, Senior Deputy Director, ARAI brings the conversation back to the importance of ecosystem collaboration. 'Everyone has a role to play - OEMs, startups, government, suppliers - and nobody can win alone.' She speaks about ARAI's new Digital Twin Lab and the work being done under development of indigenous advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) and solutions. However, she points that collaboration only works if data becomes shared knowledge. 'Each of us can interpret the same data differently. That is our differentiator, but only if the data is available and roles are well defined.' From Assistants to Coworkers: The Rise of GenAI Dr. Caleb Munigety, Head, Enterprise – AI, Bosch India, says, 'AI started narrow, but now it's evolving into broader, more reasoning-capable systems. GenAI won't replace us, it will sit beside us, solving design and engineering problems in real time.' He emphasizes that real transformation will come from the bottom up. 'We must develop AI that is homegrown and context-aware. Algorithms imported from countries such as Europe or the U.S. won't work for Indian constraints, like our complex supply chains or infrastructure realities. Tier 2 and 3 suppliers need to invest in algorithmic innovation. That is where our future lies.' AI Across the Value Chain Sanjeev Kulkarni, CEO, BillionE, shares that focus on AI's role in operations and risk management is critical. From route planning to predictive maintenance, he says, 'AI can dramatically increase efficiency, particularly in energy use and fleet reliability.' Vinod Palakkil, Senior Director and Head Indirect Business, PTC, adds that today's vehicles are software-defined and highly coded systems, a dramatic shift from just a few years ago when the focus was solely on mechanical design. 'AI now drives every function - from design to sales, from simulation to diagnostics,' he says, urging policymakers to incentivise skilling programs to build a ready workforce. Gautham Hedge, Technical Director, Ultraviolette, echoes the sentiment, adding that AI is fast-tracking development across supplier quality, inspections, marketing, and more. 'The goal is seamless integration across functions, and AI is the glue.' India stands on the cusp of a mobility revolution powered by intelligence - both artificial and human. The challenge isn't whether AI/ML should drive the future. The question is - Are we ready to take the passenger seat and co-navigate this journey together?
